[H]ardfolding Council

Are the people in the [H]ardfolding Council still all active? If so, great. If not, let's make some changes if everybody is on board.

I personally have tried getting folks rallied together, not much came of the effort.

I'm new at all this, that's a given. Let's just keep things open and moving forward, all towards the end goal.

Actually the original council was setup by the old guard when the team was new.

Also relic will be returning, think of his absence as a vaction (he will not be removed for any reason, he has been a tremendous help to this team over the years), Killer, CT, and Majic are still here as well, they just tend to be quiet these days(battleworn).

As for contests that's really a tricky subject, from what I have read during the contests so far Kyle will not officially support them, nor can they officially be linked in any way to hardocp.com or hardforum.com, because of this and the fact that hardfolding.com runs on the [H] servers, I would have to say that the hardfolding.com can't officially be linked with it either.(Sorry but that's the way I have to look at it.) That would have to remain something that individule team members would have to keep going on their own.

All are active in one way or another. The council itself is not the point I don't think.

Guys, this is YOUR team, not my team, King's team, relic's team etc. Virtually every “team” decision has been made right here in these threads.

Debate of ideas is a good thing and should continue. They should continue in an intelligent manor is my only point. New ideas, contests etc. are all beneficial and in the end will grow our team, just as it should.

How do you guys feel about a/an "recruiter(s)"
Can do some cool banner/slogans for the hardfolding site
and for other official use...

I forgot about the contest thing .. so yea. that will stay on the DL for now :)

Well actually, I don't care what you post on the HardFolding site in terms of contests and recruiting. That site if yours to do with what you want. As long as the posting is on topic, I am all for it.

Also, let me say this. I think it is great that we have new folks on board as that is what is going to keep the [H]orde great. It is that simple. So I think it would behoove the DC team to figure out a way to let the newer members expresss their involvment and be active in the organization if they want to take that active part. Figuring out how to do that I think will be a huge benefit for the [H]orde as could act as a great motivator and rally point for the entire team, old and new.

Can we do things such as community purchases of systems/eBay deals and then split up the systems? One person collects the funds/bids and then ships the units out to others. Promote this at the hardfolding web site.

I know the line gets very grey between FS/FT Forum and this aspect.

It's not really a contest, and asking for donations is a no-no from previous posts.

On the surface that looks good, however, I see possible huge liability issues for Kyle and whoever is going to collect the money.

Just my immediate thoughts on that idea

Im here going strong and I still post on help topics and show up in IRC as often as I can. To this point I have recieved no PM's e-mails or general questions from anyone volunteering to help out in away. I know alot of stuff is going on and we are growing with alot of new ppl. I visit the forums everyday and read 98% of whats going on. I support all the new stuff and love seeing ppl take action. If anyone one of you want me to step down from the things I have done or still try to do in the background just let me know I will step. And take no [H]ard feelings with me.

[H]ard is where the [H]eart is!

That is up to you guys on purchasing systems. If you want to do group buys, more power to you.

No asking for donations, we are not a charity.

As for money aspects, you are totally on your own and at the mercy of the people you are dealing with. HardOCP will have nothing to do with that end of it.

So I would say these issues are once again up to yourselves to figure out. I would like that sort of business to go on hardfolding.com and not our forums.

How is anyone supposed to know who to ask? I think maybe the website is light when it comes to the basics of pulling folks together.

Here is a listing of the coucil.
http://www.hardfolding.com/index.php?go=27

It is somewhat buried on the menu, and there is not any contact addresses or links on the page.

I would also like to add that the HardFolding.com site looks absolutely great as well. I like what you have done with it King!

i don't think there is any reason for any council member to step down you guys earned your name on that page, however when i look at that page i dont know half the names so there is no way for me to know if when i am talking to ya... i know i see some of you guys on mirc and on the forums and that is great

i really think that what us n00bs are looking for is a way to help out, what you guys have setup and runing is great i understand i have no right to post news on [H]ardfolding or heck even write a guide, but i would like to see some links to the guides that others have written or to topics of intrust already posted here (it took me almost a month to know we had a chat channel and another 2 days to find it something like that could be linked on the page to the topic which is somewere here in the mess of things)

as far as group purchases i would be all about it... heck i would put the money upfront and buy if i had it

edit: thanks kyle and dr_k13

And such there seems to be such a big "grudge" between "older" folders and
the "younger" ones.. Don't you feel that as someone who has been there and
got the tshirt.. you could help us AND the team.. by sharing what has happened
and what works and does not work? instead of just slaming everything?

