headphones recommendation?

looking for headphones for my phone and computer,

i really only listen to hip hop/rap.

i was currently looking at two options:

Audio Technica ATH-AD700 or the AD900,

but im not really sure what to look for in headphones for music.

and would a portable amplifier like the "FIIO E7" be useful? would i notice a difference with and without one?

don't go AT for that kind of music. Try Beyerdynamic DT770s - NOT the 880s or 990s - both better, more accurate sets, but the DT770s are bass cannons that should work very well for hip hop. I have DT990s myself (we listen to very different music) and they are absolutely great and the only comparably comfortable headphones I've worn are some Sennheisers.

If you have a Guitar Center near you, then go there and try some out.

I really can't make a recommendation for headphones based on that genre of music. Not my cup o' tea. But I can strongly, highly recommend Fiio E7 HIGHLY! I was given one for Christmas, and the difference it makes is just incredible. It drives more base, and clear power to a good audio range. I use it with my Sennheiser HD595 and Audio Technica ATH-M50. As far as those two headphones go, as I said, I don't listen to your type music, but for classical, alt rock, and bluegrass (my eclectic taste) they are both great options. I really enjoy having the HD595s, but there is a distinct downside for having open cans, so I am now gravitating towards using the AT's more simply because the better noise isolation.

Dt 770's are probably the best headphones for the rap genre, Tons of bass whilst retaining all the other sounds too, And you will need a headphone amp and that fiio is pretty good.

Also if you are on a budget and want a lot of bass try the sony XB500's. XB stands for Xtra Bass or some shit.

Go for the AD900x with tenso.com to save about $100, they are new and have bass.

Otherwise, the AD700 and AD900 are not good for your likes.

The Fiio E17 is better than the E7.

Hmm, for rap a closed can like the Beyer 770.

The AudioTechnica ATH-M50's are also very very good for bass, and very good headphones for their price ($100-150)

I think you're better off with a FiiOE17. The E7 is ooooooooooooold, and the E17 is much better all around.

As for the headphones, you might want to go for closed headphones. The M50s are alright, but they're not very comfortable. So I second the DT770. And maybe check out the Beyerdynamic Custom One Pro.

"We at headphones.com also really enjoy the Beyerdynamic DT880! It happens to be one of our most popular sellers. We find that it suits a variety of tastes. When paired with a good headphone amp such as the Beyerdynamic A1 Headphone Amp, it becomes apparent that the 600 ohm version of this headphone presents some obvious benefits in clarity. Some of our customers enjoy the 250 ohm version most for the fact that it is not as dependent on a headphone amplifier. It’s worth mentioning how darn comfy these headphones are!!! What we do notice specifically about the DT880 is that the soundstage on these puppies is amongst the best at its price point. I find the sound envelops the head in a way that compliments both popular music genres (such as rock, pop, electronic, reggae& RAP)as well as classical and jazz. The imaging and soundstage abilities of this headphone are wide and defined without sounding exaggerated with genres that prefer intimacy. This aspect, for me is one of the most distinctive qualities of this wonderful headphone!" - David Mahler

yeah, while they can be good in general closed cans are better for that type of music.

I own the AudioTechnia ATH-M50 headphones mentioned several times so far

these are awesome headphones and would do well with rap music.... I love mine

and for xmas i got a FiiO E07K 24/96 usb dac (i've been using mine mainly docked w/ my E9 anyways it is much cheaper then the E17 (the E07K is about $90~ on amazon) and my experinece with it so far has been quite excellent indeed.

if you didn't need a mobile dac the new Schiit Modi (dac) /Magni (headphone amp) $100~ ea have been getting pretty positive reviews and these units are made here in the USA.

He's talking about the soundstage and how engaging the sound is, not the specific genres it does well. The 880 is just not built for rap, sorry. Certainly not in the same breath as the DT 770 or even the 990 with it's massive V-shaped EQ. I've owned the DT 880s and still own a pair of Beyers modified from DT 770s, Darth Beyers, and of any headphone I've owned the DT 880s are near last on the list of headphones that get brought to mind when I think of rap or hip hop.

