gtx990 in early 2015

You should really check the dates before posting. This was nothing but guessing back then and we already now have the GM204 in the 980/970 cards.

GM200 showed up on Zauba manifests 2 months after GM204 so in theory if yields are mature Nvidia could have released GTX Titan II this November. However most rumors are Nvidia is going to sit tight until AMD releases Pirate Islands and see how much faster it is than the GTX 980 and tweak GM200s performance.

So it could be a long wait and GTX970/980s are flying off the shelves--in theory if AMD was ready with a response to Nvidia's GTX 970/980 launch we would have a new "true" flagship Nvidia series ready by now--nvidia just has no incentive to release it now since it would cannibalize their current sales lineup.

It might depend on if 980Ti AND Titan 2 are both in the works.

What I am saying here is purely my own (possibly very misguided) speculation, so take it with LOTS of salt.

If 980Ti is planned to be followed by Titan 2, I think what nVidia might do is release 980Ti & 960 at the same time, but before AMD has released their 3xx series. The way I see it is that the high end enthusiasts, if 980Ti prove to be more potent than 980 (for example, 8GB VRAM with 20% perf of a 980), some will bite it, and unless AMD's flagship 390X is anywhere near comparable, AMD may delay 390x to see if they can optimise it better to be competitive against 980Ti. Basically stall AMD to give them more time to work on Titan 2 as a response to their eventual 390x.

As long as nvidias sales remain strong, I don't think we are going to see them make a move intruding on them. If AMD releases something semi competitive, we may see a bump in the release date of the new cards.

There is currently a hole in the ultra-high-end market and I is likely that the Titan 2, given that the features and performance is there, would sell well without much impacting the sales of 980.
I would tend to believe that must current Titan owners have generally not replaced their card by the GTX 980. These peoples are hungry for blood.

The high end market is very empty right now. I'd jump on a Ti or Titan were they to be released. UHD resolution is screaming for more VRAM and pixel-pushing power. 980 didn't excite enough to upgrade and SLI-anything excites even less. Once those cards arrive, maybe the rest of the system will need an upgrade and am keen to do it; hoping Windows 10 will handle UHD resolutions better, too.

Regardless of the GTX 980 having a respectable performance jump over my current 680, it still isn't anything earth shatteringly ground breaking. I'll admit I've been tempted to pull the upgrade trigger on a few occasions, but at this stage of the game I think I'm better off just holding out to see what's on offer early next year. I'd probably be sold on the GTX 980Ti or an 8gb variant of the standard 980.

Well the 980 is about 65-70% faster than the 680 overall. In most of the newer games that have come out since the 980 was released, its almost twice as fast as the 680. All that while using basically the same power is pretty impressive. The 980 is way overpriced though so if bang for buck matters then the 970 would still be a massive improvement from the 680 especially in the very latest games.

How is the 980 overpriced? It's the fastest single card on the market (not including dual cards).

Is that really all you took away? This has all been discussed before and I just made it clear be comparing it to the 970 which is only 15% slower. So AGAIN if bang for buck matters then the 970 is the more logical choice.

That's how it's always going to be though. The best card, even if it's only by 5-15%, will always carry a much larger premium. Second best cards have always been close in performance with the best (7950 with 7970, 290 with 290x, 770 was semi-close to 780, 670 and 680 etc.)

Also, why was this thread bumped, the article is old.

Yes I know that as I have been a pc gamer for 12 years and owned dozens of video cards. With the 680 it was only a $100 difference though above the 670. With the 580 it was a $150 more than the 570. With the 980 its a whopping $220 difference. The gap is just really huge this time making the x80 card extremely disproportional to the x70 card. So yet again the point was that if bang for buck matters then 970 is way more logical. Someone buying the 980 probably does not care. All of this is nothing more than common sense and people will buy whatever they want or need.

This. Top rung products are meant to act as premium and be anchors in the lineup, it is a basic marketing strategy every company uses. When oc'd to equal clock speeds in MHz, a gtx 970 and 980 are only about 10 percent apart in performance. As a 780 owner who went 4k back in May, I hopped right onto Gtx 970 sli once it was available, which has been great since it runs quiet and cool, OC'ing monstrously on its default air cooling (msi gaming cards). I am planning on holding out until 16nm cards like nvidia pascal or if amd gets its ship in shape whatever they have to offer at that time in early to mid 2016. For now the gtx 970 sli handles everything I want for 4k gaming, and I don't forsee a jump big enough to warrant an upgrade until that point, or any real need, honestly either. Changed my older 60hz 4k mst panel to an ips Acer b326hk 32" IPS sst 4k 60hz monitor and loving it :D.

So Uh, your complaint is that they gave us a price break on the x70 card this time around and that's a bad thing ?

You compared the price gap between the x70 and x80 cards being smaller than prior generations, then referred to it negatively. So, yes. Yes you did.
Do you really have trouble following the context here? I was saying that with the bigger price gap this gen its even harder to recommend the 980 over the 970.

This thread went to two pages.

When it comes to 4k Resolution, the 980 is = to a 290x.

If 1080/1440p the 980 GTX is the fastest single card.

So if you aren't worried about 4k, then get a 980 GTX. Otherwise if you do 4k then the best price/performance is the 290x.
