HD4870 Crossfire problems

Does anyone else get driver errors when in Crossfire mode? I've used the latest drivers and have wiped those and put on drivers from a couple of months ago, same issue persists thought it is less frequent. I haven't tested it a ton yet (like swapping card positions, running huge long tests with only 1 card enabled, etc) but I will when I have time. I was just curious if anyone else has driver failure on a consistent basis or if it's just me.

MSI x58 Pro-E
Asus HD4870 1gb (one is a couple months old, one is new)

Second question, I have my first card running off of my 750w PSU and the second card runs off of a Thermaltake 250w GPU PSU. My 750 has 2 more video card connections, think I can get away with running them both on just a 750?

You could run them easily off your main psu. I'm running 2 4870 1Gb, X3 720BE @ 3.6 and 2 640Gb WDs in raid0 off an Antec Earthwatts 650 without any problem.

When you say "driver error" and "driver failure", what exactly is happening?

First visible problem: if the system goes to standby (not sleep) and I press shift or wiggle the mouse to wake it up, it has tons of weird lines all over the place, screen goes blank, then comes back up with the login screen. As soon as you log in, it says "display driver has failed and recovered." Second visible problem is when I first log into WoW with crossfire enabled, it'll just hang for about 10 seconds then start working again. Doesn't have that problem with crossfire disabled.

Other stuff in the system:

2x IDE DVDRW
1 SATA 7200rpm
1 SATA 10000rpm
1 120mm fan
1 80 mm fan
CPU fan is oversized, I think it has 2 90mm fans but they plug into the motherboard

I'm running Crossfired 4870s on a Corsair 850, so I don't think it's a power issue.

Running WoW with Crossfire enabled does increase the zone load time for me. No clue why.

Standby / Sleep / Hibernation has never really worked well for me on desktops, so I generally just leave it disabled.

(Sorry, I really am trying to help...)

I haven't had any driver errors. 9.5 and 9.6 were both fine. I think you could check your event viewer to see the details of the error. Also, check the BIOS versions on the cards. It hasn't been an issue for me, but I've heard that running different versions can cause issues.

Pretty much the error log just says "Display driver atikmdag stopped responding and has successfully recovered." EventID 4101. Whatever that means.

The BIOS are 2 months different from each other, so I'll try that. Also going to try running on the new card only and see if that's the issue.

Well, I let my computer go into standby mode with just 1 GPU installed (the working one) and it gave me the same artifacty horizontal lines. When I went into Windows though, it didnt say anything about the driver, it instead told me "host process for Windows has stopped" or something like that, and 30 seconds later went BSOD saying BAD_POOL_CALLER. One of the first things I google'd on that said it could be (among other things) a RAM issue. I am currently working through RAM problems as my motherboard does not support the RAM I selected... like a nub. For now, I'm going to assume that is the problem and after fixing it and reinstalling Windows, I'll assume this issue will be fixed. If not, I'll be back. Thanks guys.

Glad you're up and running. Are you still using the extra power supply or are you running both off your main one?

Both running off of the main right now. It's a huge power supply though, longer than the standard size PSU, so I'm considering putting a spare 650w I have in there for better airflow and then using the TT 250 as well. At this point though, heat doesn't *seem* to be an issue, so I'm kind of feeling it out to see if any change is necessary at all.

I can run 4890s in cf with a oc quad on a corsair hx620 psu with no problems.
