HD3870x2 crossfire question

Hey guys,
I have a 3870 in my computer right now and was wondering if I bought a 3870x2, could I connect it to my other card and have 3x Crossfire?

I have a feeling this won't work but I don't really see a reason why it wouldn't
 
We'll have to wait and see what the deal is with the new Crossfire-X drivers comign out this month, they may just enable support for 2, 3, and 4 cards [which in your case would technically be 2, but 3 gpu's] so it may be possible
 
Now that the cards are kind of out, does anyone know about this question yet?

Seems technically possible to me, but I doubt they'll make such a configuration available at the driver level.
 
Might work, isn't crossfire x anything upto 4 gpu's? Don't see why 1 x2 and a regular 3870 wouldn't work. Bridges are the asme on both afaik, just the x2 has one bridge and the 3870 regular edition has 2.
 
I read that the 3870x2 has native/internal crossfire so that the computer see's it as one card, not dual. On one of the reviews (tech sth :confused: can't remember) the crossfire button isn't even enabled in the control center.
 
I guess were going to have to still wait till theyre actually released to the public, I wrote an email to ati asking about it but never recieved anything back :(

Yeah, I know it's a joke, but the whole "million-watt PSU jokes" are overused and entirely inaccurate. I'm sure you could fit a "6-way crossfire" system with a quadcore processor, and overclock everything on a 1000W PSU, even though CrossfireX probably doesn't go beyond 4 gpus.

LOL @ the GTX being loud, power usage I wont disagree, but the GTX isnt loud in any way shape or form so I dont know where you got that idea. My post was more meant to be humerous then serious but hey since you wanna discuss it, the 3870 X2 is pretty loud from the things I have read so far. I even run my GTX fan at 80% and its not even close to being the loudest thing in my system, and my system is built to be quiet. :D
 
Still no final verdict on this question of using one 3870 with one X2 in crossfire, but I did find one review that mentioned it: http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=3209&p=2
The Radeon HD 3870 X2 features a single CrossFire connector at the top of the PCB, meaning you'll eventually be able to add a second card to it to enable 3X or 4X CrossFire modes (depending on whether you add another 3870 X2 or just a single 3870).

please do, however, I highly doubt you'll be successful yet since I don't think ATI has even enabled two 3870 X2s in crossfire yet, much less mis-matched cards.
 
Well, I didn't know I'd do this, but I bought an X2.
It's on sale for $389 shipped at Microcenter, and I had $340 in my paypal.

Looks like I'll be an early adopter :|

apparetly not. just got my order confirmation, expected ship date of 2.19.08. oh well, this way i'll have time to let the dust settle a bit (drivers etc).

According to one review I have read, the noise factor is less than the 8800 GTX by 2db

There are conflicting reviews it seems, I have seen some still say its loud and some not, so I guess whats loud to one person isnt loud to another.

Dont worry I Picked up 2 3870x2 at launch and have now been told there wont be any crossfire drivers for this card until the end of march:mad:

(the drivers that come with the card do not allow crossfire)

sucks man. hopefully the crossfirex driver comes out soon!
 
I tried last night with one of my 3870x2's and one of my 3870's

I saw no option to enable crossfire with the 8.4 drivers.

I will have to try again with the bridge that came with the 3870x2

The drivers allow Crossfire to be enabled, but no performance increase.

I assume you're talking about two X2s, right?

So the situation with the latest drivers is:

Two 3870 X2s will allow Crossfire to be enabled, but shows no performance increase

One 3870 X2 and one standard 3870 doesn't even allow crossfire to be enabled

Correct. But tonight I will be trying the 3870x2 and 3870 with the Bridge that came with the 3870x2.

ATI Radeon HD 3870 X2 will also provide support for ATI CrossFireX™, the innovative next-generation AMD multi-GPU technology designed to support up to four GPUs. Software support to enable ATI CrossFireX is planned for late Q1 2008.
