If i have a hdd error when i start up my computer build for the first time can i just buy a windows xp disc and reformat it?

Depends on what the problem is. If it is OS related then yes, otherwise no.

So if it is not does that mean i have to get another hdd?
If there is a physical problem with the hard drive, then you need to get a new HDD because the old one is failing.

However the current hard drive might be under warranty so you could get an RMA exchange from the manufacturer.

-was it a drive you used with a previous build? if yes...
-did your reinstall windows XP on the new build?

If no - what is the exact error?

What happened was i put the hdd into a computer and it saved windows on it so i tried to format it so i could put it in the comp i am building and after it was done i restarted the comp and just said that there was an error and i cant go any further than that just to the error sign so i was wondering if i could just buy another windows then format the whole thing from there?

That what you would normally do with a new build: reinstall windows from scratch. Otherwise it will not recognize your chipset drivers and will return a BSOD error.

If there is a physical error on the hard drive buying another version of windows and installing it won't necessarily solve the problem. You could end up in the same place with the same error. If you go to the drive manufacturers web site you should be able to download a free utility to check the drive for errors. Now if you moved the drive and didn't re-install windows thats a different kettle of fish. New hardware means new install. Re-installing windows would likely fix the problem in that case.

I didnt install a new OS yet and i saw the error on the dell i put it in then i put it into the comp i am building but have not turned it on. so should i just go get another windows and reformat the drive now or not?

If you are moving the drive with windows installed on it from one PC to another PC with different hardware, you should re-install windows on the new PC so you have all the correct drivers for the new hardware. If you only have one Windows XP CD and you want to install windows on the new PC and the old one you will need to buy another XP CD or license.

I dont have any windows xp CD so i should just put the hdd in the comp i am building switch it on and install a new windows xp with my drivers?

Alternativly go buy windows xp, put HDD in new computer, put xp cd in cd drive, start the cd but instead of installing new, select repair. This will reinstall windows for your new hardware but keep all your existing files. Then simply install your new drivers.

Note: you will have to install service packs again.

Ok, But what if i can't get into the BIOS or something then how would i boot the Windows XP cd from there?

you can get into the bios as long as your motherboard is okay:) then you can just set the first boot device to CD-ROM and go from there
