I played Far Cry, then Doom 3, and now HL2. Zero hype for FC, serious hype for D3, and sh1tloads of hype for HL2. All to be expected, considering their respective histories.

Far Cry blew me away, bad story (arguable) or not. Doom 3 scared me sh1tless but left me disappointed. HL2 was nice, but that was it.

So the question is, which one did you really enjoy the most, given the beauty of hindsight?

Having read all the "Whoo - Can't wait" threads deteriorating into the "nice but sh1t" threads into the "don't waste my time anymore" threads, I replayed all 3.

I'd have to say Far Cry was the coolest. Let's be honest, it's the eye candy and gameplay which plays a big role in FPS, with the story not as big. Otherwise we'd all still be playing HL1.

After FC, the forums was full of "How to get my PC to play FC in kick-ass mode". I didn't see to many "Let's review the bad points of the game" threads.

We all know what happened after especially D3 and HL2.

FC was fukcing spectacular. Great weapons, beautiful scenery, drivable vehicles. D3 just looked really good, although limited to small spaces - nice engine + lighting. HL2 had the physics and mystique factor.

Which do you prefer?

You know - I didn't like D3 after I finished it. Guess I was disappointed a bit. But after replaying it again after all the others. I noticed how good the engine actually is. Runs great, never gave me any trouble. The story wasn't too shabby either, but it just didn't do it for me. Can't wait for other games based on the ID engine though.

The HL2 engine is very nice, and the FC one great, but you need a P7 to really appreciate FC, along with a Geforce 8800 Ultra ;)

D3 looks really nice, wonder how outside spaces will be done. It just pisses me off that hype is the sole motivator in rating games these days. Since games have become so fukcing big business, you see comparable games as Batman Forever movies which just runs on the hype and actually blows goat turds.

I hear good things about Riddick - escape from butcher bay. Any comparisons to the 3 big ones?

Riddick is good but the ride is over way too fast (though I'll say that it would beat HL2 in my book).

I prefer:

1. Doom 3
2. Far Cry
3. Half Life 2

...in that order.

Far Cry probably would have come out on top but, for some reason, the whole trigen business really messed it up for me.

Haa-haa. :D

Yeah, I know what you mean. Trigens. Gotta love them.....

It's like those really cheap ass action movies you get very late at night on the corny channels.

They should have rather gone with mutated buxom beaties who develop excessively large breasts. Imagine what that would look like on the FC engine. Maybe work in some close encounters... :D

At least they don't jump out of the closet when you pick up armor... ;)

They should make a game with mutated honies in them, maybe Duke Nukem Forever will have something like that. At least it's interesting, and that's what gaming should be about.

HL2
Far Cry
Doom 3

I didn't like Far Cry or Doom 3 very much at all. I'm only giving Far Cry second place because of the 1km view distance. Far Cry could have been great without the lame AI and Tridgens.

FarCry
Half-Life2
Doom3

FarCry actually kept me engaged enough to finish it. I even went through a second time and tried different things.

Half-Life 2 was disappointing comparing it to the first. I finally finished it but I had to force myself to that point.

Doom 3 I didnt even finish because I just got too bored with it. Maybe one day I will finish it of but right now there are beter things to do.

I love Half-Life 2. It is one fantastic game. I never finished Doom 3, but it was never my thing. Far Cry is really fun, but I actually got bored with going through jungle, going in the mountain, then repeat. I don't know, something with that felt a little off, imo. As much as I like HL 2, however, it is unstable on my system for some reason, and likes to randomly crash just as I am getting into it...no idea what is up with that

I havent played HL2 yet, but I have played Doom 3 and Far Cry. Ive finished Doom 3 and restarted it again, but I have not been compelled to finish Far Cry. The game is incredibly boring and the lack of a save feature adds to that as well. The weapons are mundane , and you only need 2 weapons to be effective. The human enemies are the same over and over again along with "ho-hum" objectives (cool looking demons are just funner to kill). The AI is either incredibly stupid or pyshic.BTW, how many head shots should I need to fire in order to kill a human soldier? The humans are as invulnerable as the trigens. Ive thrown grenades at human soldiers, and they would respond with an "uggghhhh". I was like .

Everytime I play Doom, though, it's thrilling. The atmosphere in that game is enthralling and tense. Doom's world seems to be alive too. Far Cry's World seems to be a painted canvas with a few brids, insects, and fish moving into view. The "aww" factor wears off quickly. In Doom some type of machinery is always moving.

