Hack the Planet

i know the official stance has to be "piracy is wrong" but get a few things right...

1. it's not STEALING...it's PIRACY...big difference (i'm not STEALING the IP for monetary gains...i'm using it for my own private use, which, is more attention the game would have gotten from me otherwise....EA is not losing money because i wouldn't blindly buy a game like this anyways)

 You've got to be shitting me. Do you know how stupid that sounds? By your justification, I can run into a store, take an Xbox off the shelf and run out, but be ok because it's for my own private use. Hell, I wasn't going to buy one, so Microsoft isn't losing any money.

Just because trying to blur a line makes you sleep better at night doesn't mean you're right. Think about the standard definition of a "pirate" before any of this crap came around. What did they do? Looted, stole, and other illegal activities. But you come along and now the definition of a pirate is different just because you say it is?

It's amazing how folks try to rationalize theft, piracy, stealing, copying, and anything else that even remotely falls under the umbrella of taking something you're not entitled to take or possess.

I would say it's sad to see people do such things, but... people are really fucking stupid so it's a given. Anything less would be a surprise, really.

The problem with boycotting the game over the copy protection is that EA will just say that the low sales were due to piracy.

It's an endless cycle of destruction.

Instead of DRM, why don't they just go back to the Star Control 2 method? Make people have to look up a random constellation every time they play hahaha.

1. it's not STEALING...it's PIRACY...big difference

Since you want to play with semantics, need I point out that piracy is the aquatic equivalent of robbery, while the term you're looking for is "copyright infringement?" The use of "piracy" is basically a propaganda effort to try and get more draconian copyright laws passed. Unfortunately, it has been more or less successful in all fronts, including getting people to adapt the lingo of their little campaign.

If you're going to play Grammar Nazi, get it right.

It's amazing how folks try to rationalize theft, piracy, stealing, copying, and anything else that even remotely falls under the umbrella of taking something you're not entitled to take or possess.

It's also amazing how many people are able to equate law and morality.

And even if you are somehow able to do that, it should be noted that many countries have much less restrictive copyright law than the US. In many of these countries people are entitled (legally and morally) to do things like acquire copyrighted works for personal use.

that Spore DRM thing just don't make sense to me. Unless they expect users to find the game so crappy that we just install it, play though once and shelve the game for good, it simply isn't pratical to limit a video game installation to 3 times, or any number of times for that matter.

And the developers have to suffer the consequences of such retarded moves by the publisher.

no the problem is people say they are going to boycott it and then pirate it..

and the rpoblem with that is EA/Publishers think..

well it was good enough for them to take the time to download and play it, if we just tighten the DRM then if they want to play it they have to buy it..

if your going to boycott it then that is great but that means not playing it at all.. Period.. Ever...

i suspect most people just jump on the DRM bashing bandwagon and then use that as an excuse to pirate it, not that it would have really effect them or that they really cared only that they cared not to pay to play..

lets face it, they watch the torrent trackers and the usenet groups and they get an idea for how many download it. Infact now i bet they get an even better idea who is pirating it for how many people try to "authenticate" a pirated version.. It isn't a case of them just blanket blaming piracy.

Where is a Gibson when you need one. Never gonna buy Spore and never gonna buy a DRM based game, simple no? Just like I said about shock jock Howard Stern, if you complain about his show, calling him up and curse him out about the horrible things your listening to, then your an idiot (thought he was funny). I don't like Nancy Grace, instead of talk about how much I don't like her show, I change the channel. There are a few simple steps we can take to stop things we don't like, don't listen to them, don't watch them and don't buy their DRM ridden shit.

lol, just ripping Hackers for my iPod, liked Jolie with the smaller tits in this movie.

lol, just ripping Hackers for my iPod, liked Jolie with the smaller tits in this movie.

