Hdd Led like a mac?

I been looking all day on the mod on how to do it.

the hdd light instead of blinking it fades, and they showed how to do it with a normal pc.
anyone know where to find it?
 
umm...you can get your idea from here (but personally I think the segmented meter is cooler).

basically to get it to fade you can just put a cap in line with the LED I think. When the initial power is turned off, the energy stored in the cap will keep the LED lit until it fades away.
 
holy crap u are right.. a cap would def work but i need to know what kind of cap i need to get..

electrolitic, the higher the value the longer/slower the fade

EDIT: sry for being vauge, start at 47uf and go up from there
 
I'd say it would depend on how slow you want it to fade. try a 220uf 25v to start with. They're fairly common on just about any old computer part. I've got a whole tin full of them that I've salvaged from old motherboards/expansion cards.

I don't know the math behind figuring out the timing/drain rate of the LED and cap...so I'd say experimenting with a few different values may prove to be your best bet.
 
well i don't want a fade long, i am gonna dig in my brothers electronic parts.. he's got all types of caps.
 
if you don't want a long fade, start with theshadow27's recommendation. The 220uf I originally gave will probably allow it to fade in a couple seconds.
 
ok i only found 100uf so far but there was a lot to dig through..

anyway to test this thing with like 9v battery

the info on it is like temps and 25v and 100uF
 
if the rating on the cap is 25v, yes, you can test it with a 9v battery....but if you hook up an LED to the cap, don't expect it to last too long since you'll effectively be storing 9v in the cap for discharge (of course, if the cap has long enough leads, bend them around each side, charge it and then throw it to someone and say "think quick"...upon catching it they'll get zapped...not that we ever did that in electronics labs or anything... :D )

if you can make a basic circuit, use the 9v for the source , put a switch on the + side. run the + to the + on the CAP (very important if it's polarized), run the - on the cap to the + on the LED, run the - on the LED to the - on the 9v. of course, if you don't want to feed 9v to your poor LED, you'll have to put a resistor inline between the cap and the LED. You may have to google up "LED resistor calculator" to get a value.

turn the switch on and it should light the LED and charge the cap. turn the switch off and you should see the cap feed the LED until it fades out.
 
really it can zap u? i have zillions of leds and they are old, and cheap, and also i use a lamp that can stand 9v for a long time. anyway thanks for help i will try it.

yeah...it'll zap you alright. :D The ones we used were 30v and 60v. I think the 60v ones we used left marks :p

But it also depends on how quickly the cap bleeds off the stored energy when not in a circuit. some lose it faster than others.

let us know how it goes with the testing. Hell, I may try it tonight if I get board :p
 
to make the fade go slower, you can put a resistor on both sides of the capacitor, on the feed to make the fade in slower and on the output to make the fade out slower (that is if you dont find a cap that will work as slow as you want straight to the nine volt battery. I have a book at home that would pair certain caps and resistors and tell you the charge time, however, im not at home so I dont have it, go to google and type in capacitor delay or something to that effect, or you can wait till i get home, I'll edit in the chart when I do.

if anyone is having trouble finding these 100µF to 220µF, try looking in some cordless home phones. (all from garage sales ;) )

if you're like me, you have like 10+ phones in a box in the storage room. :D

i pryed one of them open and found a couple 220µF 16v caps in there.
 
While we're on the subject, cn anyone suggest a way to get the HDD LED to "throb" like it's breathing, like a mac does in sleep mode? That is most outrageously cool, but iunno how to make it work..
 
usually when your comp is in suspend/stand-by, the light flashes already. i'm not an electrical engineer, but i think it might fade on and go off suddenly (assuming you are using the correct size of cap.
 
sounds like a cool project, i would like to do this since my case does not even have a hdd led (older style coolermaster atc-710 sx2)
 
hmmm - anyone able to help? I can just see this lovely blue LED at the froont of my gleaming white new Silverstone TJ-05, gently pulsating... so cool...
 
wouldn't it just blink randomly in tune with hundreds of other invisible LEDs?
 
If you want a power led that fades into many colors, just grab one of those Pens that have the LED's and changes colors...it's a standard LED but it has the circuitry and multicolored LED's built into it already. I put it on my case when I was bored. Took less than five minutes, so it's needless to say I was back to being bored in a short period of time...

I'll take a .mov of it with my digicam and post a link to it this evening if I get time. Does have a cool effect though...
 
^^ thats to hard to do, ill just get rid of my HDD led and power led.maby have them internal then i can look if i wanna, or even a switch
 
that skull is amazing, and i like the speed of the fade on it.

i want to know if its possible to have the HDD led just be as it is, and the two blue illuminations do the fading, anyone think it would look good?
 
I think that would be better than the hdd idea personally.

it was very simple to make if anyone was worrying about that aspect of it, and you can find most of the stuff that you need on old motherboards, video cards, nics or other random hardware. the only thing i got lucky and had was the ic chip, which i had from a highschool project
 
thats whats gr8 about these mini mods, its a lot of fun, and it gives some old junk some usefullness..
 
found one of those 4N35 optoisolators on an old isa modem card. it's all about figuring out which way everything goes from here on...

EDIT: found a 22µF cap on the same card...imagine that!
 
ok finally sat down and did the first stage of my hdd mod.. i have loads of caps and only 1 worked which was 1000u 25v..

this is how my wiring looks

the fade at first looked good but now looks a little too slow..
my brother in law suggested that i make the cap in series to the led and see if that
will work..