This is a Far Cry !!!!!! message board, though, so I am sure people will disagree.

i like them all equally for different reasons, but if i had to pick which one i like the most, i would probably pick HL2, because of the really cool physics.

HL2.
Haven't bothered to finish either Far Cry or Doom3, I have to hand it to Far Cry tho. They came outta nowhere with this game compared to the other 2 hype machines.

Half Life 2
Doom 3

Didn't finish FarCry because after playing for a few hours, i hated it... Stupid boats blowing you from afar while you are struck with a tiny gun !

However, engine-wise, Doom3 is the best of all because it is running flawlessy with nice effects and lightning. Hope Quake 4 will use more of the new engine features, like the outdoors areas.

HL2
Doom 3

Never played Far Cry but I played the demo and I hated it, so I didn't buy the actual game. HL2 definitely beat Doom in my book though.

HL2
Farcry

Doom 3 is the worst game I've ever had the displesure of playing all the way through. It sucks hardcore ass.
Anyone remember "Rescue: The Embassy Mission" for the NES? Well, I had more fun with that than I did with Doom3.

And how many threads do we need about this? Maybe we should have one official poll and leave it at that.

Far Cry was good until the Trigens showed up. They were the worst-implemented monsters I've seen in a long time, and they looked like CRAP. Lame story, bad voice acting, cutscene videos that looked WORSE than the game (!!!), and a bit buggy.

Doom 3 had too little visual or gameplay variety. It looked great, sounded great, was very stable and genuinely scary at times.

Half-Life 2 was all-around good... lots of variety in things to look at and do, better story and voice acting than the other two, generally excellent visuals and sounds. But man, was it a buggy mess! Nobody in their right mind will use the Source engine instead of the Doom 3 engine going forward, simply because the D3 engine isn't a buggy mess and Source is.

Also, in the Source engine there are clipping problems from HELL and the light/shadows are weak as hell.

Oh boy, outdoor areas as an engine feature again... (slams head on table)
Anyway I place Doom3 on top then farcry and hl2 somewhere below that but not directly following. I know a guy that worked on farcry, but was still caught off guard from the great engine from nowhere. Im playing through Doom3 a second time and cant wait for the expansion with ctf. I played the halflife2 demo, had to go through the trouble of tricking the game into thinking my 5900ultra was a 9800pro, just to play a game with q3 style graphics.

My opinion:

Doom III (best engine, mundane story, classic action)
HL2 (close second, excellent technically, clever stuff done with story/physics gets points)
Far Cry (more distant 3rd, mundane story)

Any game that makes me jump in my seat wins :) HL2 was very good, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Far Cry didn't do too much for me. At first I thought it was my video card, so I held off on playing till I got my 6800GT. But even then, I just couldn't get into it like the other two. The HDR lighting is really neat though.

Story does make a difference in FPSs. It's just that we're so accustomed to awful stories (HL2, D3, FC, and more), that when a new FPS comes out that has an awful story it's just business as usual. It's really sad that companies are now taking an approach to game design that totally ignores storyline. I guess this can be OK if you have a WWII themed game as we all know the story behind that, but even then you can work on character development and creating a sense of accomplishment.

Personally, I think all three of the games are about equal. They're all good, but none of them really stand out as being excellent. All three have poor stories. Far Cry has AI that is better than the other two by quite a bit, but even then it has much room for improvement. D3 can render indoor scenes well and FC can render outdoor scenes well. HL2 is OK at both, but the engine is lacking crucial features such as dynamic lighting that will make it significantly less attractive to future developers. Physics is cool and HL2 had the best usage of it, but even then it wasn't that remarkable. FC probably had the most original level design. D3's maps are hallway to hallway with one room in between. HL2 is similar, but it added more rooms off the hallways and has multiple buildings. Doom 3 probably had the best atmosphere.

Also, another thing that I hate about what seems to be standard game design are difficulty levels. Rather than increasing the AI's difficulty, adding more challenges/puzzles, and maybe increase the number of enemies, developers simply increase the damage you take and/or reduce the damage you deal. That's really pathetic.

Trigens = "hah hah! look at that crappy looking, hokey, joke of a monster!!"

I woulda finished Far Cry if it weren't for a reformat. The thing I loved the most about Far Cry was getting up on a tower and being able to see for miles. Felt BIG.

HL2 had a lot of cool factor, but didn't really create much tension in some regards.

Doom3 actually was really sweet for the first 1/3 or so, (bathroom scene anyone?) and then the end also.

