hd replacement alternative?

Pull the hard disk out and see if there's an interposer board on the back of it that connects to the drive's SATA port. You might have to pull this off and stick it on the new drive
 
So I would have to buy a particular hard drive for this?

Most likely not. I mean the laptop will most likely have a 2.5 inch sata notebook drive. Any modern one should do fine provided it is standard dimensions but then again if it was thicker it most likely would not have been made in the last year or so..
 
Here's a pic below. I guess I've been out of the game for far too long. I know it's a 320GB, 5400RPM hard drive, but I don't understand fluctuations in price and features well enough to pick a good alternative. :/

I've got two 2.5" WD Blacks (WD2500BEKT and WD3200BEKT). The 320GB is in my laptop, and the 250GB is in my HTPC. I'm very happy with them.

Of course I bought these last year before prices skyrocketed. On Newegg, these have doubled in price since the flooding.
