Ok [H]orde. So whats the deal. Since I have been here I havent heard anything about
this Council, their activities... meeting... team planning.. anything.. I know we are doing
good, and will flog the auzzies..

We have been doing pretty good at bumping around in the dark, doing contests, trying to
get organized... case badges.. etc.. stealing threads.. causing mayhem... but isnt it time
we really get this show on the road?

Other then King_N and KillerMOB I havent seen any of the others around on mIRC or
the forums.. is it time we get a new Concil together?

And not to be rude.. but King_N you should be filling us in with what is going on with
the hardfolding.com.. let us have some input.. let us help you.. I know that there are
enough of us around to work on news and other items... remeber.. as you always say
this is a team, not a one man job..

Thus saying... lets get our acts together? Or does everyone like how we are just
kinda floating down the river?

GwilyaGewees would like it too :p

It's a nice thought and all, but I think the arguement can be made that we've already got the stickied show your boxen/farm thread. It does seem that the website could do with an update, at least to get new news up on to it.

how about magnusvir's fun folding fact of the week? I bet I could come up with something like I did last week. :D

I do have to admit I've been liking the additions that King has been making to the personal stat pages. The inclusion of the new badges, the little thumbnail to your current Stanford certificate and the such. It's really nice to have the one stop for all this info. Maybe the fun folding fact of the week could be a news item?

I'm getting a little sick of this.

I've been running hardfolding.com now for 5 years(yes 5 years) pretty much *mostly* on my own, I spend upwards around 60 hours a week working on the site(more then a full time job). for voluntary work, seriously getting tired of hearing how I do nothing.

When the server went down what did I get?

"When are you going to fix it, what could possibly be taking this long, I could have fixed it by now." etc (I have no *physical* access to the server itself, I couldn't have fixed it if I had wanted to) I sent in emails asking for it to be fixed beyond that it was completely out of my hands.

When people requested a news section I was against it(completely against it), because I knew that people would be screaming for news left and right. I went ahead and added it regardless under the strict condition that I was *not* going to be responsible for gathering news. I would like to mention that CIWS and relic have been very helpful in gathering it in recent times and I'm greatful for their assistance. If the team wants new news then the team members are going to have to gather it and send it to me (been that way for the last 5 years now).

As for the person that said we need a revamp, newsflash the site was completely revamped not more then 2 months ago, I'm not going to revamp the site every month, sorry.

People screamed they wanted stats, so I spent the next 3 months of my life creating a stats section(working around stanford's screwy stats *they fixed the issue now*) but what did the hard work bring, "oh the other team's stats are better", "hardfolding stats aren't accurate", "ouch the colors hurt my eyes".

Let me just say the other team's stats are no more accurate, they work on the same priciple they just display the stats in a different fashion, hardfolding also updates 8 times a day. Red and black are [H]'s colors, same as hardocp.com and hardforum.com, I'm not changing the team colors to white and blue or green and white..etc. Not to mention the small fact that I'm paying extra per month just to provide the stats to you, but oh well, who cares right?

As for links to computer rigs, we already have them, just no-one bothers to use it(been there for the past 5 years). http://www.hardfolding.com/index.php?go=29

As for what I've been doing, well let's see, I udated the entire site's code to be compatible with the new versions of php and mysql, completely revamped the site, add new members daily, check for new news if there is any(so far nothing), finished the long awaited forum badges, created F@H and UD milestone pages, fixed the login issues, updated the F@H individule member stats pages, and I'm also working on other changes in the background as well.

Before you ask, no I will not reveal to you what those changes are, why? because last time I let everyone know what I was working on they screamed bloody murder that it wasn't done, so now I reveal the new things when they are completed not before.

90% of what gets changed on the site is invisible to you as it deals with the internal php coding, only time people seem to notice what I do is when I change the look of the site.

I mean there have been 2 changes to the stats that were added over 48 hours ago, not a single person has noticed (Edit: P[H]antom noticed, thanks P[H]antom).

Needless to say I'm doing what I'm supposed to be doing, never stopped.

Sorry if this message is a little bitter, but I'm really getting tired of hearing that I'm spending 60+ hours a week doing nothing.

Sorry if this message is a little bitter, but I'm really getting tired of hearing that I'm spending 60+ hours a week doing nothing.

yes. you are bitter. so chill tf out.

what i was saying.. is that you dont have to do it on your own...
there are others here who want to HELP you. not BITCH at you

so calm down.. sit down... and instead of starting a flame war..
why dont you talk to us and work as a team...