i dont believe that any such "grudge" exists, nor do i believe anyone is "slamming" ideas

the issue is that many times some new guy has suggested redoing everything in a drastic way with no plan on how to execute or support said changes ;)

(note that i am not sayin that is the case here... anyway i digress)

i think the people we have are doing a great job including King_N who has made just about everything on the new [h]folding site possible (or is it everything? i cant recall that far back lol)

anyway i think group buys and contests on hardfolding.com would be an excellent idea... we could organize the group buy and then have like an [h]folding store where you could pick up the items from the group buys... unless you want to collect money and then buy, but that can be tricky....

i offer no real ideas or suggestions becuase i just fold :)

Duster hey write news, do guides submit them to king bill me any one of us but please dont send your only copy just incase. And then give us a few to look it over and post. Please dont feel left out of the loop step in with both feet. All of us have full time lives and may miss something or just not have the time (at the time) to do it ourselves. But I cant promise it will get posted though. But if its sent to me I will promise to give it the time it deserves look it over and pass it up to king or back to you with suggestions or that at this time can cant find a way for it to fit.

Gawd you all are killing me today. Will be back soonish I have really real work i need to do so I can make sure i get a pay check this week.

A few great ways to ask would be read the stickies! See who some of the ppl are who are responisble for things. Its also listed on the hardfolding site as above. And hey look at the names fo the ops in th IRC chan great way to find ppl who might know. And hey you will see my name in every one of those areas. PM me, e-mail me, damn I think i even list a few of my IM user names in my profile.
Now Im not asking for a title here in the forums but hey that could help alittle too to let ppl see hey that guy that just posted might be able to help. I mean I have only be around here folding(Folding, UD, Genome, DF, Folding) since 2001. I take PM's alot with ppl who just have general question but dont want to post if fear of flames and not understanding what some ppl try to lay out for them.

Send me the [H]ard Love, I can take it!

I don't see any stickies on the website that we often point people to. I don't see it on the hardfolding site either. It may be there, but it is not easy to find....

I think that we lose a TON of new members because a lot of you have lost sight of what it is like to know NOTHING about DC.

If you think noobs are going to come in here and look for a title so they can go to your page on teh forum and find out how to PM you, well you are mistaken.

The index page on hardFolding.com should be dedicated to the person that knows nothing and getting that person geared up to come aboard. Just my 2 cents.....

I agree Kyle and I did just look at the stickies in the forums and there seems to be alot of stuff missing. At one time all that stuff was there. So I guess an admin must of felt is was not needed anymore. I will work on a new fact with some ppls names for help contact as such.

Anyone reading this thread wish to have their named added to my list shoot me a PM and I will ADD you to my list. May take me a few days to get everything the way I like it but I will work on it and pass it onto DR_K13.

Got a few other things i will tlk to king about for the site with some live type help.

I would like to make this suggestion: Mentors

We could have a process where a mentor is assigned to each new folder/UD'r that we can identify & contact. The mentor would be able to hold the hand of the new user until such time as the new folder gains enough confidence in the DC projects.

Like Kyle said, we have a ton of inactive folders. In business, they say it takes 7 times more money to attract new clients than it does to turn a customer into a repeat customer. Let's apply that principle to our existing base of non-active folders.

We have to flush this out further; as to qualifications for a mentor (if any), sign up process to be a mentor, how do we contact a new [H]ardfolder, case load of a mentor, etc.

Certainly I would like to be involved in such a project. What is the next step?

Ciao for now ......

Brilliant idea.. Gwilya. Sign me up for it. We could have an e-mail thing going where mentors would send a hello message and could exchange IM. We could expand this further and in essence have something like a fireteam when it comes around for gauntlets, maybe within the [H]orde itself.

GG that is sort of what I am looking at. But not to assign one to each person but more to have them advailable to those newer folks with questions. Much in the same way I havwe tried to run IRC over the amny years I have ran it.

One problem I already Know I will face with that is the simple fact 98% of the ppl never read stickes. Not just here but on forums i visit all through out the web. It is just like reading the EULA yeah we all know its there but come on who wants to read all the stuff just let me use the program already.

I would like to put together a small team. 5-10 ppl willing to fill out these duties. I cant promise a live help prompt but, I am working something as close as I can to it.

