I'm not actually gonna build it, but I"m wondering if any of you can do better than that

the total is $423 I think

it's hardcore fail for a machine but it's very very cheap

fixed the typo and removed the graphics card, the 3200 onboard is good enough for the hardcore budget build

An amalgation of the two setups posted so far with one of my own changes:

$217 - AMD Athlon II X2 240 CPU + Gigabyte GA-MA785GM-US2H AM3/AM2+/AM2 AMD 785G mATX Motherboard + OCZ Reaper HPC 2 x 2GB DDR2 1066 RAM
$55 - Samsung Spinpoint F3 HD502HJ 500GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive
$30 - LG GH22NS50 DVD Burner
$100 - Antec Sonata III ATX Case with Antec Earthwatts 500W PSU
$30 - Windows 7 Pro for Students
---
Total: $432 shipped plus tax.

I'm guessing no gaming will be involved so no need for a video card. I trust Gigabyte + OCZ more than Biostar + AllComponents. So the extra cash is worth it IMO. Note that unlike both builds, my build has a SATA DVD burner, not IDE. As such, better cable management and airflow. The Samsung 500GB drive is significantly faster than the WD AAJS 320GB drive so the extra cash for it is also worth it.

As for the case + PSU, either setups will work just fine. The Antec combo comes with a larger PSU but slightly cramped case while the Corsair + Coolermaster setup comes with a more roomier case and lower PSU.

for $9 more that seems like a good build danny

It's kind of amazing how much better performance you can get out of a machine the more you're willing to spend on it

like given a $600 budget instead of a $423 budget you could build an exponentially better system.

this build cuts a lot of corners but it's probably a good basic web browsing machine, i don't think it's good for much else.

anyway the purpose of this thread is to see if anyone can beat that budget of $423.

I bet if the budget were increased to $600 that a PC with acceptable gaming performance could be built.

well i'm just going off newegg, i'm sure you could get a few bucks off here and there for some components, no question, I'm just talking newegg here.

It's probably harder to do better than that build off Newegg alone.

the worst part is it's definitely a PC that belongs in the shitter immediately after it's built.
