I've been toying with the idea of building a sff system to drive a 24" lcd for work/surfing/media, but I've never built a computer from scratch. I've upgraded things such as hard drive, disk drives, memory, memory cards on my old desktop, but I've never touched the processor, heatsink, psu, etc. I don't really plan to game on it, so no overclocking is needed. So how hard is it to put a processor on a motherboard properly with the paste and such and then making sure it all fits at the same time?

Not too sure on all the specific parts yet, but something along the lines of:
X-Qpack 420?
C2D E6400
<some sort of mobo...>
eVGA 7950GT 256mb
2gb memory
250gb HD
dvd writer

I don't really know if the stock heatsink and fan that comes with the C2D is good enough, also not really sure about the stock psu :confused:

Any tips for a first time builder, or should I just pay someone to put it all together for me? :D
 
That's a pretty informative read, helps a lot. I'm most worried about installing the processor, is it hard? Everything else is pretty much just plug in, but the processor needs the themal paste and all...
 
I wouldn't say it was hard, just install it with the mobo out of the case. Spread a small amount of thermal paste on the cpu with an old credit card or thin bit of plastic :D
 
I read quite a few reviews about the case, and now I'm worried about fitting in a replacement PSU with a dvd writer. Since I read the Lite-on shorter writer was discontinued, what do you Qpack owners use for psu? What's the cut off for depth size before it's too big?

Hellu, no worries, the mobo comes often with some "quick install guides".
I found a short illustration on "installing cpu cooler" taken from Zalmans site.
Just remember ESD! :)
 
You could also get a Microfly case. It accepts a full size DVD drive and PSU with no problems. I have one, and it's pretty easy to work with.

Here is mine, complete with screenshots to see how everything fits My MIcrofly

It is a bit more than a Q-Pack if you get just the case and a separate PSU, and about the same price as the Q-Pack if you get it with one. Directron and MWave have them.
