i finally couldn't take my hard drive whine anymore and starting thinking of a creative solution .. i first thought about suspension w/ rubber bands but that was not pratical...

so i just started looking around for anything that was sound damping, foam etc...

I tried some bubble wrap at the bottom of my hard drive cage and just sat my hard drive on it ..

must have cut the sound in half!!!!

i'm stoked.

try bubble wrap

cheers

Now get some more and bubble wrap the whole case. Leave gaps for the airflow though. It might eliminate all noise. LOL! Hey, if it worked, good for you. Kudos.

it's like night and day

i don't think so .. i only stands about 1/3 the way up my two horizontal 80mm fans in the front.

i can't be worse than case designs with a sideways cage

The SPCR message boards have dozens and dozens of methods that people have used to quiet hard drives, and a lot of them did involve suspending them (usually with bungee rubber and whatnot) but yea... The simplest method is usually setting it on something absorbant.

They also discovered that the part of a HD that usually warms up the most is not even the bottom (hence there's not much danger in setting it on a soft surface), it's actually the sides. Typical drive cages conduct some heat away from the drive but as long as you're not completely wrapping it un bubble wrap you shouldn't need anything attached to it's sides.

I've had my 160gb Seagate drive set on a thick slab of foam (like two inches) at the bottom front of my case for months without any issues. Since my case has these removable drive sleds it's fairly easy to screw it on one and insert it back in the same space when I'm moving the case.

None of these methods will do anything for seek noise, but they can completely eliminate vibrational noise that's transfered thru the case and can be noticeable on even the sturdiest of cases.

or you could WC it :D

did mine strictly for acoustics, i don't really OC much. they were 80GB WD, and they were screamers............. HDs are getting better about acoustics these days, i'm not as inclined to WC them as I once was.
