It's simply amazing how funny stuff is when you've been awake for lengthy periods of time...

...not that I speak from experience or anything....

btw...hows that LED comming? did you put the cap in series? I thought I suggested that at first...but that was quite a few posts ago and I don't feel like reading.. :p
 
I too just gave this a try, with success. I ended up using a small 25V 100uF Cap from a old mobo. Gives a little tiny glow after the light comes on and goes off. Just enough to look neat. Now to make the power light slowly glow like macs do, remeber seeing how to do it in another thread.

Oh and just one more thing, dont forget that resistor when using a 12V line, bad stuff happens... well let the picture tell what happened:

It's alot funnier than Clippy and that animated search dog. They don't live in my software no more either.
 
well mine is doing well so far.. tommorow i will try hard to attempt to do the outer ring, i hope it comes out well. :)

i used to love this small modding escapades, but now i just don't have enough time cause of the job and school.
 
i got mine to work...bought stuff from radioshack...

the breadboard was expensive (over 8 bucks), but it's nifty enough!

i wasted $.69 on the wrong resisters so i say forget them! it works fine how i have it...

It doesnt have to be big at all. Just solder a resistor, LED and Cap together.

If space doesnt concern you then you can use a board to put it all on. Mine works fine as is, just make sure to shrink wrap all bare metal together to prevent shorts ;)
 
Well,

After ALL that work I decided to take the cap back out. Theres a problem when using them with the HDD lights. Lets say the HDD is doing a little work and the light is barely or intermittenly flashing (without the cap). The problem lies in the cap doesnt have enough juice, when there is a little activity. The header doesnt produce enough juice to power the cap, and the light up. HOWEVER when the hdd is doing heavy loading, movies, games, etc. the light works wonderfully. Inbetween access points the light dims and fires back up.

I, for one like to see when the HD does every little thing. Others may feel differently.

Oh well I learned something anyway. Knowledge IS everything, isnt it? (well almost everything ;) )

so you want the led to fire up instantly then fade out? or are you wasting your time here?

A fading HDD LED is just averaging the digital HDD signal with hysterias. by definition, this means that you lose data. you cant have it both ways, so make up your mind.

but if you want instant on, but fade off, just add a diode over the resistor like so:

Its a bit difficult to explain. Do you know when the HDD light flashes, when it access's data, how sometimes the led is not fully on but it intermittemly flashes.

That is when the led doesnt turn on, is when it is intermittenly flashing (this is with the cap installed). It seems like the cap soaks up all, of what little power there is, not allowing the led to reviece enough voltage to light up. I also have 2 caps, one 100uF one and a 47uF one, they keep the light on for the amount of time I was originally looking for.

If I were get a diode, what type/kind would I use. I have no experience with diodes. Also what do they do, Ive seen them in local electronics shops, but have no idea wht they are used for.
