its really pointless to get a GTX 470 TBH, the performance is same as 5850 but cost a lot more, and temp/power is outrages...

its a better buy to pay more for a GTX 480 or go for 5850/5870 if you don't mind using ATI..

its a horrible choice to go with GTX 470 right now...

Not sure you could be much more incorrect... OC'd 470 vs. OC'd 5870 is a very tight race, per user reviews and updated articles with overclocking results, while the 470 is $350-360 vs. 5870 @ $400-410. (including shipping). A 480 oc'd just tramples a 5870: http://www.guru3d.com/article/overclocking-geforce-gtx-480-with-extra-gpu-voltage/

and require waterblock or fan spin up for some annoying noise?

OC 470 vs OC 5870 is tight race? not quite sure what you smoking here"again" since the last magic result from in nVidia section that have some insanely high benchmark over a GTX 480 ...

PS: lots of 5850 also running on 950 and 1000 core, which is going to trump 470?

With a little added voltage the card becomes very tweakable. Keep an eye on your GPU temperature as it is now reaching 90 C with 100% fan RPM. Bare in mind that we breached the 250W TDP now and we are hovering at roughly 300 Watt power consumption on the GTX 480.

so you want to play games at dust buster level, go ahead.....

and yes, OC GTX 480 will trump 5870, I totally agree, but bear in mind, I have seen lot of 5870 that runs above 1040/1350, some others even goes above 1100 in Core under 70%+ fan speed which is pretty insane as the thing you just posted

I am really tired of you trolls, someone need to take some action on this...

Sorry, I am getting Nvidia and that is the only option I have: Nvidia 3D vision kit is why....

So having said that... a GTX 470 super clocked is $400, a regular 470 is about $350-360.

I'm assuming the gtx 470 sc is just a stable version of the 470? So maybe I should wait for the regular to go in stock..

you should get a GTX 480 instead really...

if you still insist want a 470, just grab the regular one, Super clocked one is just few Mhz above it which does nothing, and the chip is no better than regular...

The GTX 470 cooler runs much quieter than the 480 one, mine's @ 73% fan and running my 800c/3650mem oc at 86c max. It's roughly equal in noise to what my 5870 was @ 40% fan. Visit the nVidia section on these very forums...

A highly-OC'd 5870 is competitive with a highly-OC'd GTX 470 while costing a good chunk more, is what people are finding out now that the 470's are in their hands ;)... go read around forums here and elsewhere, instead of flaming/lashing out because you are being shown to be wrong. Just because someone shows something that is contrary to what you believe does not make them a troll... inflammatory remarks like "what are you smoking" on the other hand, well, that speaks for itself as to your personality.

Here's some proof:

The only problem with the 480 gtx is . hmm it is over $150 more.... than the 470.

Yep... I didn't think it was worth the noise/cost tradeoff in the end once I actually got and used my GTX 470... I was pleasantly surprised with how quick it is.

I agree with you man, 470 is a waste of money, I honestly don't know why it underperforms as specs wise it should be pretty comparable, may be its the drivers. But if you want the best, it is better to spend the money and get gtx 480. I just sold my hd 5870's, hehe. I got a gtx 480 actually I got a good deal on it. My local microcenter had one in stock and I got a 5% discount on top of the retail price, and now I have it running at 800 core with default voltage. The damn thing is a monster in performance at those clocks.

and I do agree GoldenTiger is little over the edge with Nvidia passion. I enjoyed my 5870's and now I am enjoying this.

GTX 480 is 150 more but it is also the fastest single gpu card. My point is why would you consider the gtx 470 over hd 5850, get the hd 5850 or get the gtx 480, gtx 470 is not the best buy.

Like I said before, ATI is not an option. Gaming with 3d vision is really something and Nvidia wins that point....

Even if the 480 is the best video card out today... I'm not sure it is more cost effective than the gtx 470.

If the performance difference between the 480 and 470 is really 20%... .and the price difference is about 25%-30%.... hmm does not seem so bad now.

If you have a 3d vision kit, I strongly suggest getting the 480. Rendering 3d really taxes cards, somewhere between 60-100% more than regular load or even higher, it's like doing AA because the card has to output more stuff than normal.

I don't know what Goldentiger is smoking. His 470 is coming dangerously close to raping my 480.

its more like 25% performance difference while GTX 470 is 20% off from 5870 and GTX 480 is 5% ... which add up to 25%...

I would only get the 470 if you plan to resell it on ebay and make a profit :).

Otherwise the 5850 is as good as the 470, and the 5870 is faster then it hands down.

Also dont look at Metro 2033 benchmarks, they are borked because of the bug in the game (which affect Nvidia scores , but it affect both ati and nvidia).

