Hi everyone,

I'm trying to recover files from a hard drive with a corrupted version of xp home. It says windows did not shut down properly last time and gives me the 3 safe mode options, last config that worked, and start normally. If i go to safe mode, immediate blue screen and error code. If i go to last config that worked it shows the windows icon, then the time bar freezes and goes to blue screen.

I need to recover important document files for my friends father asap, so i was looking into hard drive enclosures, but am fairly unsure if it will work the way i am planning.

would the enclosure be a way to pull the files off the drive? I don't mind wiping it and re-installing windows, but i need these files. thanks.
 
If you have another computer, hook it up and see if you can transfer them to another HD.

For future reference, backups!
 
Slide it in another computer and "pull" the files off and secure to a flash drive. reformat and reinstall after putting the harddrive in the original computer.

you can take hard drive out plug device in above then to usb to computer and starting trasnfering files.
 
is there no open sata/ide port on your current comp to just plug it in directly?
 
well, this computer is in a different house, but yes i could just bring one of my computers over to his house, plug, and drag. thanks again everyone!
 
ok, well i used an enclosure and my tower, both occasions the drive showed up in my computer, but when i tried to access it i recieve an error saying the drive was corrupted or unreadable. So am i out of options? or is there still something that could pull the files. thanks again
 
would i be able to run getdataback if the hard drive is in a hard drive enclosure and connected through the usb, or do i have to take it out and attach it directly to the motherboard of my functioning computer?
 
I can't remember, and I'm too lazy to look it up, sorry. Google for the program and check the website. IIRC, I was able to do it via my USB enclosure, but this was a while ago, and my memory isn't the greatest.
 
ok getdataback worked great, just letting everyone know.

However, im having another issue, i want to reformat their drive, so i brought the operating system disc for xp home(gateway), it loaded up on their computer..but they didnt have any ps2 ports...it was all usb..so i wasnt able to navigate through the screen...soo i take the hard drive to my house to run the cd, pop in their hard drive...and set my bios to boot from cd...and...none of my computers will boot from the cd(4 motherboards).

so..
1)why is the cd not running/booting/repairing in my computers, but it is in theirs?
2) is there any way that i can navigate through the menu on their computer if they don't have ps2 ports?

1. If it's a Gateway branded install CD, it probably has to "see" a Gateway machine.

2. There's gotta be a way to get to the BIOS with USB if there's no ps2 ports.
 
it was actually working with a dell...but that's the issue, for whatever reason im getting no signal from the usb ports(with the usb keyboard and mouse) once it goes into the install screen. so i can click ok, advance a screen, etc.

Are you calling the install screen the BIOS?

What I'm trying to say is many of the XP private label disks (Dell, Gateway) won't boot unless they see a branded (Dell, Gateway) motherboard. Maybe that's why it won't boot on your home-builts?

You may need to get into the BIOS and tell the computer to use the USB ports?