1 [H]ard Team, 2 Great Projects, 1 Common Goal..... The Cure

1 Team.
1 Goal.

So why dont we act like a team?

dont get bent out of shape everytime someone mentions trying to make things better
for...

you guessed it.

THE TEAM.

And not to be rude.. but King_N you should be filling us in with what is going on with the hardfolding.com.. let us have some input.. let us help you.. I know that there are enough of us around to work on news and other items... remeber.. as you always say this is a team, not a one man job..

Where did i say you did nothing?

I didnt.

SO CHILL. god.

you say 60plus hours a week.

well thats good. but you dont have to do it on your own. you are choosing too.
it could be less "Work" if you let us help.

edit: I have nothing against you. no beef. I just want to see our team flog the... outa the OCAU.

Back to topic on hand after the major sidetrack..

What do people think about getting a new Council..
For the old timers... how did it happen the first time around...

what do we need to do... what is the protocol.. is there one?

So Kodiak, I know you haven't been around as long as some of us, but I do enjoy your enthusiasm and dedication to the project. On that note, I also admire and enjoy King_N's tireless and selfless dedication to the project.

Try looking at it from his perspective. King_N HAS been around the block a few times on our behalf and doesn't get NEAR enough credit for the kinds of things that he does for us on a daily basis. I honestly have no idea what it takes to do the kinds of things that King_N has mentioned here, but I do know what it is like to have your efforts taken for granted and questioned in the public eye. Maybe a better way to do this would have been to email King_N and ask if there was anything you could help with or bounce some ideas off of him instead of venting in the public forum here.

More importantly, it seems about every 6 months or so a new round of members comes through trying to "organize" and do better the things that he is doing for us. I am not saying that that is a bad thing, but you'll notice that after all that time he is still the one that is in charge of Hardfolding.com. And unfortunately many of those enthusiastic members aren't really around and all that active. I mean, even the mighty relic has had other things in his life intervene with his abilities to be here. Given those choices, I would prefer to let the tried and true method rule the day here. It is obvious that Kyle et.al feel the same way (when they have time).

If you can accept that, then the only other solution to be "1 TEAM, 1 GOAL" is to utilize the systems that are in place. King_N has told all of us exactly how to make sure that the site news is current and fresh. It is up to us to put our money where our collective mouths are and give him the opportunity to keep it updated.

Find some news? Email it to him. I bet it goes up.
Want a farm accounting? Take a few minutes (or hours for the really lucky ones) and fill out your profile.
Want to write a new how-to-borg-your-corporate-internet guide? There's room for that too.

We have bunches of this stuff completed already, and the resources and driving members to complete anything on your list. Much of it could be as simple as copy-paste into an email and send it off. The colors thing... well it IS hard to view at work unnoticed, but I can live with it as I am sure my choices would offend others too.

I am not entirely defending King_N either. I think his skin is a little thin on this stuff too. But I do understand why it is so. Just need to realize that he doesn't see it your way, much like you don't see it his.

Oh well, back to lurker mode....

<------ Thanks xENo!!

Not the first time this has been brought up... and I'm sure it will not be the last.

I still think that things has to be outlined from the top "management" and some people have to do it. The more the better.

Good luck with it.

I can understand how you feel KingN but Kodiak brought up a point that should be addressed. In his post I did not see he telling you were lazy, not working, or that your work for the team goes unappreciated. I think we all appreciate your time and effort(atleast I know that I do)

As far as the council, who other then you still contributes to the site?? If you are the ONLY person from the council that is working on the site mabye there needs to be some new/more council members to lighten your workload. From the sounds of your post you are the only person currently working on it. Kodiak was just asking just that. Are you the only person updating the website??

There are lots of people here that contribute their own personal time to help things get organized. They run contests, help find deals for farms, heck even host comps for people that can not. I am sure there are people here that have the knowledge to help you update and run the site.

This is a team effort, why not ask fellow team members if they would be intrested in helping work on the website if help is needed.

If most of the council is no longer helping I am all for a change in members or adding new ones that are able to help you.

Is this something people are intrested in??

Localan, I understand where he is comming from...
I just feel since he IS doing so much work, and none
of us really understand it. He should keep us in the loop
so we know what is going on and can help out.. I just
want a strong team effort here!

