Currently looking for a couple of headsets for under $50 each. I am looking at the Creative Fatal1ty and the Turtle Beach Z2. Any recommendations or other suggestions would be appreciated.

I have a creative fatal1ty and it's pretty good for the price. I think I saw a corsair vengeance 1300 somewhere on sale for $49.99 the other day. if you can find that in that price range that's an awesome choice as well.

Samson SR850 and get a cheap mic. Newegg has them for $49 shipped. They sound about as good as you could ever imagine anything could for $50. Certainly dominate any cheap ass gaming headset.

You must trust me in this, it will make you happier.

Can I get an amen?

Yes. For gaming and a bit o' skype. I can get the Creatives for $35 shipped. Not really looking at anything too expensive as one will be going to a dorm room so if it gets stolen or broken, its not a big deal.

Oddly enough I'm a big Samson fan (I have 2 Servo amps) but I'm really wanting an all-in-one solution here.

I'm on my 2nd pair of Creative Fatal1ty's (Accident severed the cord on the first one) and the sound from them is phenomenal! The bass is rich and deep, and the treble is crisp and clear... my only point of contention with them is the fact it takes a long while to break them in comfort-wise... my ears hurt a little from wearing them over a couple of hours

Aha dorm room. Yeah i understand. The creative for $35 will do the trick.

JVC RX700 are $20-ish cheaper, sound stage isn't as great but they're fun gaming headphones if you're not super competitive. Leaves him room in the budget for an Antlion Modmic, yeah it's overpriced at $30 but it's the perfect boon mic add-on. Still looking at $60 total and it'll sound better than the vast majority of headsets in question.

Thing is, that way you usually just end up paying more for less...

I found the Samsons for 32.50 + shipping each (in lots of 2) so I think I'll go for those and the Modmic. Its a little more than I wanted to spend at around $65 a piece but should last longer and if the headphone breaks they get to keep the mic and vice-versa. Unfortunately, AntLion are updating their store atm so I'll have to wait a couple more weeks. I'll update this thread with pics and a review when I have them altogether. Thanks to all for the suggestions and Amen! to spaceman.

Amazon sells the Modmic, goes out of stock all the time but as of this writing they have 10, it's $32 with free shipping IIRC.

Unfortunately, since I live in Canada its direct from AntLion or nothing as Amazon.com will not ship them internationally and Amazon.ca does not stock them. Thanks for trying, however.

You can get the mostly positive reviewed Steelseries Siberia v2's for under 45 ( I've seen lowest at 40$ shipped) on ebay . That's if you don't mind buying from China.

Thanks for the suggestion. I looked at the dealers on eBay and they all have a short history. I'm wondering if these units are factory seconds. Shipping a headset back to China if it has a fault could cost the same as the headset. I'll have to think on this one.

Headphones came. They are on a different level from sub $50 gaming headsets. Lightweight, super comfortable and fantastic sound. The mics arrive next week so I'll post back then and maybe throw in a pic or two. Pleased so far.

zeekerton is right for 45 buck for the siberia v2 you just cant beat them for the price!!

Yes, you can. You buy real headphones and a separate mic as was mentioned in this thread several times and is what the OP already did.

Thanks. I already decided to go for a separate mic and headphone solution for not much more.

Yep.

Yeah they are. Light as can be. Check out the sock mod for more comfort.

LOL! That's a great idea. Cozy in the winter too! Compared to the other gaming headsets I've looked at, however, these are just on a whole different planet of comfort. Thanks again for the suggestion.

Miodmics came and attached. Everything works perfectly and looks professional. Highly recommended combination.

I know you already made your purchase, but for other users I'd like to recommend the following:

Plantronics GameCom 380 sounds quite good for the price. Very similar sound to Sony MDR-V6 headphones in signature, but a little more muted/neutral. The microphone suffers from typical condenser mic issues (you can hear dogs barking outside in the neighborhood), so this headset is only really viable for a Push to Talk configuration.

AKG GHS 1 is another good headset, which can be had for $50 (or just barely over for the white or camo versions.) It also suffers from a super sensitive microphone, but the audio quality is really quite stellar. It sounds like a pair of AKG K81DJ headphones and compliments games really well.

I'd imagine the ModMic is also sensitive, so this is a non-issue for the majority of people. Both headsets are leagues better than SteelSeries Siberia V2, or even Corsair Vengeance 1300 (without a lot of equalization) in audio reproduction.

Actually, the Modmics are not terribly sensitive. I have to put the boost up considerably to get enough signal. Once boosted its crystal clear, however. I had some cheap headsets in the past that were very sensitive and others that were not. Signal quality was also all over the shop. Hopefully, the Modmic will last a bit longer than the cheap headsets.

Not to bring a thread back from the dead, but I wanted to share with everyone that I am considering the Plantronics GameCom 780. It's about $50 on Amazon. Farkle actually made a good suggestion with the 380, but I am opting for the 780 since it has Dolby Surround support. Hundreds of very positive reviews on Amazon.

I'll probably order it soon and will report back on the audio and mic quality.

'Dolby Surround' isn't really considered useful- it's a tool that distorts audio. Remember that you only have two ears!