I Agree, We need " How-tos" on the hardfolding.com site. I have made some progress in the FAQ thread http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=759399 maybe King can link it for the noobs that have questions , I also made a webpage on installing , the link is in the FAQs

That thread you mentioned was easily the most single helpful thread in getting me (re) started with folding. Other things I personally think should be addressed either in the above thread or in any proposed howto/FAQ thread would be the 50% HT issue, how to embed switches into service based configs, etc...

The info is out there and available (if a doofus like me can figure it out, trust me its available), having the info easily available in a single thread or forum section would save everybody a lot of time so we have more free time to derail innocent threads :)

Majic's points on stickies is well taken, honestly I don't have a good way to address that other than public humiliation. Unfortunaly, not a good way to initiate newcomers.

Lastly, great to see the dialog, discussion IMO is never a bad thing.

I am still around, mostly in the IRC channel as CT. Like a lot of the old guard, real life has kept me from participating as much as I want. I need to spend more time in the forums and do some more borging.

I think we can take this and do a lot of good for the team. King needs a lot of help gathering news and with guides for n00bies and some of us old guys who have lost touch. Instead of fighting amongst ourselves, we need to take that energy and use it against the real enemies... cancer, alzheimers, and other nasty diseases.

I have seen a lot of good ideas in the thread and hope that we can put some of them to work and pull the team back together. Signing off now and hoping to see more people in the IRC channel. www.enterthegame.com #hardfolding.

I have taken up residence in the IRC channel, so you are obviously talking to the converted here!! And kudos to you for maintaining the channel!

But, I think it has way more impact if a new folder/UD'r were to receive a personalized email:

Hi [New-folder]!
My folding name is GwilyaGwees, and on behalf of the [H]orde, we welcome you to [F@H/UD]. I just want you to know that I am available to you to assist you in [folding/UD]. If you have any questions, please contact me.

I am available at: [email addy here]

or: IRC Channel at www.enterthegame.com and then /join #hardfolding

or: [alternate contact methods]

/end email
I hope you get my point. A personal welcome from someone who has the experience and knows how to guide a newbie.

There is absolutely no doubt about people not reading the stickies or doing their homework. Maybe your 98% is a bit low???

OK OK OK stop with the names here. I will do a post jsut on this subject. before the night ends. And will take names then. But if I keep posting in here about it I will never clear my thoughts and get anything done. Thanks Kyle. The impass we run into is this can't really be discussed over at hardfolding.com because the forums are here. No money talk in the forums here (which I totally understand) leaves us out in the dark.

OK, fair deal. Use this forum for whatever you want.

But my fear is that this forum should be secondary to getting together a solid website that a noobie can go to and figure the steps out he needs to take to fold for our team. Lots of people don't like reading forums as they don't know who is talking to them and they simply are not as credible to outsiders.

You can put a 1000 stickies at the top of this forum and it will mean shit compared to a single well crafted page of "How to Fold for the [H]orde," at HardFolding.com. Clear and concise is you best friend when it comes to bringing aboard new folders. I would suggest taking something like the thread mentioned above and putting it into text on the hardfolding site starting with STEP 1:.......

//OffTopic//

I just want to thank Kyle for helping us get our act together and pull together
some teamwork. :)

We owe you a beer.

Wow gone a day and look what goes on. Well I have wanted to do something to help out since the old borging isn't going so swell (No solaris or IRIX clients). Well I work in a related field. I don't actual work in protein folding but in Microbiology....but I benefit a lot from what the guys at Stanford do. As a benefit of my occupation I get access to a lot of early publications that could be of interest to the folding community. A lot of it is pretty technical but it is all interesting at least to me but maybe to others. Now i really don't want to over commit so I was thinking I could pass along maybe some of these articles that are a little more technical for those that might be interested. For instance this paper:

Protein folding stabilizing time measurement: a direct folding process and three-dimensional random walk simulation.

Chang CC, Lin PY, Yeh XC, Deng KH, Ho YP, Kan LS.

Department of Physics, National Dong Hwa University, Hualien 97401, Taiwan.
Biochem Biophys Res Commun. 2005 Mar 25;328(4):845-50.

