Hey guys,

I have some spare parts lying around, and I was wondeiring if you guys think that they will be fast enough to build a File/FTP Server.

They are:

Athlon K6 450Mhz
128Mb SDRAM
Some ole motherboard

30Gb Hardrive.

I'm not so worried about the hard drive, as it is quite large for what I need it for. But do you think that the Athlon and RAM will be good enought for Win xp and a few apps for ftp serving. Plus a RAID card too. I will be using a new 350W PSU. Not worried about that either.

Let me know what you think.

Thanks

There's no such thing as an Athlon K6 or an Athlon 450. It's probably a K6-2. And yes, if you're not serving lots of users, it'll be fine.

Edit: you may want some more RAM, though.

I'd say go to 256MB RAM at least, but other than that, it'll be a little slow but will serve your purposes nicely.

I haven't seen any benchmarks for a RAID card in an old K6-2 system like that but I'm not sure you would want to run a RAID setup with it. I doubt you are getting a hardware RAID card (has it's own processor) which means the CPU will be doing all work for the RAID setup. Depending on the file access and the type of RAID you plan to use, the CPU may not be up to the task.

Someone here may be able to tell you I don't know shit and that you will be just fine with that CPU with a RAID setup. You may want to look through the Disk Storage Systems subforum to see if anyone in there has a RAID setup on an old K6-2.

I would definitely look into adding at least another 128 meg of RAM to that system, though. 256 meg would be much better than 128.

I have a dual PII 266 box with 256 meg of RAM that I plan on eventually turning into a fileserver but I won't be using RAID in it; just an ATA 100 controller card to allow decent sized drives.

Thanks for all the responses,

It looks like I did leave out some info that I should have said.

For the FTP, there will be a max one user at a time, and for the network sharing, there will only be one computer accessing the RAID array. So its very minimal use. This is why I don't want to go out and buy a new CPU and so on.

As for the RAID array, it will just be JBOD, since there will be 2 80Gb drives, a 120Gb, and a 200Gb drive. I'm not worried about losing the files, they are not that important. I have all my important files backed up.

So with this new info, will my hardware be up to the task?

Thanks

I would want more ram, and cut down every graphical thing on XP to limit memory usage.

I agree, I sure will be, I am just making sure my hardware can support it.

Thanks for all the responses.

Nothing wrong with that setup. I have similar hardware for my fileserver. It will push about 70mbit/sec and averages 50mbit. Then again, I took all the extra sdram I had (768) and shoved it into my 550. But mine does more than just FTP. Its a firewall/router/email/gateway virus scanner/IDS/DHCP/DNS/Samba/kitchen sink box.

Runs just fine
