I'm pretty much set on getting an HD2, one question though. Is Win Mobile 7 available for it ? Google doesn't answer my question (yes i will do android but if WIn Mobile 7 is better for me why not use my best option)......lots of the HD2's are popping up on Craigslist around me for around $200 (people changing carriers and such) so it seems now is as good of time as any to seriously look at it...

Apparently it can per some videos floating around the internet (which seem to be believable). Can you? No. There is no publicly available way at this point.

k, thats what i figured. I know Android isnt hard to put onto it for a dual boot, from what i can tell Froyo 2.2 is the best route ?

(i'm an iPhone EDGE user atm, no Android experience)

Little Android experience here, but I would stick with WM on it personally. I'm still using my Touch Pro 2 until my Desire Z shows up in the mail tomorrow.

Android 2.2 is by far the best version of Android you'd want to deal with when using the HD2. I have the stock T-Mobile WM6.5.5 ROM on mine (not interested in toying around with that at this point, maybe in the future) and running HyperDroid as my main Android build.

I grabbed a Class 4 16GB microSD from Fry's just yesterday ($28) and what a difference that made over the original Class 2 16GB card HTC supplies with the HD2. It's damned smooth now with almost zero lag doing much of anything, whereas with the Class 2 original card it would stutter a bit every so often.

WM6.5.5 is ok I suppose, I kinda prefer the 6.1 look personally, but it works fine. I spend more time in Android these days but switch back occasionally as some games I like (Bubble Breaker/etc) are still old games that only came out on Windows Mobile.

As for Windows Phone 7, there hasn't been any serious conclusive proof so far that it's working on an HD2 even in spite of all the videos. By that I mean installed directly to the device and not booting off the microSD card, that sort of thing. In time I fully expect someone will get it functional, probably just gut an HD7 and move the ROM over since the two devices are in essence the same exact hardware so it shouldn't be a big hassle to get it done.

There just doesn't seem to be that much interest in WP7 on the HD2 when compared to using Android on it which is infinitely easier to play around with. The inherent limitations of WP7 are probably keeping most modders away from it. It's almost as though Microsoft simply doesn't want people tricking it out so they locked it down quite a bit to curtail such modding.

If it happens, it happens, but after playing with an HD7 yesterday for a bit, then holding that up to the HD2, the HD7 is way behind in my opinion (and I'm not alone).

hmm, so the choice of getting an HD2 is a good one then ? (i've had little experience with it, may 20-40 min hands on), i'm sick of iOS and want android/win mobile....

is there a way to disable data on the HD2(with Android)? Currenty on my iPHone i have a fake APN so it thinks its on but it really isnt......i'm cheap and in wifi hotspots about 90% of the time so data isnt really worth it....

thanks for any input you can give

Can't speak for the Android side, but you definitely can disable cellular data on WM. You'll actually be able to use the dumbphone data plan with it since the IMEI won't be in AT&T's database. Whether it's a good phone choice, well, that's kinda all relative to what you want.

This is actually BS, I had the HD2 on AT&T but they recognized it as a blackberry phone and made it impossible to use it as a regular phone. Be wary if you dont like being charged for data and use AT&T they might screw you on the bill.

Not sure how that is possible. Must have been a fluke. I'm currently using my Touch Pro 2 (and I have 2 of them) on AT&T with the old MediaNet data plan and have been for over a year without incident. I can even go wild with data usage. My record is 6.5gb in one month. Tons of people on xda-developers use unlocked/unbranded (or branded with a different carrier) phones with the dumbphone data plan without issues. You just got unlucky somehow (though I'm still unsure how that's possible).

I am not sure either, one of my jailbroken and unlocked 3G iPhones were also picked up by AT&T recently and I have never used data once with it and got charged a data plan. This is after 9 months on AT&T with the same phone and no problems.

