headphone and amp recommendation

been looking at the Sennheiser HD 598, about 300$ dollars at my local pc store in Canada.

looking for other suggestions that has the same price point as the HD598s

would be using them for gaming and music.

I generally listen to hiphop/rap but on rare occasions i listen to metal.

also i dont know much about amps for headphones, is it worth it? any recommendations?

Not sure those would be the absolute best choice for those genres... Another option in the same class are the Beyerdynamic DT-880 or 990... What's gonna be your source for these? The Senn wouldn't necessarily need an amp.

Also, for games you would probably want Dolby Headphone. I would recommend getting something like the Asus Xonar DG and then a separate amplifier for music.

Alternatively, you can get something like the Xonar STX and use it for both, but this would be more for convenience, in my opinion. A ~$270 desktop amplifier and DAC is going to best the STX.

I would also agree that while the 598s look rather nice, they are probably not the best headphone for your use. I like Beyer in this range as well. They are very durable and are extremely comfortable over long sessions. Don't downplay these two properties for desktop use. The 990 is probably the better of the two for bass response, but the 880 might be better for competitive gaming.

This is if you are set on spending $300, however, as there are less expensive models which will fair just as well or better for gaming, but they may not fair as well for music.

Edit: Switched the 880 and the 990 in my description above.

Go to headfi and look for used headphones. It is safe and there are several Canadian members. You want an 880.

The FiiO E7 and E9 are great pair to be had for what you are wanting to do, I will state that like the other suggested, a good sound card may negate the need for either of these products however. As for headphones, the Senn's are nice, and the Beyer DT-990 is ALSO a good addition, but if your looking for gaming as well, I would go with the Senn's HD product line such as the 558 series.

Also, you could go cheaper for the gaming rig if you want, I use sterio phones from JVC, that ran me only $40 and run perfectly well with my ASUS Xonar DG and FiiO E9 for just a gaming setup, but I also dont sound whore and am not competetive. They dont do to bad for music either, but for music, I would go a little more expensive. And if you are completely intent on sound whoring in games, than you would want to go with the more expensive setup all together, the 880's from Senn will be the route to go for sound whoring.

but if your looking for gaming as well, I would go with the Senn's HD product line such as the 558 series.

The 558s and 598s that the OP talked about have very small soundstages and aren't really recommended for games so I don't really understand this recommendation against the Beyers which have fantastic soundstages by comparison. The DT 880 or AKG K701/K702/Q701 or Audio Technica ATH-AD700/ATH-AD900 are what the OP wants to be looking at.
