Has DayZ improved?

The last time I played DayZ was about... 5 or 6 months ago. Maybe longer. It was a great concept but for me, too clunky and buggy to really enjoy. I was wondering if it's improved at all or if it will always be like that due to the Arma engine?

I recently came back to it after rage-quitting in September. They seem to have fixed a lot of the stability issues (I used to get this random degrading framerate problem), and improoved the zombie AI (I haven't been hit through a wall in a while). The hacking is still rampant, though.

When you over-fill a tent or vehicle now, the last item you try to place into it is the one that falls out, so its a lot more difficult to lose loot. It would still be nice if it gave you some kind of warning or something though.

My biggest problem was the developer's public stance against private hives, custom maps, and private servers. Private hives help the hacking problem by giving the individual server admins more control over the hackers (as opposed to the official hive, where the hackers have more control over the server than the admins).

Might solve one problem but creates another: little dictator madmins running the show thinking they're god

At least those are limited to the server in question. Right now you can get hacks for DayZ for free, you don't even need to pay one of those subscription servers. So we have hackers that join a server, teleport everyone into the northern wasteland, then blow them up with a nuclear tipped SCUD missile. They then move on to the next server.

I just recently started playing after quitting months ago. I quit mainly because of the hackers and horrible stability problems. seems a lot better now though

I've been watching a DayZ series by FrankieonPCin1080 (or whatever) all day and he's got me hooked... So I bought and downloaded Arma2. Now I'm reading about how hackers (script kiddies) have almost ruined the game.

So now what? Is it hard to get into a white list server?

Kinda sucks. I always read and trust reviews before I buy so it's my fault for buying a game that has the plauge

Hackers aren't THAT major in my experience. I generally play with my cousin and we just find empty servers...not because of hackers, but because of bandits.

Seems impossible to play with other people on the server without being killed by them. I swear. EVERY TIME I play on a server with even just one other person they'll end up either killing me or attempting to. Bandits are really the main issue in the game now...much more so than hackers (well a lot of hackers are probably bandits anyways).

Either way though the game is super stable now...minus some actual bugs here and there. Definitely much better than it was even a couple months ago. Definitely worth checking out now, like I said, just play on empty servers with friends or by yourself. Nothing more rage inducing then spending 4 hours gathering some great kit just to be killed by some unseen unheard bandit.

Rocket isn't against private hives.

The hacking is what's killing this game, and what's really killed it for me. There's very little point in playing on public hive servers because it's all just a countdown to someone thrashing your experience in one way or another. Private servers can be interesting, but they're usually managed in such a way that PvP becomes the central purpose, and that just isn't what DayZ is supposed to be about.

Banditry I can deal with. Being killed by another player fairly is fine, and it's an integral part of the experience, but being hacked is another. Unless the playing field is level, the game just collapses in on itself.

The mod is still low quality. I ain't even gonna wait for the standalone game because it'll turn into another PVP game.

Biggest current problems with DayZ:
1) Hacking
2) No ability (no matter how difficult) to identify bandits, because their characters simply reset when they die.
3) Sniper rifles - ruins the game. They should be taken out altogether or made e-x-t-r-e-m-e-l-y rare.

I'm still gonna give it a shot but I'm gonna try my best to get into some private hives that are close to stock (without to many extra vehicles and gun mods). FrankieonPCin1080 really made some incredible videos and watching him play gave me the impression that there are some REALLY high caliber players in the game.

From what I've read and seen, scripting is very easy and the difficult nature of the game and awesome players really pissed off the noobs and bad players who just decided to try and ruin the game.

The only issue with hives is it seems there are a lot and I haven't found a way to tell which ones have a high player count with active mods. I missed out on the awesomeness of garys mod before that was sorta ruined and the community died so I really don't wanna miss out on this one.

Nope
ARMA2 AO: set MP filter to "Wasteland" forget DayZ ever existed. profit

Don't really agree with #3, scoped hunting rifles should be the most common pick up for a rifle in the game.

Private hives have made the game more enjoyable. I actually now rate this mod as my all time favorite game; Dethroning Final Fantasy Tactics.

Hacking will always happen in any multiplayer online game, but the private hives are actually policed when ran well and have custom anti-cheats enabled.

There are custom skins for bandits and they do not reset on death. (Do not ask me how I know this. ;))

There are servers with .50 cals completely disabled, if that's your thing and most have seeded vehicle counts so you don't end up running everywhere.

I'd recommend Panthera map for DayZ if you like manageable maps in which to link up with friends, as you can get to most places on foot with relative ease.

Taviana 2.0 if you like massive scale, as it has highways to travel on and a huge bridge linking the twi islands.

Good stuff and merry christmas all!

thanks for the info man, I found this very helpful

Rocket isn't against private hives.

Thats why I said "my biggest problem _was_". Rocket's initial stance on private hives was that they went against the idea of Day Z, fractured the community, and opened the mod up for unwelcome changes (server admins including things like tanks and jets that ruin the experience). He went as far as to say that not only would he not support the idea of allowing private hives or servers, but he would actively try to prevent their use. Locked servers were treated the same as hacking servers (servers run by hackers that would spawn in weapons and then bring them to normal servers), and blacklisted. He held onto that stance for several months. It wasn't until recently that he started welcoming the idea of private hives, as a way to take some of the load off the official servers and improve the experience for everyone.