Protein particles undergo Brownian motion and collisions in solution. The diffusive collisions may lead to aggregation. For proteins to fold successfully the process has to occur quickly and before significant collision takes place. The speed of protein folding was deduced by studying the correlation time of a lysozyme refolding process from autocorrelation function analysis of the mean collision time and aggregation/soluble ratio of protein. It is a measure of time before which an aggregate can be formed and also is the time measure for a protein to fold into a stable state. We report on the protein folding stabilizing time of a lysozyme system to be 25.5-27.5 micros (<+/-4%) between 295 and 279K via direct folding experimental studies, supported by a three-dimensional random walk simulation of diffusion-limited aggregation model. Aggregation is suppressed when the protein is folded to a stable form. Spontaneous folding and diffusion-limited aggregation are antagonistic in nature. Meanwhile, the resultant aggresome, suggested by Raman and mass spectroscopy, may be formed by cross-linkages of disulfide bonds and hydrophobic interactions.

or this:

Comprehensive analysis of protein folding activation thermodynamics reveals a universal behavior violated by kinetically stable proteases.

Jaswal SS, Truhlar SM, Dill KA, Agard DA.

Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics, Howard Hughes Medical Institute, University of California, San Francisco, San Francisco, CA 94143, USA.
J Mol Biol. 2005 Mar 25;347(2):355-66. Epub 2005 Jan 28.

Alpha-lytic protease (alpha LP) and Streptomyces griseus protease B (SGPB) are two extracellular serine proteases whose folding is absolutely dependent on the existence of their companion pro regions. Moreover, the native states of these proteins are, at best, marginally stable, with the apparent stability resulting from being kinetically trapped in the native state by large barriers to unfolding. Here, in an effort to understand the physical properties that distinguish kinetically and thermodynamically stable proteins, we study the temperature-dependences of the folding and unfolding kinetics of alpha LP and SGPB without their pro regions, and compare their behavior to a comprehensive set of other proteins. For the folding activation thermodynamics, we find some remarkable universal behaviors in the thermodynamically stable proteins that are violated dramatically by alpha LP. Despite significant variations in deltaC(P,F)++, the maximal folding speed occurs within the narrow biological temperature range for all proteins, except for alpha LP, with its maximal folding speed shifted lower by 200 K. This implies evolutionary pressures on folding speed for typical proteins, but not for alpha LP. In addition, the folding free energy barrier in the biological temperature range for most proteins is predominantly enthalpic, but purely entropic for alpha LP. The unfolding of alpha LP and SGPB is distinguished by three properties: a remarkably large deltaC(P,U)++, a very high deltaG(U)++, and a maximum deltaG(u)++ at the optimal growth temperature for the organism. While other proteins display each of these traits to some approximation, the simultaneous optimization of all three occurs only in the kinetically stable proteins, and appears to be required to maximize their unfolding cooperativity, by suppressing local unfolding events, and slowing the rate of global unfolding. Together, these properties extend the lifetime of these enzymes in the highly proteolytic extracellular environment. Attaining such functional properties seems possible only through the gross perturbation of the folding thermodynamics, which in turn has required the co-evolution of pro regions as folding catalysts.

This is just an example. But I could pull this kind of stuff along with the relevant links so people could follow them if you guys think it would be of interest. Just an idea.

i be away from comp all day tom prob... give me something noobish to help in if u want... even if it just checking what is already done to make sure the not so gifted can to it

They have a mentoring program at overclockers.com. Can't hurt to look at the what's and wherefores, take the best ideas and customize for the [H]orde. No sense reinventing the wheel. At least find out what not to do. I had to bring this up, lest someone believe it a new idea. Hate to see Arkaine drop by, and give us the "so you thought that up all by you're widdle selves". I'd prefer to be an admitted pirate. This is the [H]orde.

Does anyone still have the FAQ's and Guides I wrote, with the help of many in the IRC channel, sometime back?
I figure those were written in such a way that even a noob, like me, could understand a follow them. I understand that things have evolved since then and updates are necessary, but it could be of some help.. if anyone I sent it to still keeps it around on an old HDD.

Maybe King can set up a flow chart (since he knows the structure of the exisiting code)
of how we can set up the site to make it easier for noobs to get around?

Hopefully someone can find all those old FAQ"s Calavaro wrote to help us off to a good
jumpstart as well. It is good to see all this interest. As a team. We can do anything.

Today Protiens.....

Tomorrow... The world.

Edit: Just an idea... but maybe start at the very first page (default for hardfolding.com)
and have them see two links.. one to UD.. one to F@H.. and have a little summary
of each under, maybe the logo from each program... that is one thing that I see is it
gets confusing with so many numbers and statistics right off...
