Headset microphone - plug wiring

Greetings,

The microphone on my headset seems to have died. Having kept the headset safely on my desk, I've come to the conclusion that the problem must exist in the plug.
I've attempted to replace the 3.5mm stereo plug on my computer headset, but having never done a microphone plug replacement before, I'm at a road-block here.
I'm assuming my microphone is mono, (I don't see two individual wires in the shorter wire bunch labeled blue below!), so I'm dealing with 2 individual wires here...the ground and the one that goes to the tip.
The replacement stereo plug is built for a stereo wire (Left ear/right ear). I'm not terribly sure where to go from here.

I've tried both combo A and combo B, but I got no signal from the mic.

Please take a look at these pictures to get a better idea of where I'm at.

correct me if I'm wrong but I have red as the ground and blue as my wire that goes to the tip

I'm no electrical expert, but I do want to throw out the possibility that the problem lies within the headphones themselves, where the cord meets the can. That is more likely to fail than the plug, and likely more difficult to fix too. That neither of your attempts worked leads me to think it might be on the other end of the cord.

Fail point could very likely be within that in-line volume control pod too, IIRC it has a mute button so the mic isn't straight wired thru there... I've still got a pair of those PC150's laying around and they work fine, but I think I remember people saying the cord was most fragile around/within the in line volume control (which is very common really).
