Doing my hardrive soon, want to get ideas. Then post, Who's is the best loooking window mod.

it might seem counter-intuitive but you want this thread in Cool Cases not Data Storage :p

we concentrate on reliable storage ;)

I do have a Fujitsu, M2266SA,
1.2 Gig SCSI Drive, Full Height 5.25" Form Factor HDD
That I eventually plan on making into a windowed HDD
not even sure it works, but either way its too cool not to
as long as it will spin
its slightly smaller than SFF case
:p

It's just a two gig drive so i'm not worried that much, any tips everyone

i would offer you some tips, but everything I did when I put a window in my Maxtor 60gb is the total opposite of what everyone else suggests. I did mine on my coffee table, left the HD (minus the cover) in a ziploc bag for about a week, cut out the window, saw that there was some dust in the HD so I took a piece of plexi, ripped the protective plastic off of it and used the static electricity to lift the dust out of the HD. I bolted the cover back on, cut another piece of plexi to fit over the hole I cut and used aluminum tape to secure it and seal the cover to the body of the HD. I did all this before I read about getting dust out of the air by using the shower in the bathroom. Oh well, it's been running fine for the past 9-10 months.

Here is a picture of my hard drive window. I didnt cut the whole right for the spot in the glass where the screw goes so the top wouldnt ever go on fully so I tapped it real fast to see if it would work an not get dust in. I worked kinda iffy and wouldnt work but when it started to do good ..it wasnt screwed into the case and i was holding it while the computer was on and dropped it...and it fell on the other harddrive and broke both lmao..still looks neat but dosnt work;D

SORRY FOR THE GIANT PICTURE!

Good Luck

working on mine right now, cover off and drive is in a ziplock bag. About 1/4 they way done cutting the top out, then have to cut the window.

I'll post some pics when I get it done, hoping it will work still, Have some orange LED's I plan to use for lighting the inside of the drive :)

or put another way
12.6 X 9.5 inches

better make that a Plasma display :p

Crazy insane, or insane crazy? I've heard that the higher RPM drives stop working rather quickly. I'm sure Western Digital or one of them will pick up on this and make a few dollars selling windowed HD's yes a pre-mod. But I think sellling it with a 1 year gaurantee alone would warrant the window.

eBay :D
I got a 2 GB hard drive for 5 bucks a while back

I'm gonna try this on the 20 meg quantum drive I have. And, yes, it is MEG, not GIG. It came out of a 386... ;)

I think I might try to get a free hard drive from somwhere and an external enclosure off of ebay and window mod both of them. I really think it would be a waste to window mod a hard drive and stick it in your computer because you wouldn't be able to even see what is happening.

well that depends on how and where you mount the hdd

if you make a custom drive cadge on your case floor, and you have a window, or you mount it in a 5.25 bay with a peace of plexy as the bay blank...

This is my test mod on a non-working drive. Have a working 3 gig here I'm going to start working on soon and, if all goes well, it will go into my current case project.

This is the only pic of mine that I can find right now. It's a 40 gig fujitsu, yes it still works.

These aresome insane mods, man just the stuff I wanted to see, I'm going to attempt this on my 2Gb hardrive that my friend might give me.

Keep posting, this is all great stuff, one question does the whole bathroom on thing while your opening your hardrive really needed to be done?THx

Fine Tolerances

"The image below will help you visualize just how fine the tolerances are in a disc drive. Imagine the disc platters turning at up to 10,000 RPM. Remember that the read-write head and arm are moving back and forth across the surface of the platter in an extremely rapid manner."

Seagate Drive Head " Fly Height" less than 2 microns

Average Human Hair 76 microns

http://www.seagate.com/training/properhandling/unit1/mt1p4.html

Head Slap

"Head slap is when the actuator arm/read-write assembly impacts the platter due to a shock such as a tip-over, a tap with a screwdriver, or an overly aggressive shove to get the drive into a bay. This can also occur if you try to scoot the box across your desk while it is running.

As a result of the impact, tiny indentations can be formed. The material ejected from this impact is scattered about the disc, and when the drive is powered up the heads will pass over this indentation and the ejected material. This can be the equivalent of running over a bowling ball in a go-cart traveling at Mach 813."

yes its important to clean the air, and to keep the interior of the drive as clean as possible. ;)

the fact that your drive is probably only spining at 5400 or 7200 rpm and that the fly height might be a little higher doesnt really matter much, a smog particle, fingerprint, smoke particle or peice of dust can trash the head.

Damn 20mb I thought the 512mb in my 486 was small. i got hella lot of space i should make it my server

Dude thx for the links, very helpful when understanding more the importance of a clean room when doing this modd :)

Is it wise to put my OS on this drive( winXP). It's a 2 GB and that about the amount that XP takes up, so I can leave my more valuable drives for other crap.

let me add this little idea
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Simulated Clean Room originally posted by DeepFreeze
Simulated CLEAN room. Buy or get CLEAR rubbermaid container.
plastic. WASH container thoroughly. Rinse, let air dry.

Then buy long sleeved rubber gloves. duct tape the sleeves to the rubbermaid container with room to move.
NOW ATTACH Duct TAPE rolled over itself. like full circle sticky, like when you roll toilet paper to wipe . (0)
and attach it to 2 SIDES. preferably Adjacent. this will help CATCH particles that will move later on in process.

tape lid and box down on SOLID work table.Preferably on wooden table to decrease chance of static problems. now drill hole about 1" diameter and VACUUM out the air and things in box. SEAL up box.Place duct tape wads around plugged hole to decrease chance of air particles with lint or dust to get into box.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Of course opening and closing the "CleanRoom" would be nice to do in the shower, so that the air that does make it in is less dust laden, other air cleaning technologies, like Ionizers, Hepa Filters, ect could also be employed

What tool do u use to cut and round the Plexi Glass? What dremel attachment do you use?

I've never wired LED's before, so..how do u wire the LEDs in there? The article fails to present the informity on LEDS!

from personal experience I can tell you that employing jigs\patterns and a router can make all that alot easier than the "hand" control of a dremel, it was a "sanding bit"
it might have been shaped like a round over bit

you can also shape oxide bits with some care to custom shapes

but in truth Id be concerned about clogging it up with plastic
and would perfer to use the bladed round over and finish with various grades of sandpaper by hand

many dremel models have quasi-router attachments available
http://www.mytoolstore.com/dremel/router.html

if you note the first roundover bit link, youll see that there is a ball bearing guide, that would rolls against the pattern under the material being cut, making a perfect reproduction dimensionally
the other approach is a standoff attachment that attaches to the router collar and slides against a slightly smaller pattern above the material

the jig is up :p

routing plexiglass is really common, I use it to make router bases, and accessories, even patterns on occassion.
I even made a 4ft long plexiglass compass routerbase for making arches (up to 8ft wide) ;)