If I was buying headphones for rap/hip hop/electronica then no question it would be between the DT 770 and Ultrasone Pro 900 with a definite hard think on the Ultrasone HFi 780.

I would look into Denon D2000s over the DT770s-they are far more balanced and still deliver some of the cleanest, most authoritative bass you can find in a sub $500 headphone. They're also easier to drive than than the 770s.

Denon has discontinued the D2Ks, but you can still find used pairs for under $200 quite easily. You'd be hard pressed to find a better headphone for hip hop (or any genre, really) in this price range.

Sony MDR-XB700 or XB1000
Audio-Technica ATH-Pro700MK2
Denon AH-D1100
Beyerdynamic DT770

All of these headphones can induce nausea from bass response. Audio-Technica AD900x as suggested doesn't really have bass with authority, though it does have a tight and accurate control of that frequency range. Sony MDR-XB700 is going to have the most boom, but the XB1000 is a little more balanced to it's counterpart, so over-all a better listen with not much loss in the low frequency range. The ATH-Pro700MK2 will go lower than any of them with equalization, including the DT770. And finally, the Denon AH-D1100 has quite a bit of authority itself (with equalization, about on par with the ATH-Pro700MK2)

i say the sony mdr-xb700 i love the products they make and the warranty is great too

Ultrasone Pro 900 with a definite hard think on the Ultrasone HFi 780.

Oooh yeah, these are a really good suggestion too.

OP: What is your budget? There are a lot of suggestions in here from the $100 range up into well past the $350-$00 range, so it's hard to say what would be best. I mean if your budget is only $100-$150 then the ATH-M50's, but if you can go for $350 then the Ultrasone Pro 900's would be better.

around 350$, price of dr.dre beats studios

i was looking at the "Audio Technica ATH-AD700X" mostly because of the nice price of 149$ at my local computer store, but im willing to spend the money, if the sound quality is that much better,

i personally find beats, sound really good, but i havent used any "audiophile" headphones before and im interested in trying new headphones out!

Sony XB700 or XB1000 if you want a HUGE headphone that essentially is the most bass with much better comfort and sound quality even though I would personally not like them.

Or the Beyer DT770. If you go to headfi and look on the FS you might see some Darth beyers which are modded 770s and fantastic for rap.

For that price, I would say definitely the Ultrasone Pro 900's.

Hell no. Nothing can short of some very serious gear or a train going by. I don't know why they list those specs.

Nearly any speaker driver can produce 30, 20 and even 10Hz signals, it just can't generate the standing wave necessary to fill your room without a lot of cone surface area, Rvc and ample travel volume. With closed headphones, they're essentially creating an anechoic chamber on your head, so most of the regular requirement is already eliminated. Loudspeakers have to deal with spring force (this includes port compression) + Rvc + Q-value + room volume. Headphones only need to deal with Rvc, and Q-value due to not having to generate the wider sound waves to fill space. If that old myth with headphones being unable to produce low frequency were true, you'd need 8" drivers and 50 feet of room volume to hit 40Hz , which is not the case. Sony has tuned the driver extension at 10Hz to +16dB, so it most certainly reproduces it. You can hear all of the 1812 performance by Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra with Erich Kunzel, just like you would on a JL Audio Fathom F112 subwoofer pair, the brass cannons just won't shake your body because it's not as visceral.

For that price, I would say definitely the Ultrasone Pro 900's.

Be wary of the Ultrasone's though , they have a heavy clamping force around the top part of your head. Some people don't mind them (me) and some hate them.

So make sure where you buy them , they will do exchanges for headphones as some business will not take back used headphones do to health concerns.

If OP decides he doesnt want them, he can just send them to me. I will give them a nice home, free of charge. ;)