It ain't about the tits, it's about the lips... ;)

As for morals, it seems that the majority of the planet that severely needs hacking doesn't have any. Go figure...

when did i say i was trying to make myself feel better...if you would have actually read the rest of my post besides the first line where i pointed out that piracy and stealing are two different things completely....because if you DID keep reading, you would have also noticed i could really give two shits what you, or others like you, think

and as far as running into a store and grabbing a 360 and using it for my personal use....yes there is a difference there....because that is a LOST SALE....that is a manufactured product from a manufacturing plant that had shipping charges and all the lot....copying a file from the internet that contains a game that I wouldn't have bought is NOT a lost sale

am i going to buy rockband 2 tomorrow? yes, would i buy it even if i could pirate it? yes....am i going to buy Fallout 3 for my pc on release day? yes...why? because these games DESERVE my money....

spore...a game i never played before...that had a hype machine behind it that is crazy....why the fuck would i drop $60 without trying it first? maybe you are easily parted with money....but sorry i am not....whether you believe it to be wrong or not...i really don't care

i was simply using the term Piracy to separate the common misnomer of Downloading = Stealing

i download movies, i go to the movies, and i have over 600 dvd's....

i download all the tv shows i can, yet i still pay over 80 bucks a month for digital cable with a HDTV package....

i download games and buy the ones i can play for longer than 30 mins without feeling nauseated by it

i download songs and buy the albums that i can find

Wow - Talk about a raging emo. If you actually had any reading comprehension or logic, you'd see that your so called difference between piracy and theft is complete bullshit. To be honest, I don't give a crap what you believe - I'm just calling a spade a spade.

Since the Xbox 360 is manufactured from a plant that makes it different than software that was developed in an office? Software not sold is also a lost sale. Using your retarded logic, Fallout 3 is a game you haven't played before either - why won't you steal that one too? In fact, run in the store when it releases, tell them it's ok to take the product since it's really just a bunch of files that can be downloaded from a torrent and that your theft isn't really theft at all.

Yeah that pissed me off too when I found out you can install that game a total of 3 times no matter what your circumstance is.

I seriously hope one day EA goes bankrupt.

I wont buy it because it has DRM. I already stated so when the issue first came up. I just simply wont play it. Period! You guys that are pirating it are just a waste of air. What you should do is boycott the shit altogether. That would at least send the message that this game is crap. Can you see the headlines. :Latest EA game is so bad pirates around the world wont even steal it: Hell I forced Walmart to take back an opened copy of KOTOR after it tried to install some crap other than a game. I simply told the manager I wanted an in store credit and I wasn't gonna leave until I got one. I am the owner of my machine and I must be aware of all the software that is installed on it and most importantly of that software's total functionality. Stop bitching about EA and just make them go away by not buying/useing any of their products. I tell you after wasting hard earned cash on BF2142 no EA game will ever be on my machine.

I can attest that this does indeed make EA lose my money as a legitimate consumer. While Spore doesn't interest me, Mass Effect did, and it had the same DRM scheme.

About 6 days ago, I was shopping around and I had: Gears of War, Crysis, Mass Effect, all Command and Conquer games (14 of them), Supreme Commander + expansion and Freelancer in my shopping carts on a few websites (at once). Then I decided to make a final check for reviews, and found out about Mass Effect's DRM scheme. I ended up buying all of these games except Mass Effect. I then also bought 4 more Nintendo DS games in the same week and Romance of the Three Kingdoms XI when it came out, so it's not like I didn't want to spend money on games.

So this isn't an excuse for piracy: It was in my shopping cart. I was going to pay for it. And the DRM alone convinced me not to touch it.

So Spore's DRM certainly does scare away legitimate, non-pirating users as well. And not only that: reading the reactions to Spore has made me educate myself a bit more on DRM and this has scared me away even more from games that use such technology.

Lots of really stupid posts in here so let me just say to anyone who actually wants to learn about this stuff you should get an economics text book and read the section on "price discrimination". That should help you understand the reasons behind piracy. And piracy of copyrighted materials is not theft, you are not charged with criminal theft because you pirated copyrighted materials (morons), if anything you are charged with criminal copyright infringement.

It's funny, I would think that the people who are so quick to jump to corporate America's defense would have been the better educated group. Your not, there is something wrong with all of your posts, but keep farting, 'cause it's a forum and we need someone to stink up the place.

My take on it... this is coming from someone who holds a B.S. In Economics from A&M - and can afford to buy the games

I was really looking forward to spore - I laid down the 10 bucks for the creature creator and enjoyed it, when the full game hit though I found out multiple reasons why i did NOT want to lay out money for it.

