I think I just got a boner...

2gb ram, otherwise pretty much the same as a vanilla 5870.

Take it easy boner boy. ;)
Running 6 displays at acceptable performance will likely require Crossfire.
The additional performance of 2GB over 1GB may be marginal at normal resolution and the GPU may not be fast enough for X-large resolutions.

A 5970 with 6DP and 4GB of memory would make more sense imo. That should have the grunt to do eye infinity with 6 displays. It always struck me that the current 5970 was pretty memory bound - I mean the thing is designed for eye infinity, yet it is effectively a 1GB card (as memory not shared). That doesn't sound a lot for the sort of res eye infinity allows.

sweet, been waiting for this. im guessing it would be released before fermis.

What's display-port monitor availability like in the US now?

What we know for sure is that this is enough of a card for steady 70-80 FPS in World of Warcraft.
..In the Tauren starting zone :D

Putting two gpus As well as 4gbs of memory would be a huge card. A 5970 board size is barely less than the maximum size ATX allows with its spec. Doubling the amount of memory takes extra board space.

Now ATI could do a dual pcb, but that adds to the cost, and is much harder to cool.

Furthermore the 5970 has to be run at lower clock speeds, with the best binned chips to keep under 300watts. A single 5870 has a tdp of 188 watts, if you double the memory you are also adding more heat to that 188 watts (unless you bin the 5870 eyefinity chips so that you are using chips that require less voltage). And you want double that 188 watts to be on a single pcb.

------------------------

Crossfire two 5870 E6 is far more practical from a manufacturing standpoint. You don't have to make super large boards for two cards is just liking having two pcbs. Furthermore you have double the physical area to exhaust the hot air out of the case. Two 200w cards are far easier to cool than 1 400 watt card.

And with ATI as currently done you still need to run Eyefinity from the top card display connections exclusively. You can't connect some of the display connect to the top card and some to the bottom card. Thus you need the top card to have 6 connections. That is why ATI is releasing 5870 E6.

There wouldn't be more memory chips - number of chips is defined mostly by bus width as I understand it, just each memory chip would be twice the size - it would just look and work like any other 5970 only with twice the memory. The only difference would be a few watts extra power as the higher density chips might take a little more, and perhaps slightly different memory timing.

There are other advantages over two 5870's - the 5970 which is effectively xfire on one card works much better with eye infinity then xfire with two separate cards so big advantage there.

Oh, if you effectively do want 2*5870 on one card just saw this today, asus have gone potty and produced this monster:

Probably costs a fortune but it's very [H] :)

A quote from the Anandtech article...
"The 5870E6 will come with 2 mini-DP to DP dongles, 2 mini-DP to single-link DVI dongles, and a single mini-DP to HDMI dongle"

So am I to understand, a 30 inch monitor that needs a dual-link DVI will not be able to use any of the supplied dongles with this card?

wow. that 4GB 5970 looks like a beast!!!

The 3008wfp will be able to use the DP dongle :)

I've been looking to go with eyefinity for my 3 24 inch 1920x1200 screen, but then I spent time researching eyefinity and crossfire. As of yet, there are serious issues with eyefinity in crossfire, with many games only being run off of a single card. Gaming at 5760x1200, I will really need a second card to actually be crunching numbers, instead of sitting there doing nothing. So, I either have to wait and see if ATI gets their drivers sorted out, or hope Fermi doesn't flop, though I expect their drivers to be decent. I have a feeling I am going to be sticking with my dual 260's, possibly adding a 3rd, until early 2011 when the 28nm Fermis should be arriving.

Really though, I hope ATI fixes their drivers and ups production of the 5970. I'd love to have 2 5970's if the drivers support eyefinity correctly.

I'm definitely interested in getting two of these for the added memory per card.

Question: I'm running 3x1900x1200 NEC monitors (currently with 2 DVI-D and 1 active DP adapter). Would I be able to use 3 mini-DP to single-link DVI dongles on this card?
