Hey guys,

I have a buddy that is look for an HDMI cable to run from his computer (DVI) to his TV. Since HDMI can carry sound and video cards dont render sound, is there any HDMI cable that is DVI+Audio -> HDMI? He wants to use just one cable. thanks

In fact, you can get the audio from a PC to a TV (or receiver), with just one HDMI cable from the video card.

You can buy cables that are DVI -> HDMI, or most video cards come with a DVI -> HDMI adapter.

Actually, some vid cards support audio passthrough and need a jumper cable to the soundcard/mobo. Some vid cards have realtek audio chips on them thus not requiring a jumper cable for audio.

So, the next question would be "what card is your buddy running?"

As far as a DVI->HDMI cable you can pick one of those up at Circuit City or BestBuy, possibly even Walmart on the cheap. ATI makes a good DVI to HDMI converter dongle that works pretty good as well.

If you're looking for an DVI-HDMI cable, monoprice is the best place to get it. their cables are very good quality but really cheap compared to best buy, circuit city, etc. i always get all my cables from them and have only had one problem: they sent me a 25ft cable instead of a 12ft but they then sent me the 12ft anyways and I didn't have to send back the 25ft. Their service is the best.

i will have to ask which system he will be putting on the tv, but if i had to guess, it will probably be his gaming rig with an 8800gt in it

To get sound, you need an HDMI out (on a card that also supports it), not a DVI out + adaptor. DVI does not do sound.
