I recently decided to join the rest of the "new technology" world and build a new computer. I slapped one together for about $350:

e7400
4gb ddr2 800
biostar g31-m7 te
Hiper 580W PS
x1300 Pro graphics card

go it all from microcenter on sale. Then along came the q8200. had to buy that for $99 because i wanted a quad in the first place and i just bought the e7400 because it was cheap and fast.

Once i installed the q8200 i was getting temps of 70-71 on 3 of the cores using the stock hsf (running boinc and folding). I looked around and those temps looked too hot. So I went and bought a xigmatek s983. That brought the temps to 50-61 (depending which core). I am also having some issues with pc locking up randomly.

I am wondering if this is from the temps or something else maybe.

I got the smaller xigmatek because of space issues in the case. Idle temps are 39-49C. Off topic I don't understand why anyone would have come up with these push pins, they scare me very much and although i am using them i am not happy. :(

50C-61C load is with the acceptable range for the Q8200, I suppose.
However, you may have not seated the heatsink correctly, causing higher temps.
Have you considered replacing the thermal paste? It should reduce temps a bit further.
Here are some good choices:

Any of these would be fine.

Hiper 580W PS
Which Hiper 580W PSU did you buy?

Also you haven't told us what case you're using and what your ambient temps are. In addition we need to know how the airflow inside your case is laid out.

My computer crashed and I had to reinstall windows, probably hard drive problem.

The side of the case is open and there are 2 fans blowing through the heatsink (the heatsink that comes with it and a 120mm that i put adjacent to the 92mm). Ambient temp is 19-22C in my house at any given time.

I will try and remove and reapply paste, I have some as5 laying around. We'll see if that changes anything.

My PSU is HPU-4K580-MS V3

Does anyone else have this heatsink on a quad?

AS5 got me -2C. Now its about 50-58C. We'll see if it changes when it sets. All the push pins snapped in, just like last time. The old paste was uniform.

WOW. I have the q8200 with the xigmatek but the HDT-S963 120mm version. Just barely fit my case. my CPU even overclocked to 2.8ghz is running at 24C!! room around 70-75F or 20-25C.

to put in perspective. my pentium D was running 64-65C IDLE.
