Hey I'm going to college in 11 days and I figured I'm going to need a good set of headphones. Most people don't like Industrial or Darkwave music, so I guess I may need to keep it to myself.

I'm looking for good quality and fairly cheap.. I'm not wanting to spend any more than 40 bucks. Something that won't sound "tinny" and if possible, have some decent bass to them. Lookin' for opinions, and suggestions.. If you could include a link to a place to buy with your suggestion, I would appreciate that. Thanks.
 
i have the HD500s..too bad your not looking to spend $100 cuz these are like the best speakers i have ever heard besides $600+ pair full size towers/ht system etc

This post has nothing to do with headphone suggestions, (although if i had the money I would buy some HDJ 1000's), but any UC in California besides berkely is on the quarter system, so they start late (round the end of sept) and end late (mid june)... that's why I'm still home :D
 
I'm going to be attending WyoTech for Automotive and Applied Service Management.. Their starting dates are the beginning of these months- January, April, July, and October.

I think I'll go with those Sennheiser's.. They claim to have crisp bass? This true?
 
I just found out my dad has the Sennheiser HD600's but he's not buyin' me a pair of those.. Lol.. I just listened to some music with 'em.. Holy shit. Makes my stereo sound like a PC speaker. Yeah my dad is a big huge audio phr34k. He's into the old school tube amplifiers and turn tables. (yes, as in vinyl RECORDS) but hey his shit sounds so good I'd buy it too if I had money coming out of my ass :p

Looks like he's gunna get me the PX200s.. He said they're good too.. So many recommendations on Sennheiser.. He said they're the best name in headphones so..

I'm kinda liking this going off to school thing.. My parents have never ever bought me stuff like this before..
 
I'd go with Sony MDR-V6's

Got 'em refurbed at $40...probably the best closed, <$50 I've heard.

However, having tried my friend's Grado's, I'm definitely considering those for my next upgrade (Open is more natural for me, provided the disturbing other part is less of a concern).
 
Well like I said I'll be in a dorm (going into automotive I'll probably get stuck with some fuckin hicks, no offense intended, who listen to country music) and being a more, well, gothic person, who listens to industrial, darkwave, ebm, etc. I will probably have to keep my music to myself, since some people don't like it... Hopefully if I DO get stuck with people who listen to country, they'll be courteous enough to keep it to themselves, as well.
 
Yeah, I like Vinyl records too. I listen to them all the time at my apartment up at school. Nehoo, this quarter system at the UC schools, are there actually 4 quarters during the regular school year or is one of them actually a summer term?

i used to have some grados (my dads actually but meh) they were the most uncomfortable headphones ive ever seen in my life and they eventually broke because the cables got twisted so much because of the design and then they were basically useless (shorted out)
 
Well my friend's Grado SR60's had a soft pad sewed onto the top part (where it meets the top of your head =D)

These are EASILY more comfortable than my V6's. V6's are obviously nice b/c of their closed design (DJ's, studio), but I'm not doing either--so the tight closed design, I DARESAY, is more uncomfortable than SR60's.

Haha this really makes me laugh the most tho:

There are EASILY more than 10 Grado users here on my campus here (University of Maryland). Two of my hallmates, and even my TA in one of my classes had Grado's--he had SR225's.

My suitemate has had the SR60's for since 2002. I doubt they're going to break anytime soon. Maybe he just takes better care of them?

there are 3 regular quarters, fall, winter and spring. Then there are 2 summer sessions, which are about half as short and cover the same amount of material. I think a normal quarter is about 11 weeks long.

That's about like my school, 3 regular quarters during the year (10 weeks plus 1 for finals) and the same during the summer, but it is sometimes broken in half. Only we don't start at the end of september.
 
we start October 4th I just have to leave the 29th since it's a 20 hour drive ;)

It's an automotive technical school, so everything is different from regular universities.. We don't even really have "finals" like everyone else.. I mean, we do, but see for the first 6 months I'll have to cover everything like brakes, fuel systems, electrical systems, general engine, transmissions, suspension, etc. And each course has it's own final.. The good thing is, there's not too much homework.. Unlike most automotive schools they try to concentrate more with hands-on, in-class work than bookwork.. Since books are only as good as the paper they're printed on once you actually get out in the field.

