i heard the only way to make a "Backup" on another hdd is to use a cloner? is this true? and is their a freeware i can download?

how about Norton Ghost..you can back up drives or copy them to other drives. It's not freeware though.
 
There was a free version of Ghost before Norton bought it, I forget who made it though, and it doesn't support NTFS anyway :(

Norton Ghost does NTFS... It was the old old version before it was Norton's that didn't.
 
Or, once again, use the free unix-based utility g4u.

It's part of the Ultimate Boot CD, which I can't stress enough, is pretty much essential to anyone who uses a computer (x86, that is).