I don't know that I'd pick one over another, but Doom3 was the most visceral for me. Stuff was seriously trying to kill you and looked scary doing it. When I had to go onto the Martian surface, I was worried about running out of air, and it really seemed like the Martian surface. (yes I've been there...go there all the time.).

Hl2
Far Cry
Doom 3

HL2 was short, the story was weak, and steam sucks. But it was a fun game. Never had I said "That was cool!!" more times. No one can touch valve when it comes to immersion and environment.

Far Cry, pretty. Weak story, got way too hard at the end, but alot of fun. Good old-fashioned shooter. No hype, so nothing to fall short off.

Doom 3. Scary at first. Pretty at first. Got old fast. I kept saying to myself...is it over yet? walk down dark corridor, turn around to shoot at imp that came out of dark closet., repeat

I'm surprised how many people didn't pick HL2 as their first choice (or should I say I'm surprised how many people picked D3 - I thought I was the only one who liked that game)

I think it's hard to compare all three of the games because they're so different in terms of gameplay. Farcry seemed to have more of a stealth element to it (or maybe I just did more crawling through the jungle than most people). Doom 3 was more of a straightforward run and gun game (but not as fast-paced as something like Painkiller). HL2 was somewhere in between.

Things I did like:
Doom 3 had the best atmosphere of all the games, and there were some genuinely frightening moments when I was playing it with the lights off.
Half-Life 2 was the most exciting and cinematic. My favorite part was towards the end when you were in the middle of a revolution and had to take out all the striders.
Farcry had great AI. I found myself constantly reloading old saved games and trying areas in different ways just to see how the AI would react.

Things I didn't like:
Doom 3 did get repetitive after a while. I was asking myself, "Is it over yet?" after a while.
Half-Life 2 had that whole Steam thing that took me forever to get it working.
Farcry's AI was sometimes too good. There were some parts of the game that I got so frustrated that I had to resort to cheats just to play the game, and the fact that you can only save at certain points is unacceptable these days for PC games.

So I guess here's my ranking:
1. Half-Life 2 (best overall)
2. Painkiller (I know it wasn't on the list but it definitely should be)
3. Doom 3 / Farcry (I can't decide which one I liked better)

I've played Doom3 over and over, and i still get goosebumps (Must be the caffein). The game itself is kinda mundane, but everyone seems to be expecting great things from the engine :) Maybe i'll be able to play this at night now.

FarCry really is like an action movie. A cheap one, but still impressive. The levels are HUGE. You go through one facility, clear it, then go to the next one, clear it, then drive 5 miles to the next one, then clear it. Notice i'm saying facilities, NOT buildings!

Haven't played HL2 yet. I'm still debating if it's worth the risk of not running on my rig considering all the other cool games out there.

1. HL2
2. FarCry
3. Doom 3

I didn't think I would like HL2 with all of the steam crap that geets loaded, and I was let down by Doom 3 so I only picked up HL2 last week and it has been much more entertaining than Doom 3. FarCry was okay, I didn't finish it yet.

I am hoping that the Doom 3 expansion is an improvement.

As far as multiplayer, I wasn't impressed with either Doom 3 or HL2. I'm still playing Battlefield Vietnam.

I didn't get to play Farcy so my answer may not actually count, but I liked Doom 3 the most. I just love scary game though. HL2 was okay but I had too many system problems with the game to really enjoy it.. I still haven't even finished because the stuttering was so bad. Recently though, I started the game up to see the stuttering almost gone, but too bad the desire was. I never had really high expectations for either because it always ends up being a disappointment. I did, however, just finish up Thief 3 a little while ago, I must say, that the game is really fucking awesome.

1. Thief 3
2. Doom 3
-------------------
9. Half-Life 2?

1.) Doom 3
2.) Far Cry
3.) HL 2

I have to say that I liked all 3 games though, so its not like "hl2 suxx and Doom 3 rulez" situation. I just liked Doom 3, yes it scared the shit outta me. Far Cry was cool, I actually liked the trigens, it was just the stupid save system that pissed me off. HL2 was cool, but I think that going into the game I expected way to much out of it. PC Gamer really hyped the game in its review, and lets face it, while I don't think steam is bad, it's no where near as good as plying the game right after you install it off a cd, after HL2 I doubt I'll buy any game online to download and play any time soon.

I haven't played any of these games but I want to see if these games will be able to keep me hooked, unlike GTA San Andreas or GTA 3 or many other games I Played. Some games start out great but get so repetetive and boring that I just don't play them and switch to Multiplayer. I really want to play a great single player game, so I will be building a new computer in a few months and I will try to get one or two of these games for free, if not all three. :D

HL2
Far Cry
Doom 3

All were great games, in my opinion. Far Cry was insanely hard at the end.