For me, hopefully I'll do as well as my friend did, and qualify for the Jaguar PACE program. My friend qualified, Jaguar sent him to Orlando Florida for 6 months for additional Jaguar training (all expenses paid, less meals), and he's been working for 3 1/2 years since school and is making 65,000 dollars a year at a Jaguar dealership in Illinois.. Not bad money for being as young as he is.

But anyways, thanks for the suggestions, guys.. I went ahead and went with the PX200's.. I had a few friends of mine who are DJ's recommend those, too.. Should get them later this week and I'll let everyone know what I think of them.
 
I just got a pair of Sennheiser HD 497 today after following the recommendations here. Oh my God :). They are great, especially after using them all day. Very comfy on my head and great for games and music. I listened to some DVD audio on them and it was awesome (Audigy 2 ZS sound card). I also tried them on my Dad's Marantz amp with some opera. Gorgeous. The bass has gotten better throughout the day of use and it's just right now.

I'd call them "not quite closed" headphones. The sound doesn't leak much and you can hear people talking to you if you need to.

Huh, what the... Why are the PX100s priced $2 higher on Newegg than the PX200s... Most places sell the PX200s for slightly more no? 'Least that's what I thought, I went by CompUSA today to see if I could pick up the PX100s locally after reading a bit, but they only carry the PX250s ($130 or so, ouch), so I'll have to order them I guess... Now I'm unsure whether to order them or the PX200s. :confused:
 
I know ... two months ago the PX200s were more expensive then the PX100s.

Of the two..... the PX100s are the better choice if you don't need the isolation the PX200s offer

Now that you're making sense, I agree. The PX100s are technically better, but for a relatively inexpensive and portable set, the PX200s don't sound bad even though they are closed.
 
I see, I kinda figured that might be the case, oh well... I'll go with the PX100s then regardless. I doubt they'll play loud enough to bother others where I usually use my headphones, not sure the PX200s would fit me right anyway. Thanks!
 
yeah, the new Grados use a much better pad, if they are uncomfortable its b/c you have a small head (seriously), you need to bend the strap a little to fit a smaller head (luckily I have a big head). The new pads are great. I'd go with the SR80s over the 60 though.

The old Grado earpads blew and were a bit uncomfortable, but the new ones are much better.

As far as performance, if you are willing to go up to $100, the SR80s are the BEST set of cans you will find for less than $100 (IMHO).

The Sennheiser makes a few decent sub $60 pairs alos (497 I believe)
 
Agreed, I find my SR325s which I got over the summer to be quite comfortable without any adjustments or new pads needed. I do, however, have a big head. :D
 
Well.. I got my PX200's today from Crutchfield.. Very, very very nice! Best headphones I've heard (aside from my Dad's HD600's). I likey!

My friend has a set of Senn 497s, the Grados are FAR superior (even my friend had to admit it). The only phones that I've heard that come close were a pair of $300 Senns I heard at a high dollar audio store (but then again, the $300 Grados beat those, I wonder what those RS-2 sound like? $700 headphones :eek: )

I was under the impression, from the lil blurb @ headroom, that the 80's require a decent amp to sound good.

from THAT understanding (or misunderstanding), I felt if i were to buy one, it'd be either the sub $75 route with the SR60's, or the $200 route with the 225's.
 
If you play games or dont mind having a mic on them I recomend Plantronis Audio 90s they kick ass great sound greta mic and my are fine even after I have beat the hell outa them and only 30 bucks at Best Buy

Not true, while they would sound better run through a headphone amplifier (of course most cans will sound better through an amp), they'll still sound great through any normal output as well (like a decent soundcard, CD player, mp3 player).

My SR80s run through my Klipsch 4.2 (2.1 x 2) setup sounds excellent (w/ Audigy), I've also tried them plugged directly into an SB Live! Gamer card, they sound fantastic. The only time I couldn't get decent sound from them was off an old pos ECS board w/ onboard audio (but everything about that board just blows).
 
Hmm well would you know how these compare to a Sony MDR V6? I'm trying to look for an equivalent with open cans, and yeah, like a said earlier, if the 80's can sound good w/o breaking the bank (SR125 or 225 getting into video card price range), then I'd rather go with the 80's.

Yes, I'm driving them with my SB Live!

My suitemate (just across the hall) uses them, and I hardly ever hear music coming from them. Compared to my V6's, I daresay my V6's leak for than his SR60's, but then again, I'm not whereing my V6's ultratight and closed--as doing so would be uncomfortable as hell.

Of course the whole uncomfortable part of the V6 is why I"m so interested in finding an open-can eqiuvalanet.