Also goldentiger is a huge Nvidia guy, He was the one saying that Charlie was wrong, when he was 90% right.

Either way, dont get a 470, it is just not worth the price compared to other video cards.

PSU for the 480.... Currently I run 2x8800GTs, plus 4 7200rpm HDs... core-i7 and a dvd drive i never use....

I'm running all this on a 500W Xclio... I'm not sure if I HAVE to upgrade...

when 2 5870's in xfire push less watts then 1 480 GTX, you will want more then a 500w psu

"
For a person wanting to run a single GTX 480, we would suggest no less than a 600 watt power supply but we would be more comfortable with a 700 watt power supply; again if you are overclocking anything in your system. That should give you a safe bit of headroom and keep your PSU from running "in the red" continuously. It is hard to suggest any less for the GTX 470 either. NVIDIA's official stance is a 600w PSU for GTX 480 and 550w PSU for GTX 470.
"

I would say that if you aren't gonna get the 480 then get the 5870. Its faster than the 470 and very close to the performance of the 480. Less heat , less noise and about the same in cost.

Unless you must have the few extra things Nvidia can do (Cuda , PhysX)

^
Yeah, the specific thing for Nvidia is 3d Vision
=============================

I realize they recommend that wattage but from reading this forum if I have learned one thing is that higher wattage is not always better.... so I'm wondering if the Xclio 500w will still hold up.

no, I honestly don't think it will. I have a tx750 corsair, and I think I am maxing it out with overclocking the gtx 480 and with my i7 920 running at 4ghz, and 6 fans in my system, they are all connected to the board. Three hard drives. I actually ordered a 1000w from tigerdirect, after bing cash back and rebate it would end up being 100 bucks, and it is the bfg ex-1000, quad rail modular and 36amps on each rail.

No I do not think it will hold up.

Also ATI has 3d gaming as well coming out.

The only thing Nvidia has that ATI does not is Physx.

3d glasses/Multi-monitor gaming/DX11 is all supported by ATI as well as Nvidia.

I still would recommend a 5870 over a 470

So this is what I should get:
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicat...&csid=ITD&recordsPerPage=10&body=REVIEWS#tabs

? I will have a very similar setup to yours..

PS: Does anybody know if the 480/470 can handle 3 monitors at once? (and this is a long shot.. but does the mini hdmi work with 3d vision / my 120hz monitor supports HDMI)

No, you will need 2 cards in SLI for Multi-monitor support. It will also raise your temps of your cards, and you also need an SLI motherboard, and an SLI certified PSU.

It will also be done Software side, When ATI runs is Hardware wise.

And no it is not out yet, it was suppose to be released this week or next week,.

Either way you need 2 video cards, SLI mobo, and SLI cert. PSU for Multi-monitor gaming.

again go with the 5850 or 5870....

I dont mean i want to game on all 3 monitors... .this is for non gaming..I have 3 monitors for desktop use. .. .. i only game on the 120hz monitor...

I see.. it seems you are right...

My motherboard supports 2 regular cards + 1 x4 ... so I'll have to look for something cheap for now...

At one point I might want to do real SLI, I hope the power supply supports it.

yea thats why people buy the 5850 or 5870 cause it supports 3 screens per 1 card.

No need to upgrade your motherboard or PSU if you got a 5870.

Just think about it man....instead of buying a new PSU for your 470 or 480....you dont need to if you purchase a 5850 or 5870.

Saves you money, and gets you equal to better performance.

Sorry but I already invested too much money on my 3D vision setup and it works great, and it works now.... I understand ATI is coming up with something sometime soon... and I'm glad, competition is only good for the consumer.

It seems ATI would be the right choice except I'm locked down to nvidia for the moment.....

You are only locked down by your choice :)

Either way good luck with your future products.

P.S. It is somewhat supported now.

AWESOME thank you
i want that card :D

Get a $20 card to drive the extra monitors then, and run your gaming one off of your gtx 470.

LOL @ the huge ati guys calling me a nut for showing facts that prove them wrong, and pulling the silly "goldentiger is a fanboy/troll/lunatic" stupidity. I guess some people are WAY too embedded with their favorite company (ati). I don't care between em other than my 5870 sucking this gen. on drivers. I have shown proof while you have just shown petulant insults. Put up or shut up, as they say ;).

GTX 480 needs a 800W PSU to be 100% sure that every thing is working fine even at full load, with an OC.

You realy need a new PSU, Check the FS section, somevody is selling a 1050W and 1200W Silverstone and Enermax modular PSUs for 160$ea,

Another bench, with various oc's and my 5870 for comparison. As I said, GTX 470 oc'd is a great value... I'd just get the vanilla and OC it like I did :).
