HD4850 and 1920x1080 2AA

My 9800gt is struggling with Fallout at 1920x1080 so I'm looking at getting a 4850 1gb as a replacement. Will it be enough for that res and at least 2x AA or should I get a 4870/260 instead? This will be with a q6600 and 4g ddr2 800. Would like to hear personal experiences. Thanks.
 
I think for 1920x and above, you need at least a 4870/260. I would go with a 1gb 4870 since their prices are dropping like crazy. I wouldn't even look at the 260 unless Nvidia decides to drop its price.

This is not from personal experience (yet, still waiting for my 4870 in the mail) but from benches.
 
That's what I'm thinking too but I'm really trying to keep it below $150 if I can.

right now with the sales on the 4870 512mb I would get that instead. for best performance grab the one gb model though.
 
4870 1g might just be what I get. Do you guys know how long it is?

The 4870 512mb price dropped to $150 and I'm pretty sure you're going to be able to find a 4870 1GB for about $150 - $175 in the coming week or so. I would look into that.
 
Meh, I would've paid $10-20 more for some of the other cards with the heatsink that vents heat out the back of the case (some are non-reference designs) or for a longer warranty (MSI, XFX, etc.).

They're 9.5" IIRC btw.

Those 4870 512MBs at $150-165 are a ridiculous deal too, isn't the cheapest 4850 like $125 or so? Here's hoping the 1GB versions fall a bit more still before I buy mine! :D
 
Just an aside, if you're only buying this one to play FO3 at 1920x1200 you probably won't even need the 4850 1GB. I'm currently playing on 'Ultra' at 4x AA, 1920x1200 with HDR on a 512MB 4850 @ 700/1100 and I'm yet to see less than 45 fsp. Just some food for thought.
 
Isn't 1GB on the 4850 generally a waste anyway? Unless you're gonna CF them. At the resolutions and AA levels where it would help the 4850's probably already bottlenecked (in demanding games anway, your Crysis, GTA, etc.)... Makes a larger difference on the 4870 and 19200x1200 or higher.
 
I'd say you made a good purchase. Despite popular belief, I always like to buy a heavy vram card. I bought my X1900XT over 3 years ago and people told me that was a waste. I'm getting just barely less memory bandwidth than a 4850 and still playing games like TF2 at 1920 with 4x AA. Granted, It's not always 60fps.

I'm looking at one of those cards myself. I'll probably wait until after I get a replacement laptop though. You'll have to let me know how you like it.
 
TF2 isn't very demanding... Oh and as of today there's several other 4870 1GB cards for the same price as the previously linked one btw ($190), the XFX (lifetime warranty) and MSI (heatpipe cooler + free R6 Vegas) both went down $10-20. I think the XFX is temporarily outta stock though but the rebate's good for a while, and there was another one at $200 or just under... Powercolor maybe.

Great time to be buying a video card, two years ago you couldn't even get an 8800 GTS 320MB for these prices and everyone was bitching how there were literally no mid-range parts from ATI nor NV... And then NV started sandbagging on performance 'till ATI got back into it in '08. :p