1 - I paid 10 dollars for the creature creator under the guise of that when I get ready to buy the full game I will get 10 dollars off. Seemed like a nice economic tradeoff, EA gets maybe a few extra hundred thousand dollars or so to add to its balance sheet and earn interest off for a few months for doing NOTHING. The creature creator was a part of the final game, and hence if I were to buy the full game I would be paying for it TWICE.

2 - Learning that the software phones home and only lets me install it on three computers? Fuck you EA. Like most people here I own multiple computers, my desktop and my laptop are my rigs, and i format my hard drives a LOT. Why should I Have to call and beg EA to unlock my legitimate copy every few months if I want to be able to enjoy a game I paid for at home or on the road?

So in the end they wanted me to pay 60 dollars for something that (while new and awesome) still sucks at the same time. Yes I have played spore and you know what? I really am glad I didn't spend 60 dollars on it. It was cute for a few hours, but then got boring.

It doesnt matter what software company you are, or what software you are selling if you make it hard for me to use something that I have laid out money for then where is my incentive to buy it? I have NO problem paying for my software when it's worth it. After college and getting a real job, 50 dollars really isn't THAT big of a deal in the grand scheme of my finances, it's the principal of the matter though.

If all of these companies are subscribing to the "you arent buying the game you are renting it from us" then charge us 5 or 10 dollars a month, and stop putting up all these hurdles for the people that are giving you money.

It's my firm belief that no matter what form of copy protection is invented, it WILL be cracked... plain and simple. At the end of the day EA fucked up - and while they got $10 from me, I'm keeping the other part i would have HAPPILY given them if they didn't put all these dumb restrictions on it.

I was kind of interested in the game until I looked at the gameplay videos, now I have completly lost interest. The creature creator was great, but I doubt the game has much replayability. And putting DRM on a game will only make it get cracked even faster because you will attract all of the top groups that know how to crack properly.

Ahem... don't forget, if you swap out a video card or something, the computer sees that as a "new computer" :)

I'm downloading it without any intent to ever play it. My system (7200gs) can't handle it anyway. I can give a few gigs of download bandwidth for the "cause" I guess.

I was running the creature creator on my laptop in my sig, and was getting about 30fps, so i thing your 7200gs can play it alot better. But I was playing it at 800x600 but when i upped the settings it didn't look any better.

If you want to play the game then it has value, fucking buy it.

If your problem with the game is DRM then you have two options:

1) Don't buy and Don't play the game. (AKA voting with your wallet)

2) Buy a legit copy of the game, then download the DRM free torrent version.

DRM sucks ass, and it only hurts legit customers, but two wrongs do not make a right. And using the anti-DRM argument to pirate a game is a bullshit excuse to make yourself feel better. If you are going to steal, at least man up and accept that you are a dirty fucking thief and accept you are only doing it for your own interests.

PCs are faster/better than consoles, but generally speaking, better games come out for the consoles because of rampant piracy from PC users. Keep stealing them games and eventaully there will only be shitty games to steal.
Could not have said it any better.

1) Don't buy and Don't play the game. (AKA voting with your wallet)

Which is exactly what I am doing.

2. The DRM is horrible. That's why I switched over to the XBOX 360, now they get all of my money. PC Gaming used to be my favorite, but $2,000 to upgrade every 6-8 months and now the PC Section is growing bare. Why not pay $350 for a console and 60 dollar for a game, that I know i can put in my system and play without the "authentication" servers going down? Or the publishing company shutting downt heir servers?

The DRM infestation has been driving me away from PC games for a while now. I'm finally done. I'm tired of dropping $2k/year on upgrading my desktop, and for what? To play some new game that is only going to hassle me after I upgrade in less than a year? Hell, that is the reason why, even though I have multiple legit XP Pro and XP Home COAs, I run an Academic copy of XP Pro. I don't have to deal with that activation bullshit. I haven't upgraded my desktop since November 2006, I'm not planning on upgrading before 2010. I used to upgrade parts every few months, but now, screw it.

