so is it not obvious to anyone else that the backplate had to have been yanked off with the video cable and connector? srsly

yea, I noticed it, but also, have seen it myself.. so its not new to me. that customer brought in the pc, and the monitor (with part of the DB15 AND the I/O plate dangling from the cable).

I've always said that there should be some sort of IQ test for having kids and voting but I never thought one would need an IQ test in order to own a computer.

Just how hard would one have to yank in order to do that?

QFT :D

Wow I thought it only happened to me

I have a pc from a customer that has was dropped from a desk and the vga connector fell off

I'll take some pics and post

Add me to the list of people who have seen this. It was an old lady, too, and she claimed to have not noticed that the cable was screwed in. IIRC it broke off at the solder points on the motherboard. I installed a cheap PCI videocard (no AGP slot in POS Presario, and it was before PCIe).

If you work in a computer service shop that deals with the public, you see this fairly often.

I don't even think dell's "accidental damage" policy could be applied here... :D

I'm a Dell service provider. I do see this about every few months. And yes, Dell will cover this. I have called in about this exact issue. I have been told to replace the board anyway for "Customer Satisfaction".

Also, that appears to be a Dim4600. Those machine have an AGP slot. If you put in a video card, it will automatically disable the onboard video in the BIOS.

I almost want to try this to see how hard you would have to pull with the VGA screws locked in lol :D:cool:

yea me too..i know i have tripped over a screwed in dvi wire once and it stayed right there..just jerked the maching. lol big woman

well im no pc genius ,but by the looks, the atoms for the proton smasher turned to plasma and caused the nucleus to turn into a dwarf star :D:D:D

Something tells me that someone was MAD or a monitor dropped off whatever type of desk they had and ripped the port out.

nice one though.

I agree with the test IQ for having children

I don't agree on testing voters.. Since none of the asshats that have been voted in would pass an IQ test since Ronald Reagan

I think Bush would fail at tying his shoes let alone doing something right :p

I say dremel cut the rest of the mess off clean, and install a separate video card. If it works, consider it repaired and bill appropriately.

That's probably not included in warranty...not even extra protection plans...
if the mobo doesn't have VGA slot...oops...mobo upgrade, ram upgrade, cpu upgrade, snap!

As with most things, obviously a PEBUAK error. Or in this case, PEBUAV? Ah I miss telling a person that was what was wrong with their machine and them nodding in agreement. My best one though:
Customer: So what ended up being wrong with it?
Me: Well there were a few minor things I cleared up but mostly it seems to have been a PEBUAK error.
Customer: *nodding knowingly* Ah well as long as you fixed it that's great. Is there a patch for that out?
Me: Not yet, but I'm hoping one day there will be, right now the main fix is knowledge.
Customer: Oh ok, well I'll bring it back if it happens again then!

Either that our a good old id10t error. :p

Easier to do than people realise. I've seen serial and parallel plugs ripped off in a similar manner on systems built by people's "computer wizard kid" who didn't bother to do simple things like... install the IO shield... or DID bother to do things like screw everything in *as tightly as possible* to make it impossible to get anything off. People end up yanking on the cables in frustration in those cases or cracking the motherboards because of how tightly screwed into the cases they were. In one case, the serial port was ripped out by someone who didn't watch their step and tripped over the cable that was bridging two PC's (null modem for file transfer, man, those were the days)

Find yourself an older and newer motherboard and try wiggling on the integrated ports. The newer boards seem to be much more flexible compared to the older ones. Given this woman's case has 6 USB ports in the back, it can't be that old. Some budget motherboards seem to be getting thinner than laptop parts nowadays.

I totally understand how that can happen if the monitor falls or something... But yeah, the customer must have pulled pretty damn hard to do that. I admit that I treated my Dell pretty badly over the years.. My VGA port is actually loose, and the screws don't even go in anymore.. but it's still in one piece at least :D (I'm much smarter with my new system, don't worry).

I guess that [H] readers are not [H]ard enough if they need a cicle to spot the problem ;)

When I used to work at Geek Squad we had a lady bring in her computer one day, and it looked EXACTLY like this. The cause? They were allready having issues with the computer and her husband got so pissed off that he just yanked the cords off. Her hard drive ended up being fried from the short and she started balling her ass off in the middle of the store.

At a computer shop I worked at a guy called the BBB on us because his computer didn't work and blamed us.
What he did:
Bought a hd, wanted to extend the cable so he cut the hd cable in two and filled in the middle with duct tape in order to extend it. I kid you not. People are friggin idiots