Edit: Thanks for stopping in Kyle :)

nailed it on the head TwiztedFait.. at least my thoughts

i have been lurking for awhile and i have been folding on/off for a year and what king does for hardfolding is by far more than anyone else and i think it is high time some of us help him out

BUT BACK ON TOPIC!!!!

we just want to help king... tell me how i can help... if it is to shut up and let u do ur thing then so b it

edit: btw way i love this tag that tells if u have gone up or down way cool!!

Sorry, really shouldn't be posting before my morning coffee.

Anyway I've been through the wringer so many times that it just tends to become a big blur(here we go again type thing), right now I've been working on getting everything fixed and adding all the new items that I can.

Once that was completed and the site was running completely smooth I was going to ask for members interested in a couple of the specific areas.

Mainly;

1] Team news (both F@H and UD)
2] Project guides both (F@H and UD)

Other then that there really isn't much else that can be done from outside, everything else is internal coding and I handle that part.

Many of us want to help out any way we can... I'm sure no one here wishes to insult/criticize other teammates… But we would like to help out where we can… Sometimes, I just want to know where I can help the most...

Keep on Folding!!

No hard feelings King. You are a [H]ardcore part of our team.

And since Kyle has a good delete button... My question still stands for him:

How do you see the Council, and what are your wishes for the team?

Your posts were not on topic and deleted. If you have a problem with that, feel free to start a new thread that is topical to your suggestions. If you have a problem with my actions feel free to take it up with me via email at kyle@hardocp.com. Your little whining and eye rolling will only get you an ass kick in here...

yep...

i think a new theard needs to be started by king to the likes of what help is needed and to email him if we want to help out in a certain area

I think this is something that YOU GUYS need to figure out for yourselves. I can say this though, I have seen a lot of folks come and go, and there are only a few active guys that put truly tow the line and walk the walk, and King_N is one of them.

I see a lot of good intentions, but many times the people that have them dissappear after they find out it is a lot of work to keep the ball rolling around here.

Well the Hardfolding Council is about more then just the website.

So. Back on track guys.

For the news, is there someone who can help gather information and post?
Or at least have a certain format to put it into and email it to you and be
ready to post online?

What about the Idea of a new mini-page for galleries of boxen? I see there is
one page with two pictures... Is this viable?

Edit:

///
as for the Council..
it is sounding like we are ready to vote in some new blood... (and old)
so how do WE as a TEAM feel we should do this?

Text format for news.

Also the picture section can hold 10 pic links for each member.

I will make a gmail account now for the new picture section for the site..
what format size do you feel is best for site usage?

Jpg? 640x480?

People can just send me images with their folding name/forum name
and I can chop stuff down to size

edit: hordeboxen@gmail.com

if there was an email to send to and a format i would do so...

as far as council... i have no right to vote for that sort of thing as i have not been around long enough... maybe king could bring more light on this...

No need, the pics are links, if the members can post them in the forums they can post them on the site as well, I just have to update the record to avoid the section from being abused.

I think I have it set to display the pics at 800 X 600 at present.

I missed the part where we need to vote new people in. As far as I'm concerned, I do what I do for my own benefit, and don't need recognition for it. Other people may find my work useful, though, so it's in everyone's best interest to hear about it. As far as news, send King_N news whenever you notice something important. The last news bit is from 2001. We can do better than that.

For project guides, I feel that I'm not qualified to do those. I don't use Windows on a regular basis, so I can't test any possible solutions. For Linux, there's the excellent finstall, or my fold-server which has already got a lot of documentation and more coming.

I appreciate the input of everyone on this matter, and King_N for his hard work on the website. However, I think that there's no real reason to "add people to the council" based on a vote rather than amount of work. The members of the council still around can discuss it among themselves, but I don't think that the team should honor people who haven't necessarily been involved. If you want to be on the council, do some hard work for a month and then PM king_n.

I don't mean to sound all pissy, but perhaps I do. Forgive me and look at what I'm trying to say.

Well i was thinking along the lines of having people nominated..
and then council could meet in mirc or something to that effect..
and get things set up so everything runs smoother.. Like Viper
for contests.. you for Fold Server (mage) etc etc

not just any new people.. but active people who have made a
difference for the team. thank you for clearing it up some :)
kinda hazy when i first wrote it

Jesus, I leave for one day and this happens.

UD/ FAH / its all for the good of man.

You guys need to stop fighting and start B0rging more computers.