Only finished HL2.

Doom 3 got boring.

I didn't like the aimming movements for farcry, it felt "weird".

I think all 3 games were very good, in their respective themes. They all did what they set out to do...

I think I like Doom better than the rest though, since it did offer a more immersive atmosphere than the rest.. sometimes it felt like you were stuck in that damn base..

don't get me wrong, HL2 is an awesome game, as was far cry, but I think D3 just had a better presentation..

hl2
Farcry
D3

Played doom3 first, scared me but that was about it and i wasn't enthused enough to play through the entire game.

Far cry i liked but didn't really have the time to finish it. Great game though.

ANd hl2 I'll beat eventually...probably at a slower pace now that school is starting, but I thoroughly enjoy it. :)

HL2 SPOILER ALERT>

I'm a Half Life 2 fan, but they really needed to make it a little more threatening. FOr example, in the beginning, when you get off the train and you can mess with the Combine guards, I think they should beat you to death if you mess with them too much. Or even on the first time. Perhaps they should have had a cut scene in which they actually DO beat some NPC to death. This would immediately make them seem completely scarey and diabolical. YOu would really have some fear of them from then on. As it is, you mess with them and run away without consequence. Makes them just seem like buffoons.

And like in Ravenholm. Eventually you figure out that the head crab zombie guys are just slow, lumbering idiots you can chop in half at your leisure. Doesn't really create tension.

Then, to have 2 superlong vehicle levels just kinda makes a FPS turn into an arcade game. I dug having the vehicles, but again, arcade = not really scary. The antlions however were worthy of fear.

Bottom line: if you're gonna have some menacing Big Brother type world, it better be menacing! Think of the 1984 movie. You disobey and you get tortured. Exposed to your worst fear.

HL2 coulda used a little Doom3 "boo" in it, let's face it.

Yea, I'm kinda hearing that.. At no time in the game did I ever go.. Oh shit, here it comes..

with Doom 3, that got said alot, and many more colorful metaphors that described my impending doom..

HL2 was easy.. the enemies, pussies.. Never did I feel threatened, or I was severely going to get my ass kicked... the only times I died, were when I did something stoopid, like shooting a rocket when i was too close to a wall.. or I fell off from something..

Even the striders gave me this pushover feel... at the end I was hoping to atleast see what a combine soldier looked like without the mask, but I was robbed there too.. Playing through the game, makes me wonder why Earth lost in the first place.. the combine were pussies, and were far from a decent adversary..

Now in doom 3, those were some kick ass monsters comming at my ass, that made the game hard at times.. having to take down revenants, and a few imp's with a pistol made for some tight, instense moments.. when a hell knight came down after you, you bet your ass you you were saying something along the lines of, Fuck... here it comes..

Half-Life 2
Far Cry
Doom 3

I liked all three. I've replayed all three. The one I enjoyed the most overall was Half-Life 2. Doom 3 I enjoyed the least. It was too much of the same. FarCry was good and all, but the overall story and frustration about the save games sucked. Also the Trijems sucked. Especially the monkey looking ones that remind me of those stupid fuzzy looking creatures from Serious Sam 2. The game engine was great but not perfect. Overall I think technically speaking Doom 3 was best. Then HL2 and FarCry last. Technical Innovation goes to Farcry for the 1.3 patch. HDR lighting and PS3.0 kick ass.

I can't list them in order. They're all excellent.

Although FarCry was excellent, it would have to go last on my list, if I had one. Too many low points for it to compete with Doom 3 and HL2.

Half-Life 2 had the best "realistic" feeling about it. You really felt you were inside the game, at these actual locations. Doom 3 had a better way of immersing you in it's atsmophere, so you block out most everything else around you, making it very easy to scare you.

All of their highs and lows, but I'd say Half-Life 2 managed to frustrate me the most, with the insane delays, and incredibly stupid Steam program. Take those two away though, and you have one bitchin game and an amazing engine.

Yup - looks like the feelings are the same, generally.

I would agree that the Doom 3 engine gave me the least troubles while still looking reallly cool. HL2 ran with lots of glitches and stutters, and Far Cry brought my PC to its knees.

When does Quake 4 release? The quake series was always cool with the nice "dark sci-fi" feel I like. If they can bring out a nice storyline with larger areas which doesn't kill your PC too much, then we might have a winner.
