Hardware Lockups

My system has been consistently been crashing when running games.

Symptons include:
- System self restarting while in-game after the first 5min for BF2, CS.
- Software errors for D2, and FFXI.
- When system crashes, 4-5 powerup attempts are required for it to initiate the initial startup system check.

Initially, I thought it was my Video card locking up my games (previously a 9600xt), but I've recently bought a 6600gt, and it is producing the same results.

I've checked all the sticks of RAM, even tried using RAM from other working systems, and it produces the same results. So it isnt the memory as many have suggested.

Could this be a CPU overheating problem? If so, would such an issue prevent my computer from booting for the first few attempts?
Or is it more likely given the symptons that it could be a Power problem? or even Motherboard one (even though i purchased a new Asus one fairly recently within the last 2 months).

Motherboard: Asus A7N8X-X Nforce2
Video Card: Gigabyte 6600GT AGP
Memory: 2 x 512MB Kingmax
Power supply: Enermax 350W
Otherdevices: 2 x HDDs, 1 x DVD Drive, 1 x PCI Soundcard

did you try different PSU? and yes - it might be your mobo... as for the CPU overheating - what kind of cooling you've got? what temps are you running?

I just installed MBM5
I'm currently running an Athlon 2600+ (stock speed)
w/ Stock Heatsink/Fan

CPU Diode: 190°F // 88°C
CPU Socket: 145°F // 63°C

I don't know which to go off, or what the acceptable range is for my CPU, if anyone knows that would be appreciated.

Update:
- BIOS CPU Temperature @ 161°F // 72°C

Idle temps?! whoa... if you ask me - it's too hot... it is within the theoretical specs, but... What CPU HSF do you have? make sure it's not full of dust... for me an acceptable temp is 55C - and that's under full load..

I just removed the HSF and cleaned it out, cleaned off the thermal paste and added some Arctic Silver, and it is now running at around 5°C cooler

CPU Diode: 80C
CPU Socket: 63C

I'm using Stock Heatsink/Fan

As mostwanted posted, those temps are in the "acceptible thermal range" but I'd like to see them cooler if that were my system. You're not shoving that PC into a hutch somewhere?

If its not temp related, I'd have to point finger at the PSU.

Basically, +1 vote temp, +1 vote PSU in that order.

Those stock AMD hs/fans are good enough if you arent overclocking. Silly question, when you re-mounted it, it went on the correct way, right?

This definitely sounds heat related. Something is wrong with your CPU/HSF.
