Hard Drive Crusher

At my work we use a degausser followed by a sledge hammer to dispose of hard drives. There’s nothing like taking your aggressions out on a few hard drives on a Friday afternoon. :)
 
I don't see the point of this machine. I see industrial shredders as still being the easier and better option... and you dont need to own it, you simply pack the drives in a box, go a place that charges you a fee, dump the entire box and drives in.
 
After watching the "shoot the damn thing" pic I realized I can take a bunch of HDs and do a bullet proof vest.

I can't think of a single security issue with letting an employee transport a box of your company's IP to a third-party.
 
And the good news is it's only $11,500 plus another $895 for the optional hand pump activated manual backup. Perfect for the everyday home consumer. Can't wait to rush out and by a couple of dozen. ;)

Now, back to earth...I'm thinking there are more fun and less expensive ways to accomplish the same results.
I kinda like the results after using a cutting torch. Something about seeing a hard drive turned to slag that feels so satisfying. lol.

Interesting comment. You are expecting that same employe to see through a manual destruction of drives :rolleyes:

Secondly, you have not heard of services that does these things (lots of companies offers data destruction, document destruction, etc). Obviously, you are still stuck with your head in the ground.

The small holes are 5.56x45mm M193 SS109 rounds fired from a Bushmaster XM15 E21S carbine. The large holes are .223 55gr. Remington JHP rounds fired from the same weapon.

This isn't the same gun, but it is similar in configuration to the Bushmaster I used. This is my newer Colt LE6920 carbine:

Any drive I need to destroy I just completely rip apart. Then I take the platters and grind them against my driveway pavement, or I'll take the steel plate and carve random lines into each platter on both sides.
 
better yet, here in town we have a place that wil slice it open like a can opener so you can get the magnets inside, then slice and dice it up for you for free as long as they get to keep the metal.
 
I use to have a home built furnace that I used to melt aluminium in. I remember one time I got it too hot and melted a hole in my steel crucible (I then went up to a much thicker steel, 1/4", to make my next cruicable out of.) I'm sure it would do nicely for removing data from hard drives. Probably do 10 or 20 in an hour, all for the cost of 20-40# of quality charcoal.
 
Why would you want to waste money on that!! is the data that much hidden on the drive...I usually just format the drive then give it to someoned else or throw it in the garbage.
 
black and decker corded drill is only $20
torx screwdriver is $2 and you get cool magnets and stuff.

I've got a number of other destructive weapons to use in my next outing. The I've got an AK-47 chambered in 7.62x39mm which will be more damaging. A jacketed hollow point 7.62x39mm round should do significant drive damage. I also have done the deed with .12GA slugs to some great effect, but I don't have any photos of that.

I've also never shot my Desert Eagle Mark XIX .50AE in any setting other than a indoor shooting range. So next time I go out and shoot stuff I'll bring that along. That's an extremely fun albiet expensive weapon to shoot.
 
I usually whip out the hex screwdrivers I got from the hardware store and go to work. Lot easier to break the disks than to break the casing+disk.

Thats awesome. Similar setup to my AR. Except I haven't mounted an EOTech. I am considering buying an Trijicon maybe this June. I've got some nice 75 gr Black Hills I wouldn't mind tearing through some hardware with. You're in Texas right? Hooray for us in the Southwest!

well, in both cases, the data could EASILY be recovered.......... a format doesn't even overwrite the disk, it just nukes the FAT............ I won't try and explain everything that could happen, i've provided an article instead:

Just use industrial shredding as somebody said. It will cost you a lot less and is very simple.
 
Degauss and a good ole shot (or tow or three...) of .50 cal. :D
 
Pshh, Ar15s, AK47s... Weak! Try that with my Mosin Nagant! 7.62x54R. After about 15 rounds at the range I'm ready to go home. You can't beat them for cheap fun. I payed 300 dollars for a 1941 SAKO with original stock. The receiver was made in 1897! It was captured by the Finns and refitted for high accuracy and recycled into the Finnish army. They don't make em like they used too.
 
I saw this on digg earlier... the funny thing is the CFO of my company asked me yesterday what is the best way to destroy a harddrive....

I sent him a link to this and told him to buy one, lol
 
+1 for shredding - one of my customers is in the defense industry, and that's how they dispose of old drives.
 
Ps. Dan's way looks like more fun - then shred what's left because the data density is so high on modern drives, you really need the pieces to be small ;)

Actually I can one up that. I've got a Remington 700 chambered in 7mm Magnum. That's a bit more powerful than 7.62x54mm rounds. That will be something I'll use quite a bit in my next outing.
 
Nice Dan, That is a beast. Expensive ammo though. I pay 7 dollars for 25 rounds. Military surplus. The bad part is the rounds are corrosive. I have to clean my barrel and bolt with window cleaner as soon as I get home. Ammonia stops the chemical reaction. I really want a SKS to hotrod. I can't hotrod the SAKO. That would be sacrilege. My next purchase will be a k-98 mouser. I love WWII guns. Just so happens the dealer down the street from me does too. LOL, The sign says Lock & Gun. There is not one lock in that place. :D

my .50 BMG, which is 12.7mm, is about $4 a round.