Now, I play games almost exclusively on my 360. Even FPS games. I'm not nearly as good with the controller as I am with a KB/M. However, it is a blast playing with all my real life friends, something I never had with PC gaming. Over the past year, for the PC I have bought 3-4 titles, all on Steam. Over the past 18 months, I have bought 20 titles for my 360. While the 360 has DRM, it stays the fuck out of the paying customers way. PC gaming is dying, and its the developers fault.

, I'm not planning on upgrading before 2010. I used to upgrade parts every few months, but now, screw it.
.
That looks more or less like my upgrade schedule, and I don't even get close to $2k ever 4 years much less every year. I'd blame that on you falling for all the hype of what's good and new, hell this whole site is dedicated to obnoxiously expensive hardware gizmos :D

Now all the news stories aside, yeah the DRM is crap the way they implimented, I don't give a fuck if that's what iTunes does. That in no way is a reason to pirate the game however, since you can still buy the game and install a crack so you don't have to deal with all that installation/activation crap. But I don't buy this whole people are downloading it because the DRM, they're downloading it because this one of the most hyped PC games in a long time, this game was being pushed down our throats three ways to Sunday, so guess what a lot more people get curious and want to play it, the off shoot of that is quite a few more people will pirate the game as well. Now those who pirate most likely aren't going to buy anyways, and the fact that the game blows chunks as far as how good it is those who did pirate probably are happy they didn't pay for it, which EA doesn't care about making customers happy they want customer's money.

If you dont want the game because of DRM, dont buy it, and tell EA why. But to say you're not going to buy it, then download a hacked/pirated version, you're a thief, period. Try to justify it all you want, you're taking something that doesn't belong to you without financial compensation. Putting yourself on a pedestal because your "sticking it to the man" is retarded.

I still think there's plenty of good games for the PC, and I subscribe to the "buy then download" method. They get my money, and I don't get the DRM. I didn't "steal" (piracy is not theft, it's copyright infringement; theft requires the loss of a physical item which simply copying bits does not do, but I digress) it since I bought it, and I don't have to worry about the DRM. I don't have a 360, probably won't for awhile longer, so maybe my view is a little skewed, but still that's my opinion.

Though, truthfully, I only play a couple games. The rig I'm building in December/January will be built for three games: Oblivion (+ TESCS, got lots of mod ideas!), Unreal Tournament 3, and Diablo 3 (when it's released).

"I made it about half way through the first land-creature phase and got bored. Just another shiny toy that loses it's entertainment value after half an hour." -Nemesis999

Wow, only gave it a whole 30 minutes and reviewed the whole game? Phases 3-5 are progressively more interesting than the last (and more complicated). And if you only played 30 minutes, the first phase takes nearly that long, so you gave the 2nd phase like 10 seconds? Yeah, that's fair. Don't cry because you didn't realize what kind of game it was before you tried it. Did you even buy your copy? Just curious.

"So Spore's DRM certainly does scare away legitimate, non-pirating users as well." -PRINCESS_FLUFF!

Spore has DRM? Unless someone told me I wouldn't have noticed. I just put in my CD-key and made an EA account.. that's it! Why are people complaining so much about something so simple and easy?

Also, read this: http://www.gamingsteve.com/archives/2008/05/maxis-responds-to-the-spore-drm-controversy.php

"This game may not sell well not because it was pirated, but because it sucks..." -RyanLucier

If the game truely sucks, why would people waste their time downloading it?

"pirating is not stealing, i would never pay for anything I pirate, no money has been lost, no damage done" -myndcrime

The point of making games is to turn a profit. If you're unwilling to pay for your entertainment you don't get to have it. Entertianment is not a birthright, you can live without it.

"According to Canadian law duplication of information for personal use is not only NOT theft, it's perfectly legal as ruled by the Supreme court. Did I download Spore? Yup, it's my right under Canadian law and I will most certainly exercise it." -Nemesis999

I'm sure it's duplication of information that you own or have (purchased/given) a license to. Not just any information. Under that mindset, you could duplicate peoples CreditCard numbers and other vital/sensitive information for "personal use".

At least someone understands how the market works.

"Learning that the software phones home and only lets me install it on three computers?" -collegeboy69us

Just like most pay-for software, it's meant only to go on to one computer and only have one user. The fact it's 3 is pretty lax if you ask me.

