This is a new build, P5K / 6550 with 4 g memory running Vista 64.
When the machine is idle, the HDD light blinks once per second. and it just keeps doing it. Any idea what's going on?
Seems like I could get a premature HD failure if this goes on for a few years!

Thanks

indexing/other stuff, hit ctl-shift-esc, go to performance -> resource monitor then figure that shit out.

oh, there's no such thing as "premature" drive failure in a few "years", generally HD warranties are 3 years, just breaking your 3 year mark, so yeah, don't expect them to last.

I posted in the other as well because I have the same issue in XP. It bugs me cause my last motherboard, it didn't do this. I could look at the HD LED and know when everything had stopped.
It is irritating.

When I load a dos based program like memtest or a boot disc it doesn't do it. I;ve even reformatted and reinstalled and it starts doing it as soon as windows gets through loading all of it's installation files and gets ready to install. I can sit there and let it finish it's stuff and ask me if I want to continue and not press the button to install and blink, blink, blink, blink...........around once per second. Nothing else going on, windows just waiting to install.
Driving me nuts.