Thanks for keeping an eye on things Klye.

you would thing these guys would grow up/

I will close this thread if you guys keep it up

DR_K... since you are the mod of the Group... would you like to be the one to
take all the nominations for people to be on the Council?

Or King_N? Since you are pretty much the only active member?

What do you two think.

Edit: I suppose we need to think of the areas that we want to focus on too ie when we
take nominations be like Viper and OSU for Contests...

The original council was formed to organize and keep track of the original team. Yes things have changed a bit since then.

A few members left because of problems with Stanford (I can’t see that ever changing but they are trying). Others left because at least once a year, sometimes more often, a group of our newer members who through no fault of their own have no idea what has transpired in the past think they can do it better.

New ideas are always welcome. There is even a proper way to go about presenting them while at the same time not causing total discord within the team. This thread is a very good example of the “how not to “ method.

King needs data and news info to post. The email links exist and have existed from day one. That task seems to interest just about no one. Everyone wants to be the Chief; no one wants to do the simple stuff.

The Hard folding site is located on Kyle’s servers and as such limited access is a must for security reasons. That should be obvious to everyone.

We don’t need a bunch of people taking off on their own adjenda with different and separate projects. We as a whole need to support the team, the whole team not just our little corner of it.

One goal guys and gals, let’s all leave our egos at the door, please.

I can help with general stuff. My university labs here has access to Mac G5 and I will put up install guides for FAH and UD for those guys who wanna contribute with their Mac power. For those interested in the other guide, our own mod Dr. K has em up here. I dont wanna add any extra work for you King so all that needs to be done is some linking or cut+paste,

I started the fun folding fact of the week thread primarily because I went from a total n00b to folding to not so total noob at folding (Still dont know any Linux). We can still put in stuff but more of a team 33 fun folding fact because I doubt I can come up with more than 6-8 tips.

I would also like to add that King has done the best job with Hardfolding considering he volunteered for the job. I love the fact you can add your stats to the posts and have a cool thumbnail. I did SETI@Home for 6-8 months for a team that will remain unnamed and they did not have anything close to what you have done. Hats off to you, your majesty. ;)

If you had read the posts.. we are trying to do this as a team.
This is the prime way everyone talks to each other.. this is not something that is changing
right now. It is just something I see that we can work on.

I am not trying to be a chief.. in fact.. all I want to do is work on smaller projects
but we need someone... somewhere.. to keep the smaller projects comming..
to keep interest in the team, to get new memebers... to flog the aussies :)

This thread is about taking something that exists (The Council) and bringing it up
to date with people who (while they may be new) are willing to put in the time and
energy to keep things going.

This is not a private conquest of any of us... we are here to find the cure.. as a team.

So. This is one way to do it, through talking to one another.
If you think there is a better way (since this is not the way) please let us know so
we can be more productive.

EDIT:

And such there seems to be such a big "grudge" between "older" folders and
the "younger" ones.. Don't you feel that as someone who has been there and
got the tshirt.. you could help us AND the team.. by sharing what has happened
and what works and does not work? instead of just slaming everything?

I did read the posts. The framework already exists. All that remains is for people to fill in the blanks. Surely you don’t need additional leadership to add to the news, or post pictures of farms and gardens or write and contribute new guides and info do you?

Well if that is all you think our team should do. Then that is fine.

But I think there are far more things we are capable of then just
putting out news articles and pretty pictures...

And I hope that others on the team feel the same way...

Like the interest in the badges.. and the contests..

I am not looking at what we have just right now and call it good enough.
I want to make things better for everyone to keep the team motivated.

The website is but a small step for the team!

EDIT:

I have absolutely no argument with what you are saying, none at all. Also, I hold no “grudges” as an older member of the team, not even sure where that idea came from.

What I’m saying is we need, as a team, to fill in the small blanks as we go along as well as grow into new ideas. One of the small blanks is to support the web site so it too can grow and become “the” place where everyone goes to find out the stats, news and information.

These threads are just as important, make no mistake, but let’s not forget what we have already built and let us not forget to continue to support It all.

Yea. No more flamewars or off-topic posts on this one guys.

Lets be serious.

So. back to the Council.

What do you guys think this team needs to focus on.. we have
a couple great guys doing contests, and one doing badges...

What can we do about recruitment? I think this would be a good
"position" for the council.. someone to work with Steve and Kyle
Maybe make "banners" for the web page now and then, or finding
other ways to increase our [H]orde..
