My misguied friend bought a dell xps 200 expecting to be able to smack in a standard sized video card. unfortunately, it's a tiny case, containing a "half-height" pcix slot, and a pcix video slot. he's looking for a solution, and i have never dealt with such tomfoolery. any advice?

Uh... new case for 50?
I dont know off hand but i'll look about but i dont think your going to get anything serious in a half height format, the only other idea is one of those riser cards that changes a slot to a right angle.. but even then yhat would involve alot of cutting on the case and you'd loose alota other slots..

yes PCI E E E E not X :)

new case - likely wont fit a dell mobo.unless u custome make a bac plate and drill the holes to fasen it.

Wait- a gaming system that requires a half height video card?! Excuse me while I laugh.

Sigged, and why did Dell make the new XPS case so small? They used to be midtowers.

Newegg use to carry the Aopen 6600 which is the best thing you can find in low profile. I have no idea why they don't have it anymore, the card was quite popular with low profile HTPC builds and Newegg always sold out in a matter of a few days.

I would try emailing/checking Aopen's site for info on where you can buy the card and if you can buy it directly from them if you can't find it.

well if you took two seconds to look you would see that the xps200 is their compact pc. they still make the mid tower(xps 400). this xps200 used to be called 4600c.

When you say "half height" do you mean the connector size or the actual card size?

Tyt:-
I think its fairly safe to assume he's talking about half card height, i dont think they DO video cards with tiny PCI-e slots. Not enough bandwidth i imagine.

well if the are no other cards
Id mod the back panel and use a 1 or 2U PCI-E riser card with a full height vidcard
which of course would then be parallel to the mobo

Dude, It's a dell.

Therefore, there's nowhere near enough room for that.

It's not just the back panel, which is a really simple thing to accomodate. All Dell systems I've worked with have proprietary mobo main power connectors as well. You can mod that as well but some people might not be very comfortable with that. Some Dell systems do have standard main power connectors so you really have to look that up (which sometimes is annoying in itself).

This is why you build systems yourself instead of buying from a big company, because despite having hundreds of college degree toting professionals, your average teenager will build a superior computer.

I havent seen the guts, so its possible there isnt room for a riser + card
but more to the point there is an extremely limited selection of (2U?) cards for that slot
and just about anything you toss in there is going to tax the cooling solution,
so getting down to HTPC type modding, risercards and cooling isnt something Id immediately dismiss.

the alternative is to tell him he is SOL with only a handful of possible solutions,
here are a few

NVIDIA Quadro NVS 285
Powercolor X300 PCI-E LP

forget gaming cards and start looking at workstation cards for the rackmount that will do gaming
with of course the resultant premium price and upgrading that cooling solution as well

Dell hasnt had proprietary power for quite awhile now, but its worth verifying
