hi I known hd films (especially trailers which i am watching) are very requiment...
but i have sempro 2500
2x512 ram
and x1600pro 512 which supports that HD ....newest drivers

i tried cp and ccc and there is no difference That HD's still stuttering...maybe its just bad recorded video - for example Bioshock x06 trailear ....Tell me what you think

a Sempron 2500 is a very weak cpu for anything above 720. I have an Athlon XP 2400 which is a little stronger and it stutters with some 720 HD and all 1080.

But his point is that the GPU is supposed to be doing the accelerating since it has AVIVO.

can it really make up for a slow cpu? I thought GPU acceleration just took some of the load off the cpu. I guess it probably depends on exacty what type of HD he is trying to play. He might be trying to stream them too.

gpu doesnt do alot in showing video its mostly cpu that is working, but i also agree that your sempron is to slow for hd.

GPU's from the Geforce 6000 series and Radeon x1000 actually do a lot more than you think in terms of accelerating HD video.

ATI's X1000 series (X1600 and up) have AVIVO HD video accelleration for certain types of HD formats. If its constantly studdering, its probably a lack of CPU, but if it plays a little and then studders and then plays some more (this is called hitching), its probably because a lack of enough RAM. I think you mentioned you have 512MB, depending on how clean your OS is running and what else you have running (virus scanners, bloatware, windows XP theme, etc.) this could be an innefficient amount of system RAM.

EDIT: I stand corrected, you have 1GB of ram, which should be sufficient. It's most likely the CPU being too weak.

His system should be able to handle it. I have seen an X1600 do 720p and 1080i with virtually 0% CPU utilization. What codecs do these films have?

If you are playing X264 you will need media player classic and CoreAVC.

I also have sound and a slight video stutter when playing movies. I am using the Discoveries_1080 file from the microsoft site listed above for testing. I also get the same problem on non HD movies as well, one example being X-Men The Last Stand from Cinemanow. Oddly enough If I turn hardware acceleration to none in windows media player options the problem goes away but then I'm limited to "non" full screen playback. I am using the latest sound, video and chipset drivers already. I would disable onboard sound to test for that but the video stutter is so slight I'm not sure if I could tell if the problem was still there unlike when listening for it. Any ideas?

I use the K-lite mega codec pack and play movies with Media Player Classic. I get no stuttering on 720(except for some of Apples trailers) and lower HD and thats with an Athlon XP 2400. I think if I used the purevideo I could be able to play all 720 HD stutter free.

I should have upgraded media player to 10 before posting. After doing that the stutter is gone, quality seems to be better and the distortion line along the bottom of the viewable screen is gone.

My sepmron2500 is oc to 2000
About stuttering- its not any huge STUTTER ,its just a little stuttering from time to time but annoying a bit.
I tried with oc and default cpu - the same
instaled and reinstaled drivers+ccc - the same
and if i have wmv acceleration in cp on its getting even worse.

maybe it is related to hardwarre becouse when playing Doom3 engine games like quake4 I can notice the same stuttering( but only in intro of the game !:) i think thats the doomEngine shitty optymalization - no matter anyway....

I seen how bad HD films work on old computers like DURON700 and its not that .
I known the requiments of HD are big but it should work normal with any question on 2500 x1600pro 512mb and 1024 ram -- also my xp install is clean and hd defragmented.

maybe a codec or player - I am using Windows MEdia Player Classic and FFdShow codecs only (Winxp SP2 have most of needed codecs).

your computer is just not up to the task man.

they recommend 3GHZ intel or AMD equivilant to play HD.

sorry for the bad news.

Again, with a video card that offloads video processing, he should be fine.

I like that .The discussion i a heart of all the forums :p
Yes they maybe reccomend 3Ghz and right I have that shitty Sempron2500
What video card they reccomend ?

@HiCZoK:

just use VLC media player (www.videolan.org), and probably all your problems with HD video will be in the past.

Quicktime and Windows decoders for playing HD content (H.264) are rather not optimized or rather coded by the standard.