I think he just accepted the fact that with the current engine, dayz going standalone, and resources available that it was better for the community to have private hives for now. I understand why he took that stance in the beginning and I think if they have a good anti-cheat system going in the standalone it will work.

I think it has improved quite a bit. The server I play on has been real well to me if anyone is interested. The best for me is that it is Rmod.
Name: Slampocalypse Now DayZ: [100 Vehicle][GMT+10][SIDECHAT][3D:ON][CH:ON][SERVER ROLLBACK][START W/TENT
Game: DayZ Browse: DayZ Servers

Can't seem to join it, kicks me back to the menu.

Are there still a million versions and different servers?

i was on slampocalypse the other day.

who has steam, let's get a group going as i'm tired of getting f'd up by bandits. i'm 69 on steam. my dayz name is tacosforsale69

It's improved, although there are still a few things that I find kind of annoying like how zombies spawn in on top of each other rather than spread out around and inside the buildings like they used to. The combat timer is a nice touch too, although I think it should kick in anytime you take damage too, because I think if you get shot at from a player who's a distance away it doesn't kick in and combat quitters can DC quit quick enough if you don't kill them in the 1st or second shot. I think they removed the need to save tents and vehicles as well which was a good move.

They're supposed to change the UI icons too for hunger and blood so it's easier to see what percentage they are at, since they did remove the debug monitor.

Everyone is a bandit in some capacity, my little bambi, what matters is how many guns are pointing in which direction!

I'll PM you if I can find some free time to play this week. (*sigh* I need to win the lotto or something, haha.)

Do I need to install anything special to join that slampocalypse server?

Disregard. Needed to install RMod. I had read that my client would automatically grab it from the server when I attempted to join, but this is apparently false.

Played this a few months ago, but like many others here I quit due to the amounts of hackers I was running in to. I could probably just have bad luck and am thinking of giving it another shot.

After War Z utterly shit the bed , I went back to Day Z and I've been having a blast on a friends server. No hacker nonsense to deal with and so nice to be back.

If you can find a nice private server with decent people Day Z is fantastic , even despite its large faults. But if your doing public stuff than its a total gamble , like any online game.

GOD DAMN IT. the game is fun but seriously like others have mentioned needs work. the zombie routing is absolutely horrible.

opening shit and getting into stuff is impossible when you're in pursuit. love the emotions and how immersive the game is.

finally met up with my friend had a few guns. god damn hacker teleports me and i die.

EDIT.... love hate for the game. i'm currently stuck in a vehicle and cannot get out. i can say i will be logging some hours into this. for those on the fence, buy it and let's team up.

These descriptions remind me of the hacker-infested quagmire that was Jedi Knight. Back when I used to host games for that (on dial-up!) I used to have two things: one was an external program called the Kicker Helper. Hackers used to name their characters with a bunch of symbols and unprintable characters (the character name was read from the filename of your player file, so you could edit it easily) so that it was difficult to kick them. The kicker helper allowed the host to change their name (default was something boring like HACKER1, I used to name my foes things like I NEED A NAP) so that they could be kicked.

The other item I had was a hacked Blastech. This gun went in the same slot as the starter pistol so I almost never used it, so I replaced it with a version that fired Force Destruction (an extremely powerful Force power that used more than half your mana and two bolts of which were almost assured to kill a player) at full auto. That way if a hacker did intrude on one of my games, I could beat them at their own game as well as kick them.

Point of this long winded off-topic rant is that if I do venture into DayZ soon (I did just buy Combined Operations) I might consider being armed with a few hacks of my own. That way if a hacker teleports me to 10,000 feet I can teleport myself harmlessly back to solid ground, and possibly make his life difficult if I figure out who he is.

I always took it as a challenge rather than a nuisance when people would hack in my games in games like MW2 and MW3. Games like this where I can give it right back to them intrigue me further.

I've yet to be affected by a hacker in the 3 weeks I've played, but I have seen them.

the huge draw to this game, for me, is the death penalty. I love starting over with no gear. every restart feels like the start of a new zombie apocalypse movie better than the ones that hit theatres

me too. found this very populated server that has bikes and cars every where. not excessive but not where you will have to talk for 2 miles.

I avoid vehicles at all costs, they make far too much noise. bicycles are definitely the exception haha

Slampocalypse Now DayZ: [100 Vehicle][GMT+10][SIDECHAT][3D:ON][CH:ON][SERVER ROLLBACK][START W/TENT & WEAPON][ACTIVE ADMIN][SAN JOSE, CA] . It is back to a regular server as some could not figure out Rmod also 24 hr daylight

Eh I just can't get around the engine. Someone should do something with the Far cry 3 engine or Crysis engine.

It just all seems horribly clunky.

oh agreed, the engine is atrocious. but the gameplay is extremely addicting

this game is a blast. HOWEVER, it has so many fucking problems it's a joke. i still chug through it but the incident that just happened makes me never want to play it again. i ran up to a shootout with 4 or 5 guys. i stayed back and finished off the last 3. they had 2 choppers, 3 vehicles and a LOAD of gear. i load a vehicle up and head straight to the NW airfield. spent an hour up there looking for people then i hear some action. i'm sitting under a tree then i just all of a sudden fall over and my bones break then i did.

what the fuck?!?!
