Of course CPU bottlenecks exist. Pairing a 3 year old CPU with a brand new GPU will almost always create a bottleneck.

it is not doing its job right. that is why I want to know and learn. this is part of the fun, not just game.

Yeah it is, your CPU is 3 to 4 years old, it is old!

If you want more CPU power, get a Core i5 or i7 and then you will see your GPU work properly.


Gee, my Pentium 4 @ 1.6GHz won't play Starcraft 2 with a GTX480, so it must be the GTX480's fault! :D

Fox, what kind of mobo, cooler, and stepping on that Q66.

I'm curious since I'm running an evga 680i SLi LT, B3, stock cooler. I tried overclocking to 2.7ghz, and it worked fine, but I got scared and put it back down. I manage only 55c load(After about 6 hours of encoding x264 video). I've been considering trying to overclock recently.

From what I've read, the 680i does not do well with overclocking quads.

The 680i does fine for overclocking quads. I had a Q6600 in mine and ran in 24/7 at 3.4 ghz at 1.325 volts. I occasionally ran it at 3.6ghz for apps that needed it. The failure of that board is that the memory controller (C1 Error) fails all to easy when all ram slots are populated. I went through 4 boards through EVGA until finally they screwed up and shipped me a 790i ultra by mistake that was mislabeled as a 780i. They ended up shipping me a new model number sticker with serial number and they allowed me to keep the board with the lifetime warranty. Only thing I was out was now I had to purchase DDR3 ram.
 
The Q6600 doesn't have to be the limiting part. Overclock it like I have mine, and crank up the visual to ultra etc and you'll have some fun without it going into the 30fps range.