Well, the iPhone makes sense as Apple gives all the IMEIs out to them and unlocking or hacking them won't do a thing in that regard. I actually used an AT&T branded Touch Pro for a while before switching to my Touch Pro 2 (not branded) on the dumbphone plan, but I guess they're more stringent now. I think the only other non-branded phone that gets picked up as a smartphone is the Nexus One as Google handed over the IMEI list as well.

Never got my old touch pro to go work on a dumb phone plan either. Thats fine though since I am about to drop AT&T after I get my damn Droid X working. I have been through at least 10 phones in the last 2 years with AT&T and the last 6 months with them have been a PITA billing wise.

no contract here, had this iphone going on ATT for over a year no charges for data

we are switching to T-Mobile soon(since they let you do no contract with own phones now), so its T-Mobile i'm curious about the most......i'm goign to try finding an unlocked one but if i cant i figure its a T-Mobile phone and i can cross the unlocked hurdle when ig et to it later :D

Look for the frequency bands to check versions. If it's 1700/2100, it's T-Mobile. If you have the T-Mobile branded one, expect to have to pay for data. If it isn't T-Mobile branded, expect to pay a lot more for the phone (since it will be a European, Asian, or Australian model) and have it not work on 3G. If you want cheap with data, you can get unlimited everything for $60 a month with no contract through a subcarrier that works off T-Mobile: http://www.mysimplemobile.com/Simple-Mobile-Plan.aspx

it will definatly be T-Mobile branded, buying via craigslist......i can do the $10 a month data thign if i have to i bet.....not tied to contract for getting phone cheap remember

Sometimes being tied to a contract makes it a little at hard. i sometimes think that I am being charged more than what I usually consume.

Actually with t-mobile. If you are a even more plus customer you do not have to have data. I do not. Both me and my fiance have t-mobile g2's and are on a family even more plus plan now. 750 talk+text no web at all with unlimited nights/weekends/etc. This runs us 69.95 a month plus tax and fees. This is a awesome deal for us since almost every where we go we can get wifi or can wait to use data somewhere else. Once in a while I wish for data though, but its very rarely.

And holy crapola. I was just checking on something. I think that the even more plus plans are going away.

k thats what i figured.....and i preobably know one or two people with T-mobile contracts still......i would have to do that to put Android on the device then, right ?

You follow the procedure you linked to flash a different ROM (be it Windows Mobile or Android). If you wish to use it with a carrier other than T-Mobile, you will need to get the SIM unlock code. The two things are unrelated. The SIM unlock is a lot more straightforward and just involves putting in a short numeric code when you put in an unauthorized SIM.

ya i knew that........so yes you confirmed what i thought..........wish the code was free :D ill probably try finding one that is already unlocked(really needing it this weekend lol)

Saw a posting this morning of a guy selling his HD2 for $125.....he posted late last night.......lets hope i get it, assuming its in good condition and all

picked up the HD2 today, and am itching to get Android going :D

so anyhow, question on android, i have found this:

I cannot figure out which distro is best to download.....the Froyo one? (complete android n00b here), the instructions found on the xda dev site is simple enough for me to follow, just a bit confused on which distro to get......also, to go into win mobile(if i mess osmething up) i just reboot phone correct? Is the Android OS actually opened through the Windows OS?

You can disable data in Android. There are many data widgets in the market place. Use any of those to shut off cellular data.

And I've been using my HD2 for months on ATT and they still think I'm using my Impression from 6 months ago.

1. not a good idea to use a tmobile hd2 or the european one if you are going to use ATT networkfor internet (unless you like gsm or edge speeds), get the austrailia version instead. (Tesla)

2. some of the apps use SMS texting to get data so if you are going to use the internet, make SURE you have unlimited texting as well I believe the weather app and the im app both use sms to communicate........

i've got the phone

i have unlimited texting

i'm switching to T-Mobile soon.......

and your post is pretty irrelevant to my current texting(the weather app does not use text to communicate, it uses data plan)...

does anyone have a comment to my last post? :
