HD5770 Performance Lacking

It used to be you had to pay $300+ to get any kind of reasonable performance for a video card. Think about it...

At its current price, it would be nice to have at least a 192 bit bus on it.

A 5770 at $100 would be a bargain, I'd like to see them at that price by Dec.

I doubt that would happen. Before there is a drop in msrp, you will see rebates. Some stores will have sales on them also. Both of those with Bing and you have a hot deal.

didn't you post that you were doing 5770 crossfire comparisons with a 5850?

Yes.

I have been discussing which set up is better with others who are running either a single HD5850 or 2 HD5770s in Xfire.
Also gathered data from hwbot.org

Not enough information yet to declare a clear winner.
Very few people have 2 HD5770s for Xfire.

Yes the card would've been great and maybe event better than the 4890 if it had a 192 bit bus, but it doesnt.

What does 159.99 gives you:

+Increased performance per watt
+DX11 & OpenGL support
+Low power consumption (not the same as the first one)
+Eyefinity (some 3d games and 2d applications)

All this with almost* 4870 performance.

Reviews are there, if you dont feel that it fits your need then dont complain, wait for prices to drop, or save for a better card, go for nvidia, wait for larrabee.

And last, plz if you had a 4870 or 4890 stop complaining about the 5770 dont being fast enough (ATI didnt planned for you guys to upgrade to 5770, they want you to buy 5850 or better!). It wasnt supposed to be.

Imo AMD/ATI team, should really be congratulated for making in less than 18months a product that consumes far more less and delivers almost 100% of the last generation, that is really an accomplishment, that was/is their goal, to deliver the best performance per watt, hence the 'evergreen' code name.

Be interesting to see how well a 5770 runs versus a 4870 early next year when stuff built for DX11 like Aliens vs. Predator come out, plus driver evolution/optimization.

If it can come down a little in price (hopefully with pressure from fermi) and does start to shine a little more it could be a really nice nice mid-range card.

Basically the 5870 and 5850 came roaring onto the scene with such great performance for the money then when a mediocre card like the 5770 comes out and still has to compete with the 4870 (which is cheaper) it just seems, well, mediocre. What else can you say. Sure yeah it will mature with DX11, but so will all the other cards. Atleast the 5750 is priced to combat the GTS250.

QFT. The 5770 isn't meant for 4870/4890 users, but for people with 4770/4830/4850.

Don't agree with you there.

HD5770 offers a few things that the HD4870 and HD4890 don't.

Direct X11 is one thing.
Eyefinity is another.
40nm Power usage for less heat and better power usage is another.

These reasons alone are enough of a good reason to use these cards in a Windows 7 system.

Performance wise the HD5770 is no slouch. Just lacks a little more performance to really make a statement as a 5000 series card. Lower price to make current HD5770 flavor more inviting.

I still think they are going to be very popular and wouldn't doubt that they become a hard item to come by.

I think you might be a bit delusional, who the hell would downgrade from a 4870 to a 5770? unless you really don't need the power to game, in which case get a 4350 and call it a day. Spending $150 to have less performance, and features the card probably can't push because it doesn't have the power to is pretty stupid.

these cards are for people with slower cards then a 4870 and for people building new budget or mainstream system, not a high end gaming machine. Using 2 of these in CF instead of a single 5850 is pretty stupid too. as it was proven YEARS ago that sli/xf with anything other then high perf cards is useless as there is usually a single card which is faster then them in CF/SLI.

Essentially you will end up with something slower then a 4870x2 and costs about the same as a 5870
800sp x 2 - scaling % ~= 5850 i'd say but the 5850 will use less power and perform better where CF is not supported and cost less

The 5770 is not for 4870/4890 users because it's a sideways upgrade at best. The 5870/5850 is for 4870/4890 folks. They're enthusiast cards replacing enthusiast cards. The 5770 is a mid-end card at best. Although I do agree with you:)eek:) that it's a very nice card for the intended market. I will say that AMD probably priced the 5770 about $20 too high. But I can't blame them for making the best of the head start that they have over Nvidia this gen.

Yeah I know how it works, I'd just like to see them at $100 by Dec.

He is right and you are wrong.

All those points you mentioned are good selling points but you didn't post the major reason for buying an expensive videocard (for general home use). Gaming performance.

There will be a few 4870/90 owners who end up with a 5770 but the percentage will be very small. Most of those users will replace their card with a faster card, not a slower one.

Not sure what the OP is complaining about. All the benchmarks showed on average the HD 5770 is a little weaker than the HD 4870 performance wise.

