Fellow HardOCPers,

So the last couple weeks have been crappy for me. I'm already on my 2nd GTX 285 video card and am having a little difficulty deciding on what to do.

A little background I recently purchased a BFGTech OFCU GTX 285 Video card and was very pleased with its performance but shortly found out that it suffers from an excessive amount of overheating and would cause instability problems in any games I threw at it. I quickly RMA'd the card and instead of waiting decided to get the XFX Black Edition GTX 285 which I believe is clocked at 690MHz.

:( - It seems to suffer from the same problems as the BFGTech and others like it. If I jack up the fan speed using RivaTurner it seems to run better, but I'm just not happy that I have to use a program to jack up the fan speed to make it stable.

Are all GTX 285 cards suffering from this problem? What are you guys doing? I thought about getting an aftermarket HSF. Anyone doing this? What are you using?

I thought about RMAing this one as well, but I feel like I'm just going to have the same problems unless I do something else to the video card. (Put a BOXFAN next to my open case, aftermarket HSF, different card, etc)

Is anyone else suffering like I am? What have you done?

Thanks for all your input.

2 different cards overheating in your case suggests a lack of airflow.

I forgot to mention I had an XFX GTX 260 prior to this card. I didn't have any problems. I realize it's a lower clock speed card but still...

Maybe you just have REALLY bad luck? I've got a an XFX GTX 285 XXX Edition OC'd a little beyond the Black Edition Specs (700/1350/1600), and I've never had issues with overheating while keeping the fan on 'auto' settings (i.e. I don't have to jack it up to 100% in Riva Tuner), and this is in a mid tower Cooler Master case that has nowhere near the airflow of the case you've got

Well, got an update for you helpful folks.

I took the side of the case off to see if that helps. It didn't. I loaded up RivaTurner monitor to check temperatures while doing some gaming / benchmarking.

Playing TF2 with the side off with the fan running stock would still cause crashes. If I jack up the fan speed to 80%+ I could play an extensive time without any problems. I downloaded Furmark and decided to kick the shit out of my video card to see what it could do. With the fan running 80%+ I could run the Stability Test with the Xtreme Burning Mode turned on. 1920x1200 and 16x MSAA turned on. (The side of the case is still off at this point)

Now if I go back to the stock fan speed (40%) and run the same settings on Furmark my video card reached 100 degrees Celsius and then Blue Screened/Crashed/Rebooted.

I'm pretty sure it's not suppose to do this, so tomorrow I'm going to either RMA it back to NewEgg or XFX. I haven't decided yet.

I'm still looking to collect some information from people who are suffering from this problem as well with similar video cards. Thanks in advance.

stock isn't 40%, thats where it idles. Stock is auto and usually spins up to about 60-70%
