I think that its wonderful that so many of us choose to participate in different projects. I know that we fold under the same team number and name, but I think that whatever we choose is fine as long as we're contributing to the science, and increasing the potential for cures or solutions to what ever we make our goals.

The primary focus of the [H]orde has always been the F@H project since the G@H project was completed. I don't believe that we should be limited to focusing on one effort though. Better to know a little about a lot of things instead of being a master of one, has always been my opinion.

I think we should limit our focus on a smaller number of DC Projects

Its great that we are involved in so many projects, but i do think that it spreads us out a little more than we should be and if we were to focus on certain projects could become serious contenders in those just as we are in F@H.

I run both F@H and I run Collatz(BOINC) on my GPUs.

I think if we focused on F@H, WCG, and maybe one other it would be awesome.

with the wide variety of hardware all of us are running and the fact that some hardware runs better on boinc and some run better on F@H i think its a good thing we are spread over multiple DC projects.. for me its about the science and its the only reason i still have my 2 old ass laptops running boinc projects.. neither of them could run F@H..

I think it's great to participate in multiple DC projects, but F@H should be the main focus. Basically, we've got the DC commandos who go around and participate in all kinds of different projects, but the stickies should be kept to F@H. I think it would be impractical to try and provide guides and support for many different projects; it's just too hard to maintain something like that.

well i would love to running folding @ home on gpu but standford keeps slacking off so it neither efficient or get lots ppd. so until they do will run alternative projects. when they start with proper ati client i would start F@H the majority of the time

You can still get a good 4500-5000PPD out of your card. It may not be as much as nVidia cards get, but that is still a very decent amount of points. Add in an SMP client running on your CPU and you could easily break 10k PPD with the system in your signature.

Disclaimer: As a [H]ard Commando, I might be a bit biased! :D

I started as only running F@H, but after a while became extremely disillusioned with the SMP client, I started running WCG. After finding BOINC, I just ran WCG on CPU and F@H on GPU for quite a while. Then I found all the other projects, the Commandos were born, and the rest is history!

That said, my two nVidia cards only run F@H, and will continue to only run F@H until the day they die or become obsolete at folding. The rest of my systems, however, are free to do whatever whim hits me. I love the fact that I can be part of the #1 folding team in the world as a part of our "official" project, and think that remaining #1 should still be our main focus (and corporate buy-out teams don't count in my book), but we should continue to encourage members who have interests in other science projects to feel free to explore them without feeling like they are betraying team 33.

Now, if I start to slip off the front page, I might have to add more "D", but as long as I can stay top 200, I'm cool for now!

I say that we stick with folding officially. It is why I got so interested into DC stuff, and we know that it is for a very good cause. Folding is all I will ever get into until the project is actually completed one day. I would hope to God that if someone I loved fell victim to a disease like Alzheimers, that there would be something that can be done one day that could slow, or reverse the debilitating effects. Unofficially, we should keep to only one or maybe two other noble projects for those who wish to expand into other DC projects, as we should do what we can to make sure everything is a team effort.

This is a tough pole.

I think we should defenitly keep with what we are doing, but reinforce and refocus on them first.
If one project ends, we find a new one, but should keep it so we can finish each project faster.

well I went to WCG after I decided to leave F@H but the team needs help so I am back to F@H for now

personally I have a lot of issues with the way F@H is handled and the whole F@H community (outside of the [H] obviously) which is why I left in the first place...

I think people who are only focusing on FAH are forgetting what this is all about.

FOR SCIENCE

Each project has it's own value and each person values each project very differently, depending on their life experiences and personality.

Me for example. I would love to see progress in FAH, WCG, Rosetta@home and I value those a lot, but I value Seti@home, Einstein@home, QMC@home and Milkyway@home more.

They say that you can tell a lot about a man by his shoes but I think you can learn a lot more about him by the distributed computing projects he participates in.

Diversity all the way. I don't why people would want everyone to focus on one project only accomplishes, other than having a very large e-peen to tote around. It would only attract one crowd of people, those interested in that certain project and detract all others.

Well I guess Im not exactly sure what I am voting for here. Evil a little context to your pole might be beneficial. ;) I guess Im just assuming you wanted to gauge the communities interest in other projects besides f@h?

As most of you probably know I am a big fan of the BOINC client. Standford should evaluate and take notes. :D Seriously though f@h brought me to this subforum (having been a long time [H] reader before even knowing was DC was), and I was an active participant for a long time. Then all of the issues with the various clients drove me to try WCG. WCG is a great project by the way. The WCG project runs on the BOINC client which also supports many of the other project that the Commandos run.

Just a couple other random points I want to point out that might add context here:
1. Even if all of the guys running BOINC switched over to f@h we wouldnt even put a dent in EVGA's PPD lead on the Horde (there just isnt that many of us).
2. Many people running BOINC on this forum are doing so because they dont have the time/have lost the ambition to "constantly manage" the f@h clients or have ATI hardware that is very efficient at certain BOINC projects.
3. The BOINC guys around here, I feel, try very hard not to actively recruit/convert f@h guys to other projects. Most of us have just stumbled into the forum and found the DC Vault post. I try to help with f@h questions where I can, but rarely if ever will you see me bad mouth f@h and recommend that someone install BOINC instead.

I think that the diversity around here is great. Its probably what has kept me here this long. I think that it just helps the reputation of the [H]orde when we are seen as active participants in all these other projects and ranked in the Top 10 in the DC Vault.

To each his own. I F@H only.

Not trying to question your opinion or start a flame war or anything here but I would just be interested in hearing peoples reasons for this line of thinking. What would be the advantages of outlawing other projects?