VLC uses it's own open souce codecs, which are optimized and on my machine, XP2200 (OC to 2400) and ATI Radeon 9100 doesn't give me any troubles (meaning withous shutters) even with 1080p videos.

Try it and report.

Cheers, TomazO!!

BS. I dont believe your setup can run true 1080p HD without stutters. I use the VLC player and my machine is a little better than yours and theres NO way I can play 1080p smoothly.

If you are using FFDShow to decode, be 100% sure you disable POST PROCESSING. This eats up CPU like mad (and will not be offloaded to the GPU). You can do this while you install it (recommended) or by changing it in the FFDShow options.

I had exactly this problem a few months back where Chronicles of Riddick 1080 version would chug quite badly at times.
CPU use was below 40% all the time.

The problem turned out to be the MPEG2 codec.
The only way I can get this video to play completely smooth is to uninstall ffdshow and install the Elecard MPEG2 codec.
http://www.elecard.com/download/index.php

FFDshow seems to interfere with MPEG2 regardless of which codec you select to use.
I now run without FFDshow and have DivX installed instead.

Maybe you are right, because I played only HD content I have, and that is Elephants dream: http://orange.blender.org/download.

This clip plays on my PC and with VLC without any shutter at all.

Can you post any link with other 1920*1080 content?

Cheers, TomazO!!

Any of the Apple 1080 trailers will do. I tried to play a couple of them and even with the VLC player and it wasnt very pretty. Even Apples 720 trailers put more strain on my cpu than the other 720 movies like those in Microsofts HD showcase.

You're lying. An AXP 2200 will NOT PLAY 1080P.

yes i think ffdshow post prosessing may be it .i don't have time to check it right known but will try for sure.. and 2200 is not so bad for 1080 ...maybe you just don't notice stuttering

I would bump up the CPU, since it is so cheap.
Also, try working on the stream. VideoReDo is well worht the money and has a "QuickStream" fix. Also MPEG Repair is free and a good one.

what streaming ? explain more

watching it while it's still downloading...

and for a hardware comparison - my system is a 1.4 athlon with 1 gig of ddr and a FX 5700 256mb vid card. It runs 720p stuff off apples site just fine. 1080p stutters and loses sync with the audio after a minute or so.

k-lite media codec pack in media player classic

Ok, just downloaded the 300 1080p trailer (size 129Mb) from www.apple.com/trailers/ and played it in VLC. Unfortunately, VLC obviusly cannot handle all of the 1080p content without problems so I tried my other weapon, which is in all cases better (but I do not like the user interface much), and the 300 1080p trailer played without any glitch and sound tearing.

If anybody wants to try, then download next codec and player:
- coreavc (http://rapidshare.de/files/23726642/coreavc_pro_1.1.rar.html)
- QuickTime Alternative 1.76 (http://www.free-codecs.com/QuickTime_Alternative_download.htm )
- windows media player classic (http://www.free-codecs.com/Media_Player_Classic_download.htm)

In case you have installed ffdshow, disable the H.264.decoding letting coreavc to do the job:
lalalala6me.jpg

Don't forget to set coreavc codec to be default in windows media player classic:
-> view->options->external filters->add filters and find coreavc video decoder. Choose prefer.

This solutions plays fine almost all 1080p HD content.

Sorry to resurrect such an old thread but I'm also having problems playing 1080p content on my PC. I pulled these vids off a university ftp server so I dunno from where they came originally, they're wmv format though. Most are 1920x800 which play fine, but the 1920x1080 files stutter VERY badly from the start and the audio as well, it cuts out like after every second or so. I'm not an expert on codecs so I'd like some advice on what to do to get these files to play smoothly so I can at least watch them once.

AMD Athlon64 3200+ Socket939
MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum mobo
1GB Kingston DDR400 RAM (dual channel)
Geforce 6800GT (93.71 drivers)
Klite codec pack

Any advice?

Don't use WMV is my advice. I have a much beefier system and always had problems trying to play HD movies in WMV. Either stuttering or visual glitches etc...

play x264/h264 HD movies with CoreAVC + MPC for best results.