This thread is really going nowhere since all the info is basically a rehash.

How about some Mod out there just lock this thread?

lol yeah still...what I meant is that there is no reason to complain about the 5770 other that its price (for some), you are paying for the features and almost same 4870 performance, you dont like them? you dont buy it END!!.

Here's a hint:

Who wants a 5770 anyways? Plus, you've got a 5850.. why does it matter to you exactly?

Some things (like the 5770...) work best in pairs! :) Honestly I only considered buying 5770 crossfire as an alternative to the 5870. By itself the 5770 performs roughly like my Nvidia 260(216 shader) card and would not be much worth to "upgrade" to. But as a crossfire combo it sure packs a decent punch.

I wish HardOCP would run an article to confirm or disprove what other sites have found.

I'd like to see more in depth reviews on HD5770 Xfire as well.

I've seen quite a few people jumping on HD5770 Xfire configuration over single HD5850 in hopes of attaining performance of HD5870 for less cost than a HD5870.

ugh where did the media ever say that? they said that the 5870 would be 1.6x as fast as the 4890 not the 5770 to the 4770

I read about the 1.6x performance increase online.

Here is 1 source:http://vr-zone.com/articles/juniper...-and-juniper-le-is-hd-5750/7626.html?doc=7626

From the article:

One of the reason why AMD is not mass producing Radeon HD 4700 (RV740) series now is because HD 5700 series will be replacing it soon and will come one month after HD 5800 series. It will meet head on against the NVIDIA's D10P1 (GT215) series in October so expect a full fledge war then. With a performance target of 1.6x over the HD 4770 and 1.2x over the HD 4750, they are surely packed with enough power to pit against the NVIDIA's lineup. Pair them up and you will get a boost of 1.8x which is roughly the performance of a Cypress card

I love the thought of 5770CF. Been doing searches on it in this forum for a possible htpc set up. I think 5770 Quad-Fire should beat a 5850 1GB.

5770 CF will never be as fast as a 5870
5870 has 2x the hw of a 5770 in 1 chip , so no CF scaling issues. so 5770 CF will be SLOWER then a 5870, probably around the same as a 5850 until you hit higher res where a 5850 will probably be faster

that's not what the anandtech benchies show.................

hey sonda, get a job and work for 3 hours. 3x$15=$45. that should be enough to make up whatever price discrepancy youre complaining about. then you can start gaming on your rig and stop posting X770 threads. think of the time youll save not spending 5 hours a day on [H] griping about X770s! wow this plan would pay for itself in no time! and only for 3 hours' investment!

My career is one thing.
My RIG is my hobby.

I don't mind spending time researching the hardware I want to put in my RIG.

I have not seen a 5770 quad fire yet but there is a triple crossfire article at the same place.

http://www.guru3d.com/article/radeon-hd-5770-in-3way-crossfirex-review-test/11

The article shows triple 5770 crossfire does better than the 5850 and is compartible to a 5870 if the game is suited toward multi GPU setups. If not, games like Crysis a 5770 crossfire setup won't do as well. Having a 5870 would be a more stable solution, but of course costs more.

You still haven't answered my question from another thread. Why not just save up and buy a 5870 like the rest of us and stop deliberating over these low-end/mainstream cards? I really don't see the point.

You make enough threads here that you are clearly an enthusiast so why not buy an enthusiast card?

Your obsession with these low-end cards makes no sense given their price/performance bracket.

That article really shows why the 5850 is much better actually. It's as fast as a 4870x2...creeping up towards a gtx295...and it's a single card solution.

However, that article doesn't point out minimum fps...which is why the 5870 and 5850 may possibly give you a smoother overrall game. It's really a no brainer...5770 Tri-fire or Quad-fire for benching, and a 5850 or 5870 for gamers. Yah I like to bench new cards here and there to see how they perform, but I'd rather enjoy a game.

Most people who get a 5770 like me cant afford a 5850 or 5870. A lot of people wont even be matching them up with core i7's. Mine is matched up with a core 2 quad 6700. I bought mine more for the hdmi out and direct x 11 support.

People arent buying the 5770s expecting 5870 performance.

Understand your perspective.

Believe it or not there are people out there buying 2xH5770s because they think they will be able to beat a HD5850 and have near, equal, or greater performance than a HD5870. I am not making this up.

Do a search in Google. Chances are you will find me discussing this subject.

Back to some of your money logic. Why spend more money for 2 video cards that are not as good as a single? (single being HD5850)
