The new HSFs are getting larger and heavier. I was wondering if the huge increase in weight is causing the HSF to detach from the mount at a minute level which might impact its effectiveness.

Test 1 Vertical Mobo and Case, HSF Sideways
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Computer sitting as usual, motherboard is vertical and the HSF is horizonal.
What are the Idle and Load temps?

Test 2 Horizontal Mobo and Case, HSF Upright
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Computer is lying on the side. The motherboard is horizontal and the HSF is upright with its full weight over the mount.
What are the Idle and Load temps?

Tests are done with the computer in the same general area.
I would like some data on this. Please post if you have done the tests. Please provide information as to the type of HSF, fan speed, case, number of case fans, etc...

I'm thinking of getting the scythe infinity, but with the great weight, I was wondering if tying strings to support its weight might help? If test 1 and test 2 yield the same results, then I won't need to use the strings, but might still add them just to prevent damage when the case is moved around.

Well it depends

With my Zalman, idle/load temps were about 2c cooler when the case was placed horizontal...when the case was upright, the cooler was noticeably angled downwards, and temperatures were slightly worse

With my Big Typhoon, the heatsink also angled downward, but there was no difference in temperature with the case flat down and upright. I think it may have to do with the BT's heatpipes...

Never had a problem with the gravities. it should help though.

me applying more pressure on my heatsink fucked the spread of the AS5... i need to reapply... my temps went up 8 degrees 0_0

Modern heatpipe designs are supposedly not affected by gravity although I suspect it still plays a minimal role. My SI-128 is surprisingly light considering it's size so I'm not really worried about it separating from the retention bracket....I do worry that the clip Thermalright used allows the sink to rotate slightly on the socket but it doesn't seem to affect performance.
