Hello, Im currently considering buying a HD tuner card for my PC for use over my new 2405. Ive looked at the ATI card that is currently out and it says for receving over the air signals. Now im not sure how good of a picuture i would receive being about 20 miles from the broadcast stations over the air. My question is would i be able to hook up a cable connection to this card if i had the HDTV channels or is this strickly for signals over the air? If not then what would be the best option for watching HDTV over my display using a cable connection? Thanks in advance.
 
For cable you will need the cable companies box to decode their HD signal so the ATi will only do over the air.
 
Hrmm, i found this.
"QAM decoding is under development due to the variations in Cable service providers."
Does anyone have an idea when QAM will be fully developed and supported?

I subscribe to ComcastHD w/ PVR and feed my display with the component connection from my cable box to the 2405fpw. It's has a pretty damn nice on some feeds like Discovery, etc. It was a lot easier to do it this way.. plus I don't lose my subscription HD channels... It's also great with the PIP too.

The great thing about digital transmissions is the fact that you either have a picture or you don't. The differences in quality depend on what is being transmitted and the the receiver that you are using, but degredation due to distance is not really an issue...

P.S. - 20 miles is not really that far, there are plenty of folks that receive OTA HD from 70+ miles away...
 
I reliably get OTA Digital signals from over 60 miles away in Miami. I do have an outdoor antenna though which greatly helps. Even with an indoor antenna 20 miles should be do-able without too much hassle.
 
i have the ATI HDTV wonder and get channels about 20 miles away indoors with the included antenna. It should be fine! BTW all this QAM support is nonsense... the QAM enabled cards will never be able to view encrypted content and as of now there are more OTA channels than anything else. i bought my HDTV wonder for very cheap and its well worth the money to watch football games on :drool:
 
Anyone know of any good external HDTV Tuners or PCI-E 1x tuners? I plan on upgrading to a sn25p machine, and this would suite me best.

Thats exactly all i want it for at the moment. Awesome to know it works from about 20 miles, i think im gonna try it out.

Not sure if anyone has seen this happen, but the indoor antennas for over the air HDTV get messed up picture and singal wise when a cellphone is called from within the same room as the antenna. The signal break up is similar to what happens when a cloud storm breaks up reception for a satellite dish system. Also with Cable HDTV you can hook up some of the cable compaines HD boxes to your computer through the firewire port if the receiver is capable. Probally the best and most effecient way to get HDTV off of a HD from a cable company. You can find more information about that at this link here.
