It's been a while since I put together an AMD box. I'm in the process of ordering components and I wanna make sure I select on that will work. Does a PCI express mobo with an AMD Athlon 64 3800+ Venice need a special PS with a special connector? Will the ASPIRE ATX-AS520W BLACK ATX 520W Power Supply work?

This is going to be for a mid range box. Person I'm building it for is not going to be running intensive game. Maybe age of empires or something. What about the PCIx question? How can I tell when I'm browsing around whether or not a PSU has the right connections for the mobo

"Mid-range box"? That doesn't help..

As far as I know, the 3800+ Venice isn't exactly "mid-range".

Come on guys, can someone just tell me what I need to look for in a PSU just so I can plug it into the SLI mobo I picked out (ASUS A8N SLI) which will have SLI and an AMD chip. that's all I need. I'm not building this PC to OC or anything. Its for a cousin who thinks that the LCD screen that comes with it- is the computer itself. so he's not going to know shit from shiola. Guys are making me feel like a noob here. I just want to make sure that I dont pick a new PS that doesnt have a certain connector that I need for this setup. Thats all. I under stand these things, but Its been a year since I last built a box and Id hate to fall victim to some new trend or standard that I may not be aware of. If I go to newegg, what should I be looking for in the tech details regarding this PS, again just so it works. I dont care about performance, rails, etc. I just want the damn thing to run and be stable for normal office shit, and a few low end games.

well your gonna need to tell us what motherboard you'll be getting for them. just get an nvidia certified SLI power supply if you want to be safe.

SLI PSU's: http://www.hardforum.com/showpost.php?p=1027898520&postcount=6

The OCZ PowerStream 520W is my #1 recommendation. ;)

nuggetz, we can't help you if we don't know what's in the box. After several posts, we now know that you're going to be running a 3800+ Venice and an A8N-SLI... meaning you should consider an ATX12V v2.0 PSU. Now, you still haven't mentioned what video is going into the box, so we can't effectively make a suggestion. If you're going to be running an X300SE, getting the Powerstream 520W would be huge overkill and would be a waste of money ;)

But seeing how you said it's gonna be playing low-end games, why do you need a 3800+ Venice and an A8N-SLI? You can save some money by cutting that down to perhaps an A8N-E and a 3200+ Venice.

Just shooting out suggestions: XClio 450BL. It's got all the connections you'll need.

Well, actually, once I saw my shopping cart total on newegg, I'm going to have to downgrade the processor. Only reason I chose these components is so I can upgrade him in a few months. Didn't want to go AGP. Wanted to be at 939 at least. But you guys are right, the Venice is overkill if he's not going to be doing a lot of gaming. I just wanted to play it safe anyway. Here is what I have so far: NOTHING, dammit newegg, I went through the trouble of saving everything I had in my cart last night and this morning I log in and I dont see anything. Anyone know if the save is local to the machine I was using? Im at work and cant see anything.

Back on topic, I think I had selected an Antec Neo something or another. Looked like a good PSU. I decided to go with that one instead of the aspire. Vid care is gonna be a nVidia 6600 I think. PCIx,
