Headphone and Speakers recommendations for Macbook

Hola,

I've got a friend with a Macbook that's looking for better audio since he hates the Macbook's speakers and the crappy earbuds he's using now. His budget for the items are:
$50 for the Headphones/earbuds
$200 for the 2.1 Speakers setup including any necessary DAC/amp, etc.

He's mainly using it to listen to music. We're located in the U.S.

So far, I've found that this is/was recommended quite often for speakers (the M-Audio AV 40):

But since this is for a Macbook, we're going to need an external DAC/amp and/or sub, correct? If so, what should we get?

+1 to the Audioengine A2. I've got the A2+ for my MBP. They sound quite good for such a small speaker.

The Klipsch Promedia 2.1 is another good system for less than $150.

Stupid question but what about the bass for those speakers? i.e .1 of the 2.1 setup he kinda wants?

Though it does look pretty damn good so far.

Where are you seeing it for less than $150? I'm finding it for $200 on Amazon.com.
 
Because your friend is coming from "crappy" audio, I recommend starting with Panasonic RP-TCM125 IEMs. They're about $12 at Amazon, sound amazing & will help him decide how to upgrade. No reason to jump into the deep end before you can doggy paddle...
 
You can get these in the states from Guitar Center: Audo Technica pro5mk2. They are priced at $90 but they do price matching so I showed them an internet ad that had them for $65 and they sold them to me for that much. In my opinion they're on par with the AT-M50 but geared a little more towards clean bass. Been using them for several months now & love them to death.
 
Another A2 recommendation, they're a lot more powerful than then look. They definitely don't lack bass.
