I am looking for the most rugged, heavy duty external hard drive. I bring it back and forth to work every day, so I need something that is going to stand up.

I'm looking for something at least 320 GB, but 500 GB preferred. I also want something that is USB powered only, so I don't have to lug around a power adapter.

I have a Seagate Expansion drive as seen here, but it isn't going to last. I can already hear something broken off inside it and moving around.

Thanks!

Mechanical hard drives are prone to bumps and drops. It's just how they're made. If you want something more durable, get an SSD. No enclosure can realistically protect a hard drive adequately. The platters/head are too sensitive.

Get one of the original boxes that hard drives are shipped in. Use that to transport drives.

My hard drives are in external cases. The cases are placed in a cardboard box suspended by soft foam end supports. They travel in cars 20 hours a week every other week. No damage so far.
