"Many of you have probably already witnessed an early technology demo that featured this tech, yet it didn't make it into the final game. Well, Valve is not only adding it to the Source engine, but showcasing it in a new level called "The Lost Coast." Interestingly, we're hearing the Steam will detect your hardware specifications to determine if your computer is capable of supporting HDR, but it will be free of charge. As of right now, only a limited number of high-end video cards support this feature"

The latter comments lead me to believe they're specifically referring to 6800 only HDR. I can't find any other news posts anywhere else about it, so if it's been posted just let the thread die.

Wish they were more specific with details :(

Really wish they'd focus on the problems with the source engine first aka... stutter bug(s). Then get with adding the features.

Yeah, Valve putting a knife in Ati's back, you really think so? :D

Next Unreal engine does high precision HDR for Ati cards too, so why not Source?

Man, now that would be funny. Can you imagine that? All that hoopla about Ati being better in Source and the Ati support for the game, then only 6800 series cards can run the HDR. I hope it's not the case, but it's going to be pretty ironic if it's the same thing as Far Cry's HDR and only 6800 GPUs can do it.

I agree it would be wierd, the comment just makes it sound NV exclusive. Since there isn't anything specific that prevents the HL2 HDR we've already seen from running on any DX9 card, it sounds like it's something specific.

And regarding UE3, that's not due out for a long while. We'll be on our next gen cards by the release of UE3. During the showings when the 6800U came out, it was barely pulling 25 FPS, you can see it chop in the outdoor videos. Since nothing will be far passed the 6800U this generation (not including SLI), no company will put out a game that even the top end machines can barely run in 1024 res (or only runs on SLI rigs). UE3 last I heard was slated for 2006/2007 release.

It will most likely work with a 9700 Pro or above. All ATi Dx9 cards and all nvidia 6600+ cards not including the FX's. It was shown already on a 9800 Pro card when the game was first suppose to come out, so you all know.......

As for UE3, they have already stated that the HDR is possible on R300/400 cores. Just that it is done in a different way than on a NV card. It comes at a slightly higher performance hit than the HDR on NV cards.

Not true. Crytek's latest engine demo supports HDR on ATI cards. In fact the demo is purposely built for ATI's cards.

I am also still confused about all the hate for Steam. I personally love it. It actually gets people to update there games instead of playing with old versions forever. It also gets out new offical maps easier. It's easy to get news updates about the game. I have not had a single problem with it at all. Its the best thing for FPS games ever as far as updates go.

But wasn't that a different kind of HDR? I believe it's less advanced then the HDR on Nvidia cards. I think I read that the ATi version was 8bit HDR or something like that whereas the Nvidia HDR was 16bit. All I know is in the thread I saw people were saying that the Nvidia HDR was more vivid and advanced, while the ATi HDR was good, but not quite at Nvidia's level.

i doubt valve would want to put a knife in ati's back, however, they won't to show what their engine is capable of because if developers start using it, it will bring a nice little income.

i just hope this thread doesn't turn into a flame war.

Business is business. They already catered to ATi and now it seems like they might be playing with nvidia too. They're workin' both sides. :)

valve isn't using openEXR hdr, so its going to run on both ati and nvidia cards.

Thank you....

I wish people would realize you don't need nvidia for hdr

Sure, but OpenEXR is still much better...someone posted the other day comparing the ATi HDR in the new FarCry demo vs shots of OpenEXR also running in FarCry...

it's like night and day

i dont have any stutter or crash issues

just like mac vs pc issues is all about the end user (for the most part)

Since the beginning of HL2 I have not experienced one issue of Stuttering. So I have to agree with powerade. ;)

Well....yes and no

HDR in Farcry isn't really a "fair" comparison. Couple of reasons:
1: No direct comparisons in those pictures
2: Farcry's openexr HDR isn't really even "implemented" It's still beta no mater which version is running
But yes the openexr hdr vs the ati hdr (even more beta i'm sure) the openexr takes the crown.

Either way. HDR is HDR.

Um. not really I don't have any stuttering issues either, but there all sorts of reasons for a game not to work right on people's computers. If that weren't true they wouldn't be releasing patches (all game companies)

although for people with stuttering. Try this and see if your performance is better (especially if you have wireless keyboard/mouse)

Start> run >msconfig
Click startup
disable all.
Reboot than run your game. Does it play better now?
Might be your mouse/keyboard software. Give it a shot. Can't hurt.

And for those of you whom already haven't, here's a fun little HDR demo to play with: Linkage

Run the exe, and feast your eyes on some quality HDR fun. :)

Is that necessarily a good idea? I see my ATi drivers listed.. so don't disable all.

Farcry's OpenEXR looks fake to me, too over the top. ALSO not supporting AA is a huge negative.

Hopefully the new HDR from Crytek and Valve will look much more realisic, and work with any user selected setting.

ive found the HDR use in farcry to be a little overkill. In fact was debating buying a 6800GT over my x800xt when I first heard about it, but it just looks overkill. If valve does impliment it, I just hope they do it well and make it a softer effect. This will also hopefully reduce the GPU load.

It does blow me away though that people think unreal engine 3 games will run that bad on modern pcs. Arent the first games using UE3 scheduled for next year. My 9800pro which is over a year now holds up very nicely on todays games still

the stuttering happens on the best of the best ie even hard ocp saw it ...and great for those that don't have it, but valve has admitted that it is a source engine prob( actually multiple probs)this is one of those cases where just once the end user is NOT at fault..

so is the performance.

I had the sound stuttering problems, but the latest patches seem to have cleared it up for the most part.. it definately wasn't as smooth as an experience (as far as the gameplay) compared to doom3.. but I have to admit I have enjoyed the delivery of the game itself.. it installed fine, updated fine, steam has worked flawlessly from day one, the source engine supports my 7.1 speaker set up which is VERY sweet.. just the growing pains of the stuttering problem have held the game back.. but it's only in HL2.. counter strike and HL1: Source are fine..

I'm curious on how HDR will work. not sure if it will be worth it to turn off AA and AF just to get HDR running at a decent level..

They could fix the random crashing to the desktop, too.

I'm guessing the problem you're experiencing is that your computer is unstable, maybe try running a lower overclock.

anyone getting studdering is just a user conflict

hit start, run, dxdiag.exe sound tab, no acceleration

Yeah, not to start a flame war, but HL2 came loaded with bugs (D3 was basically bug-free, thanks id).

True the HDR in Far Cry is a bit too much, but those settings can be changed. I personally forgot i had rthdribl on my computer, and i never read the title. Never realized it was HDR..heh...

But i do hope that valve implements a full HDR (as compared to the semi-pseudo-ati card compatible- HDR in HL2 atm. So what if x800s arent getting it? The engine is already optimized for them...

Not really true. The stuttering is still one of a number of engine issues. Has been discussed forever and ever.

i dont get the stuttering :O but i get the random crash within 2 mins with looping sound :/

Disabling all in msconfig start up is safe. All programs in there aren't necessary to boot your computer. The ATI "drivers" you see in there are either CCC if you are using it or ...I just went blank (not on home computer right now) But either way it's safe to turn it off all on start up. You're mostly testing to see if it can help your stuttering problem in HL2.

This worked for me in other games (Vampire Bloodlines) using the source engine and fixed my computer stuttering. Then I went on to find out it's a lot to do with wireless software (in my situation at least) if not installed properly/conflicts.

Get the same thing man, started a thread about it a while back. Not always within two minutes, but usually within an 30 minutes.