I don't really care to pirate any software. The reason is that I want the Developers to be rewarded for their efforts. But when I discover that a publisher, like EA, has implemented a copy protection scheme that limits the number of installations. That doesn't work for me.

There are two many instances where things can hose your Operating system, or some portion thereof, making in necessary to reinstall the OS. This re-installation process is a huge pain in the arse, and I avoid it like the plague. So why would I buy ANY software that punishes me, for some unwanted and unexpected event of this nature?

Then there are the cases where DRM seems to have a propensity for creating conflicts with other software. A case in point might be the issue where Nvidia Network Manager software renders Media Player 10 completely inoperable. In which case, just removing the offending software does not always restore functionality. So How am I to know that installing this game won't have negative effects on my system?

Now I can understand the publisher's desire to limit piracy. But this particular implementation is NOT a good solution. And as a consumer I have no choice but to "punish" EA by not buying their software.

I wonder how many people actually 'pirate' software as opposed to downloading to circumvent DRM (after buying the game). After all, is it really considered piracy when you merely download the 'media' and you really paid for a license to use the software?

On a $5 pack of 25 dvd-r's there isn't much tax, even if the blank cd tax was like $2, who cares your still getting 25 dvd-r's for cheap.

That is cheap, if you consider paying roughly 10x more than you could buy Yudens for online cheap.

The problem with boycotting the game over the copy protection is that EA will just say that the low sales were due to piracy.

It's an endless cycle of destruction.

They can only make that claim if people actually pirate the game.

Theres no blurred line. I'm pretty sure that stealing a physical object is different from making a copy of something that can be infinitely copied without degrading. Theres the rub.

This wasnt as big of an issue when things were copied in libraries because those works were usualy for educational purposes and produced dividends in the form of populace education... in addition to their substandard copy that was neither appealing nor feasible to re-distribute. Less the book itself was banned. There was no distinction made between cpying books for business, pleasure, or knowledge.

The price of a book was also a substantialy smaller percentage of someoens weekly pay than is a video game. Though arguably, not a CD or DVD, unless you fall victim to the very rampant consumption encouraged by the RIAA and MPAA that can easily spiral into a financialy un-sustainable habit. I know I've seen this, and I know I've seen friends where the habit is sustainable, but their garage is lined with racks filled with degrading CDs, DVDs, and now BRs. In any case, its clearly arguable that RIAA and MPAA encourage these habits.

They dont differentiate between themselves as to what is 'good' or 'bad' ... they pay marketing to make up for it, and thusly encourage the rampant consumerism that leads to the waste. I have tons of CDs that I regretted buying soon after, and lots more that have only one song on them worth listening to. Yet I remember the marketing campaigns better than these titles.

The piracy movement is too convenient of a way to SCREEN the RIAA, MPAA and PC gaming industries.

The reason games sell better for consoles is because users have no way to SCREEN the games. A demo is as good as a movie preview, it may ruin the plot, show entirely every moment even worth watching the movie for, and totaly dissorient you as to the titles meaning... but I can safely say that TRUTH is not a goal.

I think its even safe to say that the industry uses song snippets, movie previews, and game demos as SMOKE SCREENS.

I'm not fond of feeling ripped off, dissapointed, or coerced, and I thoroughly support piracy as but a means of SCREENING.

I'd also like to throw out the "its why they dont make games for PCs anymore" argument. Its a lot more fiscaly feasible to make a game compatible with a single computer (console) vs the infinite number of combinations of new and aging hardware, to hit the right population denomination spectrum and maximise profit.

Add to that the reduced ability to filter through the Marketing Smoke Screen for Console titles, and you got yourself a winning combination. Just not winning for the consumer.

Its more than arguable that beyond being more advanced, PC titles have a much shorter record of "trash game" reseases than do consoles, and for this reason, I'm more than thankful to piracy.

So, sue me for screening what I chose to consume. Are we suppose to exempt THIS industry from false marketing just because our physical well-being is not jeapordised as in other industries?

I've grown intelligent over games and marketing campaigns from the years I've been around and I dont bother to get a title I anticipate to dissapoint either paid for or not. So when I do get something, is safe to say, I buy 95% of what I chose to download first. I'm pretty discriminate.