I dont think anyone is trying to outlaw other projects.

The thing is on the DC-Vault side we are spread pretty thin and should focus ourselves a bit and could compete at a higher level than we are now.

These are the projects that we have posted points for today:
  1. Collatz Conjecture
  2. DNETC@HOME
  3. MilkyWay@Home
  4. GPUGrid
  5. QMC@Home
  6. FreeHAL@Home
  7. Docking@Home
  8. Rosetta@Home
  9. NFS@Home
  10. QuantumFIRE Alpha
  11. Yoyo@Home
  12. World Community Grid
  13. Primegrid
  14. Poem@Home
  15. RNA World
  16. Ufluids@Home
  17. Leiden Classical

If we could focus on one at a time until we hit X milestone and then move to a different we could be much more competitive i think.
Of course we cant force everyone to switch.

To start off, I think some people are missing or misunderstanding a certain "bias" for certain DC projects around here. Since the beginning of the [H]orde, projects were run based on medical uses. F@H, G@H and UD were projects based on medical advancement. This has been the primary focus of the team since inception and provides a strong bias towards similar projects through inertia and through a lot of people with the same type of mindset. Because of this, you are not going to see very many people pushing for non-medical projects. For example, take a Mustang car forum. It's a forum based around people who have or like Mustangs and the bias is going to be towards Mustangs. While there are people in the forum who also like Camaros, do you see the main focus of the forum every turning towards Camaros? It's highly unlikely that would be the case.

It also works with regards to Stanford's projects. F@H1, G@H and F@H2 projects were the major projects started around here and while F@H1 and G@H are finished, F@H2 is still around. There was a split for various reasons and a second project, UD, came into the picture until it ended. Again, this was a medical advancement project.

Unfortunately, after the end of the UD project, things didn't go too well. It was hoped WCG would be recognized as a secondary official [H] project but it wasn't done. The reason for this is because there were a number of people coming from UD who had stopped F@H for various reasons and were not interested in starting it back up again. There were others who were big in UD and didn't want to have the hassle of starting so low on the totem pole for F@H which I don't blame them for. This caused a large problem as the only major push was for F@H and we lost a lot of those people.

What this all boils down to is management of projects. F@H is and has always been big around here. There is a large push to increase production with F@H and we have many ways of doing that as well as a large core of people who continually add to the knowledge base to do it. There is no similar "unifying force" for other projects. Without some type of strong core management to push a project along, it usually doesn't grow very well. This is by no means the fault of the people who want said projects but the main reasons for this I do not wish to get into now.

Simply put, F@H has the best and most momentum, information and help on this forum. Because of that, it will continue to be the headline project no matter what for the foreseeable future.

All other projects are going to suffer because of this but also because of the number of different projects people are trying to push. I think I've seen 10-15 other projects being mentioned in this thread alone and that doesn't even come close to naming them all. However, as long as people are pushing for all of these different projects and trying to go in 10-20 different directions, you're not going to see a proper cohesion of the team. It does help to be a powerhouse as well as being able to swing around your e-pecker. That's one of the big ways to increase your numbers and attract other people to join you. That's one of the best ways to increase competition for the limited number of people out there.

Basically, a push for a single project other than F@H must be done before you can build larger or branch out from there. I think just about everyone is familiar with "a chicken with its head cut off". That's what I see with regards to other projects. I see no concentration on a single project to build it up for a time and increase the member base before jumping on another project and so on. It takes time to build up.

I don't personally have a problem with other projects and if people want to run them, that's great. However, you're not going to build up much of anything unless you concentrate and focus on one thing and I'm not talking about F@H.

I personally want to see the [H]orde competing on something along with F@H. I think it's extremely healthy for the team as a whole to have more than one "official" choice. My personal secondary choice is WCG and I ran almost all of my hardware on that for about a year. I stopped running F@H except for the GPU client on all my machines when I was 32nd on the team for F@H. That's not exactly an easy thing to do when you've invested as much time and hardware into F@H as I have over the many years.

I don't see a choice in the poll which properly expresses my thoughts but I believe the main focus should continue on F@H and the people not working on F@H should concentrate on a single project or two and become major contenders in the one or two projects rather than jumping from project to project. I'm not going to try and tell any of you which project to focus on but I think it's a choice you need to make in order to be relevant.

Yeah thats kind of what we thought too. ;)

It been working great actually. This month we have went from 188th in QMC to 93ish.

Right, ive seen those. I tihnk i even posted in the march one.

Anyways, i think we need to continue to do similar to that, but maybe not monthly based but milestone based. IE we want to jump X places Or have X # of points, or become #12 in rank, etc.

Not trying to question your opinion or start a flame war or anything here but I would just be interested in hearing peoples reasons for this line of thinking. What would be the advantages of outlawing other projects?
You must have misunderstood what I was stating. My view is I choose to F@H. What another chooses to do, is up to them.
I didn't even vote because I'm not going to try to force another to do as I do. ;)

Fair enough. Sorry I misunderstood. Thanks for expanding on your previous thought.

I'm running BOINC on a 920@3.9ghz:
WCG - Help Fight Childhood Cancer
WCG - Help Conquer Cancer
WCG - FightAIDS@Home
Aqua@home
Rosetta@Home

Really easy to set up, what's harder is finding out the daily performance.

EDIT: hmm I was under "[H]ardOCP" instead of "Hardocp" for wcg :p there's 3 hardocp teams!!

Oops! I've been under [H]ard|OCP too
I was wondering why there were only 5 members!
