I have looked at various HSF coolers and read different reviews on some of the top heatsink fans for LGA 775 cpu's.

The V8 block, the thermalright true 120, etc.

I was wondering, is there a definitive top performer? One that just shines above the others?
I want to ensure maximum cpu cooling on air to get the most stability out of my upcoming OC.

Whats the verdict?

I'm not sure why anyone would want the "best performing heatsink fan" that provides "maximum cpu cooling on air". But if that's what you really want just get the 4000RPM Delta or one of those 4000rpm Sunons or similar. Doesn't really matter which of these high powered fans you get, they're all fairly similar. Don't forget the earplugs.

(But really, if you want maximum CPU cooling, you should just forget air.)

Watercooling is a big hassle that many would just rather not have to deal with.
I make the time to maintain it, but I can see most people really wouldn't wanna waste any time on it. Plus it makes taking apart a PC to replace stuff a real pain in the ass.

Having said that, I'd never go back to air though ;)

To answer the OPs question, you just can't go wrong with Thermalrite 120. It's performance is simply a factor of how much fan noise you're willing to accept.

No water cooling for me, ever. Only keep my cpu for about a year or so, then get another, better one. No heat issue that will damage my CPU nor O/Cing to 3.8ghz to justify the expense of water.

The near silence with killer performance is what keeps me watercooling. With a large radiator you can run the fans really quietly and still have it perform exceptionally well.

The 22"x17" Car Radiator I got from a scrapyard was the best £10 I ever spent.
