No, you can't download it and try it yet. But Handbrake is incorporating AMD VCE support into their software. AMD of course jumped the gun a bit and posted a video of the speed difference. Which is at least fun to discuss. Handbrake already has OPENCL support, but of course AMD VCE would be faster for AMD users than generic OPENCL. Polaris series of GPUs will have 4K H.265 VCE support. So this will get even better in the future.

Funny. They could have ended the video after 5-6 sec but waited that extra 15 to show the difference.
 
Does anybody have any experience with these GPU-accelerated (re-)encoding methods? Are they just as good (quality wise) as running on the CPU? I remember that was a concern early on.
 
After the less-than-worth-it OpenCL versions of Handbrake, looks like AMD got it right with VCE! Looking forward to this, this time it looking like it's working pretty well.
 
IIRC, OpenCL for HB/264 only applies to lookahead and adds at best 10-20% perf and sometimes has up to a 10% perf decrease. In my experience, GPGPU/VCE/NVGPU/IntelSync all sacrificed quality for speed and you will always get better quality (though slower) with a CPU, but for quick transcoding (say for ipad/tablet etc) then yes they are good enough. Looking forward to .265 picking up momentum. Quality is fantastic for the minimal size (low bitrate) though the decoding requirements are a bit insane until at least MediaTek gets their SoCs out in the wild... if VP10 ever takes off (vp9 was actually VERY good), maybe this will offer an alternative to h265s licensing... (now I'm just rambling on.. soo)
If Quality/Archiving is important stick to CPU h264
If you want "quick and dirty" AMD/NV/Intel GPU Assisted is fine..

Can you post a link to actually show the quality difference. Do you need a high end 4K tv to see the difference. Im not saying i dont believe gpu encoding looks worse. I just for once would like to be able to see and decide what my own eyes see. If you happen to run across a video showing the quality difference post a link. If i cant see the difference...then the difference isn't there Maybe right? (i know this question is way off topic lol)

Actually if you look under nightly builds...nope not even then. Why they dont at least put it in nightly builds lol? cause time difference sounds awsome

Any hardware accelerated video converter produces significantly less quality than software encoding (At the same bit rate, quantizer, etc...).

I also wouldn't trust AMD VCE as it has a pretty big issue that prevents processing 60FPS.

The best way is to play a game and try to record in x264 and AMD VCE at the same bit rate and you should see the difference clearly.

The reason why you want to do that is because Youtube and other video hosting sites re-encode and compresses the video.

Probably shouldn't mix the old gpu low quality conversions nvidia started that everyone disliked, or the recordings designed for streaming at a max bitrate of 3500 for streaming with the quality HandBrake achieves.
 
When I set my OBS to 50,000 bit rate, AMD VCE looks great. Of course streaming at 3,500 leaves much to be desired. You need to set it to 4,000 or 4,500 to look comparable to 3,500 CPU. I'm holding out for Polaris new encoding engine personally.
