I stopped folding a while ago because of heat issues. I just recently cleaned out my PC and got a new power supply. What is a safe temp and what can I do to keep the temp down without buying anything? I want to start folding again.

You could run at a lower percentage. That would keep the temps down.

What kind of system is this? Somebody may have a heatsink they could send you. ;)

Is it just your CPU temp that you are worried about.. or is it the room temp...

if its just cpu.. there is always watercooling ^_^

i think u guys missed the point.... he doesn't want to spend any more money

well if u have a good heatsink and good airflow in the case u shold be able to pump it at 100% at all times

what kind of cpu do you have? that way we can better awns the ?

Without spending money (buying anything) anything there are 3 things you can do:

1. Clean up any wiring mess in order to increase air flow.
2. Open the side to cool down the inside.
3. Run at a lower percentage.

Well... was jk about watercooling...

just trying to see which is the problem for heat...

if the cpu is fine and the room isnt... well....

but if its the cpu.. then you can cut blow holes on the top... etc etc
wires.. the usual

If it's an AMD, I consider anything above 60C too hot. That is using the on-die diode and not the thermistor in the CPU socket. Otherwise I would make sure it doesn't get above 50-55C since it usually under-reports. I prefer to keep my systems under 50C although I will let it go higher as long as it's not at that temp long term.

By "cleaned out you're PC", I assume that included removing the HSF and cleaning the heat sink well. If you have a lot of ribbon cables, you can mod them to round cables. Costs ya a little tape to improve airflow. My lappy only folds at 75% CPU usage, because it gets a tad warm, and well, it's a lappy. Any contribution to the cause is appreciated.

Mine has been running at 60-65C for 3 years with no problems (AXP2200)

I know you said you don't want to spend any money....but if you are willing to spend about $40 you can get THIS from the egg and might help your temp issues

If we get a better description of the problem (high cast temps, high CPU temps, no airflow, high ROOM temps, etc) we might be able to offer a solution or two AND if you require fans a few of us may have a few fans to give you.

Easiest thing to do without doing anything...

Run the service version at 50% or 60%.

whats killing me are the temps in my room... my window AC died and i dont have the funds available atm to replace it... so my room hovers around 80 ~ 85F

or you can see it live! :p

http://weather.flecom.net/live.html (indoor temp is my room)

Now if you just add all your cpu core temps to it... and case temps... and real time pictures... oh.. dont forget to add all the WU % complete... and points... and time left.. and.. and...

That tears it... time to start a "FLECOM needs a damned AC unit before he melts and all his borgs explode" Fund. Where should I send my $5?

Your record high is 115.5F and it was in Feb? Is there something reflecting on it?

ya that was when the radiation shield fell off.. but it was a VERY hot day...

I have a weather guy (Meterologist, sp?) I work with. He liked it.

that is so cool

i want one

glad to see another ham on the forums flecom :)

Pretty cool FLECOM. My fiance works near MIA intl. and she lives in Pemboke Pines and my parents live in Ft Laud. I'm usually down there every month or two. I grew up there so, yeah, temps will be an issue. Maybe the phase change guys over in the extreme cooling forum could help you get the A/C fixed.

I have an Athlon XP 2500+ with stock HSF and an Antec case. There is one front intake fan, one back exaust fan, and a powersupply with an 120 mm fan. What is a safe temp that will not shorten the life of my processor?

Processor isn't the only thing to worry about since the heat in the case can effect everything else.
I cap my CPU at 55C.

Did you install the HSF yourself? If so did you use ArticSilver or similar paste?
Sometimes that helps as well, and I am sure someone here has some extra they
can send..

I have a pile of 80mm fans I can send you.

hell, if you can keep the inside of the case as close as you can to your ambient, it should help alot.

Have you tried to make a shroud or duct to help ? maybe take off the side of the case ?

i run my case sideless (well, missing the side on the left anyways) because i don't have a sidepanel. as far as i can tell, it just makes my computer noisier. i may try putting it on my desk up against the wall to see if it helps.

taking the side off messes up the air paths the case is (hopefully) designed to have. it usually does help CPU temp though.

you may as well try it and see if it helps any.

flecom: that weather thing is cool. though i don't even want to know how hot my room gets at night during the summers here... i'm guessing >90F. but i'm not really sure. i'll have to check.

The standby for good cooling with an open side panel is to take a standard room fan (you know one of the oscillating types and position it in front of the open case. Your case will be at ambient temps.

People with children and cats do not try this.

As you can see I cannot run sideless. That is Lucky guarding part of the Farm
:p

I have to make all my cases Hair/dust-proof. Basicly I clossed off all intake holes into the cases that dont have a filter with tape. The areas that I could not close off , I used those fabric softener sheets after I ran a load of clothes in the dryer ( they must be used sheets ) as filters.

I then upgraded all my HSFs to copper and Artic silver. You wouldnt beleve the difference copper make for case temps. I use HSFs that are made for faster CPUs . So on my AMD xp-2800 I used a HSF combo made for a AMD xp-3200 just so It will run cooler.

Even with all my my Boxes having minimal air flow, the copper keeps everything nice and cool. Try copper HSFs you can get them cheap from newegg, hell even compusa have them for cheap.

I hate to admit it, but I have 2 cats and I have 2 boxes (3200+ and a 2100+) running totally naked on a wall shelf (you know, the shelf that runs around finished basement walls). I've seen one of the cats walking all over the 2 boxes a few times and they run fine.

I'm a bad, bad boy. Especially since I have a great Antec case that I've been too lazy to put one of the computers in.

Also, in the past 5 days, I've basically bought a 3400+, DFI Ultra Nforce3, with good memory, in other words a whole box (all seperate purchases with no intent of putting them together). I think I need to put the CC in the freezer.

To explain: I bought the memory because there was a great deal on the Hot Deals thread for twinMOS 512mb sticks which overclock well if you can provide them enough voltage. Then I bought a 3400+ S754 because I was tired of waiting for dual cores, Venice, etc.... Then someone was selling a DFI mobo and I haven't been perfectly satisfied with my MSI board, and since I bought the 3400+ I have a 3000+ Semporn sitting around, so might as well get that board, except he already had other takers, so I bought the board on Chiefvalue for $99.

Anyways. Week total:
3 Skyhawk (name) Aluminum Cases $38 each = $114
3 new fans for Socket A (some of mine are ghetto) $18 each = $56
2 twinMOS 512MB memory sticks $56 each = $112
3400+ AMD Athlon 64 $212 ea = $212
DFI Utra Lan Party NForce 3 blah blah blah $99 ea = $99

Total Spending spree = $593

Whoops

im upgrading my network at home ;)

FLECOM, since it appears you have a few *ahem* switch ports, you mind if I borrow a few?

well, there are 256 ports in that picture... im sure i can spare some ;)

3 words: Ho Lee Crap.

What is all that going to be used for? Someone setting up a farm? :D

Nice Flecom.

As for the cooling issue.........PUT IT IN THE FREEZER ;)

I live in a 144 year old house, and dust plays havoc with CPU temps. All intake ports in my systems, have chopped up pantyhose covering them. They get dirty really fast. thank goodness for canned air. Need a line dryer for my ghetto rigged compressor, to prevent moisture from blowing into rigs.

Leaving both sides off the case, and using a fan or window AC to blow through, substantially reduces CPU temps  .
