Gtx680 or wait?

Reading how this gpu isn't quite their big boy chip, even though it's a bit faster than the 7970.
I'm in the market and cannot afford the 690, so my options are the 680 or the 7970.

Is there something around the corner i don't know about?
 
If all you are using is that 1080p television, just stick with the GTX 580 until the next generation.

Tommy want a new video card! I long for more frames in some of the crap games i've been playing for 1 1/2 yrs now, such as Swtor, which is a pig and even stresses the 580 a bit, i want those pretty physx to be smooth http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EWFkDrKvBRU come Borderlands 2 very soon.
I'd also hope for GW2 to be as silky as possible come the 25th w/eye candy turned up.

But, i realize you're probably right, although i do have the cash to grab something a bit better right now.

Usually going up a single generation isn't a huge jump in performance. Wait for the 700 whatevers.
 
If you really feel like you need an upgrade, than the only thing that makes sense is the GTX 680. I don't think the 670 or 7970 (unless it is the GHz edition) are enough of an upgrade to make it worthwhile.
 
Put that money in your safe and wait for the next gen, it's not that far off. You're on a single monitor/tv, your current card will easily tie you over til then.
 
Just go with the 680 if you have the itch. So far there has been zero news about next gen cards and nvidia just rolled out their mid range two days ago. They're smart enough not to cannibalize their own market.


If you don't see 20 go for 6xx or wait for 8xxx/7xx threads it usually means a go on upgrading.
 
I came from a gtx580 to a gtx670 and I noticed a nice improvement in bf3.
But my main reason for the upgrade wasn't for more frames, it was because I have 3 monitors and the gtx580 can't output to 3 monitors by itself.
If it wasn't for the monitor support, I would have waited
 
I'm waiting. But the upgraditis is killing me.

I just think we are too close to the next card. I think they will refresh the 680GTX in the Fall. Then release the next-gen in March 2013.

I'm just guessing though.
 
Sell the 580 and get yourself a 680, enjoy it till next gen is out then sell it for a 780 or whatever.

I would have told you to wait if there was a firm release date for the next gen of cards, but who knows when those will come out considering Nvidia Just released their mid range 660ti, enjoy what's out now or you'll wait forever for the next best thing.
 
I went from a EVGA 580 1.5gb to a gigabyte OC 670.I love the extra bump in performance, but more importantly i like how quiet it is during gaming.

I did upgrade to a 120hz monitor at the same time as the gpu... That might also skew my thoughts, but overall its my favorite card i've owned.
 
I suppose you could assume a GTX 685 or 780 could happen in November:
The GTX 680 was launched in March 2012.
The GTX 480 was launched in March 2010, and the GTX 580 was launched in November 2010.
The GTX 280 was launched in June 2008, and the GTX 285 was launched in January 2009.

But I'm skeptical that there will be a refresh this year at all; the GTX 280 and GTX 480 cards ran really hot and needed the refreshes they got; the 680 doesn't have that issue at all.

Those who were expecting a "real high-end Kepler gaming card" based on the GK110 chip this year will be disappointed; all of the GK110 chips that will be made this year have already been sold and won't even be used in workstation video cards, much less a gaming card - they're going into supercomputer clusters.

Agreed. I don't think the next gen cards are all that close either.
 
Well, if we go by history, you're probably looking at around March 2013. 7 months, and in the meantime you can add another $50 a month to whatever you were planning on spending now. That'd probably give you enough to get the GTX 790.

I probably don't have the wealth of experience of most of the guys around here, but for me, everytime I've upgraded in consecutive generations I've been disappointed. A performance boost of 15 to 20% isn't bad but it ain't worth the $350 - $400 I usually spend. I wanna be able to install the card and go "holy shit, now we're talking!" and I only seem to have that reaction when I skip a generation.
 
these people dont understand impulse upgrading.

buy the 680!!! MAX OUT EVERYTHING
